This is the story of two young children, Erin and Nathan, who live far away from New Orleans. They are visiting the big city with their parents and grandparents and seeing their very first Mardi Gras parade. They are wearing costumes their grandmother made so they are as colorful as other parade goers are. They hear the big marching bands, Dixieland jazz and Cajun Music. They smell spicy foods - crawfish pie, jambalaya, red beans and rice. They learn to catch beads, doubloons and other favors thrown by the masked riders from atop the huge, exotic floats. They have a wonderful time and go back to their mountain home with bags of things they have caught and hundreds of memories to share.

New Orleans has a reputation: the food, the fun, and the festivals! The Saints, the Superdome! The river, the raucous party life, casinos, crawfish, king cake, and Mardi Gras krewes. To many in the Gulf South, New Orleans brings to mind the tragedy of Katrina, now eleven years after a flooded city, no one forgetting and some still recovering. Jamey Kavanaugh had come to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, but more than that, to escape a life that in twenty years never took her outside the neigh

A question about your school days, elementary, high school, and college: Good times? Bad times? A mix of both? Small schools? Large schools? Did size matter? Were some years more enjoyable, more memorable than others? Your teachers? How many did you have? Do you remember their names? Did you have a favorite? What made your favorite(s) special? "Teach Me Something, Mister" is a follow-up to "Throw Me Something, Mister" but quite different. "Throw Me..." is fiction. "Teach Me..." is real! The stories were sent to the author from teachers and friends recalling their school life. They are mostly fun; regret and sadness in a few. It's not all good, no matter how much we would like it to be. The stories are about teachers, students and school secretaries, cooks and custodians, parents and principals. They will remind you of your school days, and hopefully prompt a few thanksgivings. The author welcomes your shared stories and feedback. Maybe you should write your own school stories, for your family to remember and cherish? The young mother asked her five-year-old "What did you learn in school today?" The kid replied, "I guess not enough. Miss Banks said she'd see me again tomorrow."

Hey Mister, throw me some beads!' is a phrase that is iconic in New Orleans' Mardi Gras street lingo. Strings of beads, doubloons, and other trinkets are passed out or thrown from the floats in the Mardi Gras parades to spectators lining the streets. Between 1974 and 1982, New Yorker Bruce Gilden became a regular of the Mardi Gras scene. The energy, alongside the social and cultural mores of Mardi Gras were all new for him, allowing him to capture the raw intensity of the crowds with an unaffected eye.'

Second Line Rescue: Improvised Responses to Katrina and Rita chronicles the brave and creative acts through which Gulf Coast people rescued their neighbors during the chaotic aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Ordinary citizens joined in with whatever resources they had. Unlike many of the official responders, vernacular rescuers found ways around paralysis produced by a breakdown in communications and infrastructure. They were able to dispel unfounded fears produced by erroneous or questionable reporting. The essays, personal narratives, media reports, and field studies presented here all have to do with effective and often ingenious answers that emerged from the people themselves. Their solutions are remarkably different from the hamstrung government response, and their perspectives are a tonic to sensationalized media coverage. The first part of the collection deals with Gulf Coast rescuers from outside stricken communities: those who, safe in their own homes and neighborhoods, marshaled their resources to help their fellow citizens. It includes some analysis and scholarly approaches, but it also includes direct responses and firsthand field reports. The second part features the words of hurricane survivors displaced from New Orleans and other Gulf Coast communities to Houston, Texas. In many cases, the “victims” themselves were the first responders, rescuing family, friends, and strangers. All of the stories, whether from the “outside” or “inside” responders, reveal a shared history of close-knit community bonds and survival skills sharpened by hard times. This book is about what went right in the aftermath of Katrina and Rita—in spite of all that went so wrong.

"Honigsberg considers the impact of the change that occurred in the fall of 1967, when Martin Luther King's dream of blacks and whites working together in a cooperative partnership gave way to the new cry of "Black Power." His memoir provides a glimpse into the civil rights movement and those who were forever changed by its struggle for human dignity and vision of racial justice and equality."--Jacket.
