For the mathematical modeling of complex system behavior, dynamical systems play an increasing role. The flexibility and very rich phenomenology exhibited by such systems make them indispensible in this context. Control theory for dynamical systems is also a highly active field of research where a number of important results have been achieved recently. This combined course and workshop deals with recent results regarding dynamical systems and control theory, primarily in differential geometric terms as well as the applications of these fields to biological systems, with an emphasis on various aspects of the immune system and on neural networks.

A dozen contributions from the August 1991 session of an annual summer course near Stockholm, range further afield than the biological systems announced as the focus. Most however, consider the neural and immune systems from the perspective of dynamical systems theory, the unifying aspect being methodological rather than thematic. The topics include neural networks, nonlinear control theory, the generation of genetic information and real and imaginary regulatory mechanisms in the immune system. No index. Acidic paper. The favourable reception of the first edition and the encouragement received from many readers have prompted the author to bring out this new edition. This provides the opportunity for correcting a number of errors, typographical and others, contained in the first edition and making further improvements. This second edition has a new chapter on simplifying Dynamical Systems covering Poincare map, Floquet theory, Centre Manifold Theorems, normal forms of dynamical systems, elimination of passive coordinates and Liapunov-Schmidt reduction theory. It would provide a gradual transition to the study of Bifurcation, Chaos and Catastrophe in Chapter 10. Apart from this, most others - in fact all except the first three and last chapters - have been revised and enlarged to bring in some new materials, elaborate some others, especially those sections which many readers felt were rather too concise in the first edition, by providing more explana tion, examples and applications. Chapter 11 provides some good examples of this. Another example may be found in Chapter 4 where the review of Linear Algebra has been enlarged to incorporate further materials needed in this edition, for example the last section on idempotent matrices and projection would prove very useful to follow Liapunov-Schmidt reduction theory presented in Chapter 9.

This volume highlights problems from a range of biological and medical applications that can be interpreted as questions about system behavior or control. Topics include drug resistance in cancer and malaria, biological fluid dynamics, auto-regulation in the kidney, anti-coagulation therapy, evolutionary diversification and photo-transduction. Mathematical techniques used to describe and investigate these biological and medical problems include ordinary, partial and stochastic differentiation equations, hybrid discrete-continuous approaches, as well as 2 and 3D numerical simulation.

Population dynamics is an important subject in mathematical biology. A cen tral problem is to study the long-term behavior of modeling systems. Most of these systems are governed by various evolutionary equations such as difference, ordinary, functional, and partial differential equations (see, e. g. , [165, 142, 218, 119, 55]). As we know, interactive populations often live in a fluctuating environment. For example, physical environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity and the availability of food, water, and other resources usually vary in time with seasonal or daily variations. Therefore, more realistic models should be nonautonomous systems. In particular, if the data in a model are periodic functions of time with commensurate period, a periodic system arises; if these periodic functions have different (minimal) periods, we get an almost periodic system. The existing reference books, from the dynamical systems point of view, mainly focus on autonomous biological systems. The book of Hess [106J is an excellent reference for periodic parabolic boundary value problems with applications to population dynamics. Since the publication of this book there have been extensive investigations on periodic, asymptotically periodic, almost periodic, and even general nonautonomous biological systems, which in turn have motivated further development of the theory of dynamical systems. In order to explain the dynamical systems approach to periodic population problems, let us consider, as an illustration, two species periodic competitive systems dUI dt = !I(t,Ul,U2), (0.

This book, along with its companion volume, Nonlinear Dynamics New Directions: Theoretical Aspects, covers topics ranging from fractal analysis to very specific applications of the theory of dynamical systems to biology. This second volume contains mostly new applications of the theory of dynamical systems to both engineering and biology. The first volume is devoted to fundamental aspects and includes a number of important new contributions as well as some review articles that emphasize new development prospects. The topics addressed in the two volumes include a rigorous treatment of fluctuations in dynamical systems, topics in fractal analysis, studies of the transient dynamics in biological networks, synchronization in lasers, and control of chaotic systems, among others. This book also: · Develops applications of nonlinear dynamics on a diversity of topics such as patterns of synchrony in neuronal networks, laser synchronization, control of chaotic systems, and the study of transient dynamics in biological · Includes a study of self-organized regularity in long-range systems · Explains use of Levenstein's distance for measuring lexical evolution rates

The 11th International Workshop on Dynamics and Control brought together scientists and engineers from diverse fields and gave them a venue to develop a greater understanding of this discipline and how it relates to many areas in science, engineering, economics, and biology. The event gave researchers an opportunity to investigate ideas and techniques from outside their own fields of expertise, enabling a cross-pollination of dynamics and control perspectives. Now there is a book that documents the major presentations of the workshop, providing a foundation for further research. The range and diversity of papers in Dynamical Systems and Control demonstrate the remarkable reach of the subject. All of these contributed papers shed light on a multiplicity of physical, biological, and economic phenomena through lines of reasoning that originate and grow from this discipline. The editors divide the book into three parts. The first covers fundamental advances in dynamics, dynamical systems, and control. These papers represent ideas that can be applied to several areas of interest. The second part deals with new and innovative techniques and their application to a variety of interesting problems, from the control of cars and robots, to the dynamics of ships and suspension bridges, and the determination of optimal spacecraft trajectories. The third section relates to social, economic, and biological issues. It reveals the wealth of understanding that can be obtained through a dynamics and control approach to issues such as epidemics, economic games, neo-cortical synchronization, and human posture control.
