"That the God of Israel makes doers of us through the Torah is, in my view, the most beautiful thing we can thank him for: Every lethargy, every melancholy, indifference and moroseness is ended . . . Wherever the Torah claims us as doers, it confronts the nihilism that exclaims: There's nothing I can do. The Torah opposes anti-revolutionary laziness" (F.-W. Marquardt). This anthology contains a selection of essays by Friedrich-Wilhelm Marquardt (1928-2002), former professor of systematic theology at the Free University of Berlin, Germany. As a student of Karl Barth in the fifties, Marquardt became one of the most influential pioneers in renewing the relationship between Christians and Jews in Germany after the Shoah, as well as a Barth scholar proposing a new perspective on Barth's theology and political radicalism. Accordingly the essays contained in this volume deal with the two main areas of interest in Marquardt's theological journey: Part 1 presents essays dealing with new perspectives in the relationship between Christians and Jews after the Shoah, promoting for example the significance of "the Jewish No" to the Messiahship of Jesus for Christian theology, and the relevance of Talmudic studies for Christians. Part 2 presents examples of Marquardt's approach to Barth's theology, emphasizing the relevance of connecting the theological and the political spheres in general, and the socialist horizon in particular in Barth's theological framework. This perspective is supported by an abundance of historical evidence and by deciphering Barth's unpublished "Socialist Speeches" from the Safenwil period.

The Audacity Of Peace written by Scot McKnight and has been published by Fortress Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-06-07 with Religion categories.

In The Audacity of Peace, Scot McKnight sketches a peace ethic, or a peace witness, that embraces the embodied self-denial of Jesus to the point of the cross, which through the resurrection is vindicated by God. As such, a peace ethic volitionally and communally participates in the cruciform pattern of the life of Jesus. Through the power of God's grace and the indwelling Spirit of God, the participant in the way of Jesus is transformed into a Christoform life. A peace ethic is a lived theology whose discerning witness transcends the specific principles and ideas of that theology. In the My Theology series, the world's leading Christian thinkers explain some of the principal tenets of their theological beliefs in concise, pocket-sized books.

Divine Audacity written by Peter S. Dillard and has been published by BoD – Books on Demand this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-01-01 with Religion categories.

In Divine Audacity, Peter Dillard presents a historically informed and rigorous analysis of the themes of mystical union, volition and virtue that occupied several of the foremost theological minds in the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries. In particular, the work of Marguerite Porete raises complex questions in these areas, which are further explored by a trio of her near contemporaries. Their respective meditations are thoroughly analysed and then skilfully brought into dialogue. What emerges from Dillard’s synthesis of these voices is a contemporary mystical theology that is rooted in Hugh of Balma’s affective approach, sharpened through critical engagement with Meister Eckhart’s intellectualism, and strengthened by crucial insights gleaned from the writings of John Ruusbroec. The fresh examination of these thinkers - one of whom paid with her life for her radicalism - will appeal to philosophers and theologians alike, while Dillard’s own propositions demand attention from all who concern themselves with the nature of the union between the soul and God.

My TheologyThe world's leading Christian thinkers explain some of the principal tenets of their theological beliefs.'Peace is worth fighting for,' writes Scot McKnight. 'I don't witness to peace to win the world but to offer a Christian alternative to the 155 million deaths in twentieth-century wars. This small book records some of my journey.'Growing up in the Viet Nam era, living through periods of American conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan, and engaging with the ethics of war, gun control, the death penalty, abortion, and the inhumane treatment of prisoners, McKnight has developed a peace ethic that embodies the self-denial ethic of Jesus and demonstrates that warring and the Christian faith are incompatible. The Audacity of Peace describes his journey, with reference to key thinkers who have influenced him along the way.

Christ Power And Mammon written by Scott Thomas Prather and has been published by A&C Black this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-08-15 with Religion categories.

This book examines the role of the New Testament concept of the 'principalities and powers' in the thought of Karl Barth and John Howard Yoder, showing how this biblical concept of power is central to the fundamental theological convictions of each thinker. Prather offers a scholarly account of the underexplored theological and ethical import of a major biblical theme and the book addresses questions and concerns from a wide range of academic and lay theological interest. He brings Barth and Yoder into dialogue here and examines the three crucial areas: the 'confessional' distinction of church and world; the demonization of political power; and the intrinsic relation between the political and economic powers. While other theologians have rightly identified a 'christocentric' connection between the thought of Barth and Yoder, no attempt has been made to bring them together through the sustained analysis of a single doctrinal or ethical issue - this book does just that.

Reclaiming Mission as Constructive Theology offers a compelling case for the need to integrate God's mission and missional church conversation with a public and post-colonial study of World Christianity. Driven by a commitment to publicly engaged theology that takes seriously the reality of Global Christianity, Paul Chung presents a vital new model for understanding the mission of God as a dynamic word-event. This is argued in conversation with contemporary missional theology and analysis of the development of Global Christianity, and as such brings important transcultural issues to bear on contemporary American conversations about the missional church. All of this serves to innovatively stimulate this missional church conversation and more directly address the various questions that arise in pursuing mission in a multiculuralized American society.

In contemporary Western society the church has been pushed to the margins, leading experts to describe the current era as a time ‘after Christendom’. Many traditional churches and congregations are struggling, a condition worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic regulations. As the practice of churchgoing wanes, the performance of the sacrament is called into question. How can we bring the traditional, communal experience of sacrament into the modern world?

Adventures In Orthodoxy written by Dwight Longenecker and has been published by Gracewing Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Theology, Doctrinal categories.

Watch out, Chesterton and C.S. Lewis Here's a writer as clear . . . and as exciting Christians often find the Creed as tedious as a contract, and orthodoxy dull as dirt. In these lively pages - written for Christians and non-Christians alike - Dwight Longenecker shows that, on the contrary, orthodoxy is exciting and the Creed the beginning of a grand, mysterious adventure Longenecker demonstrates that, like an omate cath-edral rich with endless nuances of light and shade, the Creed teases with paradoxical possibilities; it bursts with magnificent meaning and unexpected, eternal insights. It sweeps away nihilism, challenges indifference, and uproots religion grown stale and pedestrian. In a word, says Longenecker, the Creed catapults believers to the brink of mystery and invites them to dwell there, in silent wonder and contemplation. Here you'll finally encounter the Creed as it really is a striking affirmation that bears us not into theological dead ends, but unto a world that never ends; not into an obsolete medieval universe - closed, dark, and dying - but unto a bright and exciting world that moves in ever increasing spirals of glory, a world to which the only natural response is a grateful and hearty Amenl Here is Catholic orthodoxy, as heavy as the universe, made to dance like the universe. Reading this is like coming upon old Augustine dressed up like St. Francis We may have another Chesterton coming along here Thomas Howard, author, Splendor in the Ordinary

This volume puts Barth and liberation theologies in critical and constructive conversation. With incisive essays from a range of noted scholars, it forges new connections between Barth's expansive corpus and the multifaceted world of Christian liberation theology. It shows how Barth and liberation theologians can help us to make sense of – and perhaps even to respond to – some of the most pressing issues of our day: race and racism in the United States; changing understandings of sex, gender, and sexuality; the ongoing degradation of the ecosphere; the relationship between faith, theological reflection, and the arts; the challenge of decolonizing Christian thought; and ecclesial and political life in the Global South.
