The application ofcomputational methods to solve scientific and practical problems in genome research created a new interdisciplinary area that transcends boundaries tradi tionally separating genetics, biology, mathematics, physics, and computer science. Com puters have, of course, been intensively used in the field of life sciences for many years, even before genome research started, to store and analyze DNA or protein sequences; to explore and model the three-dimensional structure, the dynamics, and the function of biopolymers; to compute genetic linkage or evolutionary processes; and more. The rapid development of new molecular and genetic technologies, combined with ambitious goals to explore the structure and function ofgenomes ofhigher organisms, has generated, how ever, not only a huge and exponentially increasing body of data but also a new class of scientific questions. The nature and complexity of these questions will also require, be yond establishing a new kind ofalliance between experimental and theoretical disciplines, the development of new generations both in computer software and hardware technolo gies. New theoretical procedures, combined with powerful computational facilities, will substantially extend the horizon of problems that genome research can attack with suc cess. Many of us still feel that computational models rationalizing experimental findings in genome research fulfill their promises more slowly than desired. There is also an uncer tainty concerning the real position of a "theoretical genome research" in the network of established disciplines integrating their efforts in this field.

High Performance Computational Methods for Biological Sequence Analysis presents biological sequence analysis using an interdisciplinary approach that integrates biological, mathematical and computational concepts. These concepts are presented so that computer scientists and biomedical scientists can obtain the necessary background for developing better algorithms and applying parallel computational methods. This book will enable both groups to develop the depth of knowledge needed to work in this interdisciplinary field. This work focuses on high performance computational approaches that are used to perform computationally intensive biological sequence analysis tasks: pairwise sequence comparison, multiple sequence alignment, and sequence similarity searching in large databases. These computational methods are becoming increasingly important to the molecular biology community allowing researchers to explore the increasingly large amounts of sequence data generated by the Human Genome Project and other related biological projects. The approaches presented by the authors are state-of-the-art and show how to reduce analysis times significantly, sometimes from days to minutes. High Performance Computational Methods for Biological Sequence Analysis is tremendously important to biomedical science students and researchers who are interested in applying sequence analyses to their studies, and to computational science students and researchers who are interested in applying new computational approaches to biological sequence analyses.

The complexity of living organisms surpasses our unaided habilities of analysis. Hence, computational and mathematical methods are necessary for increasing our understanding of biological systems. At the same time, there has been a phenomenal recent progress allowing the application of novel formal methods to new domains. This progress has spurred a conspicuous optimism in computational biology. This optimism, in turn, has promoted a rapid increase in collaboration between specialists of biology with specialists of computer science. Through sheer complexity, however, many important biological problems are at present intractable, and it is not clear whether we will ever be able to solve such problems. We are in the process of learning what kind of model and what kind of analysis and synthesis techniques to use for a particular problem. Some existing formalisms have been readily used in biological problems, others have been adapted to biological needs, and still others have been especially developed for biological systems. This Research Topic has examples of cases (1) employing existing methods, (2) adapting methods to biology, and (3) developing new methods. We can also see discrete and Boolean models, and the use of both simulators and model checkers. Synthesis is exemplified by manual and by machine-learning methods. We hope that the articles collected in this Research Topic will stimulate new research.

Computational biology is a rapidly expanding field, and the number and variety of computational methods used for DNA and protein sequence analysis is growing every day. These algorithms are extremely valuable to biotechnology companies and to researchers and teachers in universities. This book explains the latest computer technology for analyzing DNA, RNA, and protein sequences. Clear and easy to follow, designed specifically for the non-computer scientist, it will help biologists make better choices on which algorithm to use. New techniques and demonstrations are elucidated, as are state-of-the-art problems, and more advanced material on the latest algorithms. The primary audience for this volume are molecular biologists working either in biotechnology companies or academic research environments, individual researchers and the institutions they work for, and students. Any biologist who relies on computers should want this book.A secondary audience will be computer scientists developing techniques with applications in biology. An excellent reference for leading techniques, it will also help introduce computer scientists to the biology problems. This is an outstanding work which will be ideal for the increasing number of scientists moving into computational biology.

This volume contains the proceedings of the 7th Conference on Computational Methods in Systems Biology (CMSB 2009), held in Bologna, from August 31 to September 1, 2009. The ?rst CMSB was held in Trento in 2003, bringing together life scientists, computer scientists, engineers and physicists. The goal was to promote the c- vergence of di?erent disciplines aiming at a new understanding and description of biological systems, ?rmly ground in formal models, supported by compu- tionallanguagesandtools, ando?eringnew methodsofanalysis. The conference then moved to Paris in 2004, Edinburgh in 2005, Trento in 2006, Edinburgh in 2007 and Rostock/Warnemunde ̈ in 2008. This year the conference attracted about 45 submissions form 18 countries, mainly from Europe and North America, but also from Asia and Australia. We wish to thank all authors for their interest in CMSB 2009. After careful disc- sions, the Programme Committee eventually selected 18 papers for presentation at the conference. Each of them was accurately refereed by at least three - viewers, who delivered detailed and insightful comments and suggestions. The Conference Chairmen warmly thank all the members of the Programme C- mittee and all their sub-referees for the excellent support they gave, as well as for the friendly and constructive discussions. We also would like to thank the authorsfor havingrevisedtheir papers to addressthe comments andsuggestions by the referees.

Rice Biotechnology written by Jamie A. Goode and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-04-30 with Science categories.

Rice is the most important food crop for half the world's population. Over the last three decades, the imporvement in human nutrition and health in Asia has largely been attributable to a relatively stable and affordable rice supply. The challenge to produce enough rice for the future, however, remains daunting, as the current rate of population growth outpaces that of increases in rice production. Science has a central role to play in raising rice productivity and this book highlights areas of plant science that are particularly relevant to solving the major constraints on rice production. Examining molecular, genetic and cellular techniques, it considers recent advances in four research approaches for increasing yields and improving the nutritional quality of rice. Plant genomics: knowing the identity and location of each gene in the rice genome is of immense value in all aspects of rice science and cultivar improvement. Molecular biological approaches to increase yield: to produce more biomass by increasing photosynthetic rate and duration, and by improving grain filling. Enhancing tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses: with new DNA array technologies, it is now possible to assess global genomic response to stresses. Understanding the relationships among stress pathways may create new opportunities for gene manipulation to enhance tolerance to multiple biotic and abiotic stresses. Improving nutritional quality in the grain: knowledge of the biosynthesis of micronutrients in plants permits genetic engineering of metabolic pathways to enhance the availability of micronutrients.
