Tiahuanaco Stonework explores the remarkable feats of engineering achieved by the pre-Columbian civilization of Tiahuanaco, near Lake Titicaca in Bolivia. This book investigates how, without iron tools or the wheel, they constructed massive monumental structures using precisely cut stones. It delves into the ancient engineering and stone-cutting techniques that enabled them to shape, transport, and assemble andesite blocks weighing several tons. The study highlights the ingenuity required to build complexes like Kalasasaya, Akapana, and Puma Punku, revealing their profound understanding of stone properties. The book argues that Tiahuanaco stonemasons possessed advanced knowledge, combining hammering, abrasion, and possibly water-based methods. It examines archaeological evidence, including tool marks, geological studies, and ethnohistorical accounts, to provide a holistic understanding of their construction processes. Each chapter builds upon the previous, starting with historical context, then moving to specific architectural features, and finally discussing the tools, transportation methods, and techniques. This book is unique in its detailed, evidence-based analysis, making it valuable for anyone interested in archaeology, ancient Andean technology, or the history of the Andes.

The world's most artful and skillful stone architecture is found at Tiahuanaco at the southern end of Lake Titicaca in Bolivia. The precision of the stone masonry rivals that of the Incas to the point that writers from Spanish chroniclers of the sixteenth century to twentieth-century authors have claimed that Tiahuanaco not only served as a model for Inca architecture and stone masonry, but that the Incas even imported stonemasons from the Titicaca Basin to construct their buildings. Experiments aimed at replicating the astounding feats of the Tiahuanaco stonecutters--perfectly planar surfaces, perfect exterior and interior right angles, and precision to within 1 mm--throw light on the stonemasons' skill and knowledge, especially of geometry and mathematics. Detailed analyses of building stones yield insights into the architecture of Tiahuanaco, including its appearance, rules of composition, canons, and production, filling a significant gap in the understanding of Tiahuanaco's material culture.

The Ancient Central Andes presents a general overview of the prehistoric peoples and cultures of the Central Andes, the region now encompassing most of Peru and significant parts of Ecuador, Bolivia, northern Chile, and northwestern Argentina. The book contextualizes past and modern scholarship and provides a balanced view of current research. Two opening chapters present the intellectual, political, and practical background and history of research in the Central Andes and the spatial, temporal, and formal dimensions of the study of its past. Chapters then proceed in chronological order from remote antiquity to the Spanish Conquest. A number of important themes run through the book, including: the tension between those scholars who wish to study Peruvian antiquity on a comparative basis and those who take historicist approaches; the concept of "Lo Andino," commonly used by many specialists that assumes long-term, unchanging patterns of culture some of which are claimed to persist to the present; and culture change related to severe environmental events. Consensus opinions on interpretations are highlighted as are disputes among scholars regarding interpretations of the past. The Ancient Central Andes provides an up-to-date, objective survey of the archaeology of the Central Andes that is much needed. Students and interested readers will benefit greatly from this introduction to a key period in South America’s past.

Evolutionary And Interpretive Archaeologies written by Ethan Cochrane and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-09-16 with Social Science categories.
This collection of original articles compares various key archaeological topics—agency, violence, social groups, diffusion—from evolutionary and interpretive perspectives. These two strands represent the major current theoretical poles in the discipline. By comparing and contrasting the insights they provide into major archaeological themes, this volume demonstrates the importance of theoretical frameworks in archaeological interpretations. Chapter authors discuss relevant Darwinian or interpretive theory with short archaeological and anthropological case studies to illustrate the substantive conclusions produced. The book will advance debate and contribute to a better understanding of the goals and research strategies that comprise these distinct research traditions.
