A memoir about home and belonging, from the author of I KNOW WHY THE CAGED BIRD SINGS 'A brilliant writer, a fierce friend and a truly phenomenal woman' BARACK OBAMA Maya Angelou's seven volumes of autobiography, beginning with I KNOW WHY THE CAGED BIRD SINGS, are a testament to the talents and resilience of this extraordinary writer. Though she fiercely loves the world, as a black woman, she also knows its cruelty. Angelou has known discrimination and extreme poverty, but also hope, joy, achievement and celebration. In the fifth volume, Maya Angelou emigrates to Ghana only to discover that 'you can't go home again', but she comes to a new awareness of love and friendship, civil rights and slavery - and the myth of mother Africa. 'She moved through the world with unshakeable calm, confidence and a fierce grace . . . She will always be the rainbow in my clouds' OPRAH WINFREY 'She was important in so many ways. She launched African American women writing in the United States. She was generous to a fault. She had nineteen talents - used ten. And was a real original. There is no duplicate' TONI MORRISON

Music And The Racial Imagination written by Ronald M. Radano and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with Music categories.

"A specter lurks in the house of music, and it goes by the name of race," write Ronald Radano and Philip Bohlman in their introduction. Yet the intimate relationship between race and music has rarely been examined by contemporary scholars, most of whom have abandoned it for the more enlightened notions of ethnicity and culture. Here, a distinguished group of contributors confront the issue head on. Representing an unusually broad range of academic disciplines and geographic regions, they critically examine how the imagination of race has influenced musical production, reception, and scholarly analysis, even as they reject the objectivity of the concept itself. Each essay follows the lead of the substantial introduction, which reviews the history of race in European and American, non-Western and global musics, placing it within the contexts of the colonial experience and the more recent formation of "world music." Offering a bold, new revisionist agenda for musicology in a postmodern, postcolonial world, this book will appeal to students of culture and race across the humanities and social sciences.

Nationalists Cosmopolitans And Popular Music In Zimbabwe written by Thomas Turino and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-06-20 with Music categories.

Hailed as a national hero and musical revolutionary, Thomas Mapfumo, along with other Zimbabwean artists, burst onto the music scene in the 1980s with a unique style that combined electric guitar with indigenous Shona music and instruments. The development of this music from its roots in the early Rhodesian era to the present and the ways this and other styles articulated with Zimbabwean nationalism is the focus of Thomas Turino's new study. Turino examines the emergence of cosmopolitan culture among the black middle class and how this gave rise to a variety of urban-popular styles modeled on influences ranging from the Mills Brothers to Elvis. He also shows how cosmopolitanism gave rise to the nationalist movement itself, explaining the combination of "foreign" and indigenous elements that so often define nationalist art and cultural projects. The first book-length look at the role of music in African nationalism, Turino's work delves deeper than most books about popular music and challenges the reader to think about the lives and struggles of the people behind the surface appeal of world music.

African Music Power And Being In Colonial Zimbabwe written by Mhoze Chikowero and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-11-24 with Music categories.

In this new history of music in Zimbabwe, Mhoze Chikowero deftly uses African sources to interrogate the copious colonial archive, reading it as a confessional voice along and against the grain to write a complex history of music, colonialism, and African self-liberation. Chikowero's book begins in the 1890s with missionary crusades against African performative cultures and African students being inducted into mission bands, which contextualize the music of segregated urban and mining company dance halls in the 1930s, and he builds genealogies of the Chimurenga music later popularized by guerrilla artists like Dorothy Masuku, Zexie Manatsa, Thomas Mapfumo, and others in the 1970s. Chikowero shows how Africans deployed their music and indigenous knowledge systems to fight for their freedom from British colonial domination and to assert their cultural sovereignty.

Stars When The Sun Shines written by Wayne Stier and has been published by Weiser Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-04-01 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Spurred by the doctor’s predictions of an early death, Wayne Stier stayed out in front of time until he left it all together. Stier grew up in Belle Plaine, Minnesota, in the 1950s and 60s. Diagnosed with testicular cancer in his early 20s, and given a less than 50% chance of 5-year survival, Wayne and his wife Mars decided to make the most of the time he had. From Zen cherry blossoms to Japanese theatre. From Hawaiian breathing lessons to Thai healers. Stars When the Sun Shines is the spiritual memoir of a man whose wisdom gains on him as he learns to trust his intuition. And, in the reading, we’ll surely learn lessons of our own. Or as Stier lays down his hope, “The myth of my life is a metaphor for yours.” His writing is informed by everyone he talked to, everywhere he went. This is a book that will make you laugh and think. Cry and love. Stier’s writing burned through illusions to conclusions about a life so full he forgot he was dying... until he did, in Hawaii, May 30, 2009, just weeks after his 62nd birthday. A note from the publisher: I met Wayne Stier when I was 5 and he was 6. We grew up in the same town, both of us suspecting there must be more in the world. The first time I published his work was in our high school newspaper. The last time I saw him until a few weeks before he died he was telling me that the pop (soda) in my hand might exist in another plane in a different way or might not exist at all. The very last time I saw him we talked all night and planned at least three more books. I am beyond grateful to have met him. Saint, holy man, fool—all of those and more.

BLACK LIONS, LOVE AND WAR A HISTORICAL DRAMA ON THE BRITISH--ASHANTI WARS. This work of well over a decade, is dedicated to Esi Ayensu of Cape Coast, and to the late Clive Compton, Barrister-At-Law and the late MaryAnn Compton, my loving parents who saw to it that I went to school, learned good manners and be polite, and also strong, for you may suffer long for what you may want. Everyone comes under my microscopic pen and my impeccable candor in this scholarly historical drama of love and war. And as an American I look out for the interest of the entire vast region, from as far down to Brazil Amazon, to U.S.A, Canada, Carribean Island, hoping Americans will read and enjoy my work. But this is too narrow. From my studies in Literature at U.C.L.A. where I earned a B.A. in Literature, on to my M.A. in Education at Georgia State University and my subsequent admission in the Doctoral program, I was taught NOT to see the tree but the entire forest. So now I hope that the entire World will read and enjoy my book and gain from it. It is sheer fun for me to read, create, write, and bring out my artistry, remembering always that this is what distinguishes me from the goat, the cow, the donkey and makes me human. Originate and be Scholarly and remember too that there is nothing as fiction, for the writer draws from life itself, the sine qua non of the pen. I LIVE FOR ART. MELVIN F.
