Six years have passed since this book was written. These years have been marked by rapid progress in theoretical and experimental studies of ocean tides and by the expansion of their applications, particularly in satellite navigation and space geodesy. In their turn, improvements in the methods of space navigation and space geodesy have resulted in the development of new technology to obtain empirical information and in the ever-increasing use of the data of satellite altimetry. Apart from this purely experimental aspect, important results have also been obtained in the field of the theory of ocean tides. These are, firstly, the solution of the problem that has remained in the background for a long time, regarding the parameterization of solitary islands, island chains, and archipelagoes; secondly, the conclusion of the investigations into the global interaction of oceanic and atmospheric gravitational tides and the establishment of the nature of the latter; thirdly, intensive development of investigations into the vertical structure of tidal flow, based on the high level models in the hierarchy of the planetary boundary-level models; fourthly, the appearance of the results produced by modelling the evolution of the spectrum of natural oscillations and global tides in the Paleoocean and their use in constructing the theory of the tidal evolution of the Earth-Moon system; and, finally, the development of new combined methods to calculate the global ocean tides. In this book we have tried to present systematically the current state of knowledge on ocean tides and, after a critical interpretation, to focus attention on questions as yet unsolved, the purposeful and systematic study of which would facilitate a speedy progress in ascertaining the dynamics of ocean tides - an important and intensively developing component part of the science of the ocean.

Paperback. Our knowledge of the dynamics of the upper atmosphere has increased substantially with the launch of NASA's Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS). The winds associated with tides and planetary scale disturbances have been found to be significantly larger than expected. What has been even more surprising is the extent to which airglow variability is controlled by these dynamics. Variations in airglow emission rate have been observed for many decades, but until the global scale picture became available, their origin remained a mystery. Hence this session on Influence of Tides on Species Concentrations was particularly timely. This volume consists of papers presented at the session, including model results, satellite observations, and ground-based observations. What is clear from this volume is the very dominant role of dynamics in airglow variability and species concentrations. Experimental papers deal with GLO observations of E- and F-

Hydrodynamics And Sediment Dynamics Of Tidal Inlets written by David G. Aubrey and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04-18 with Science categories.
Along much of the shoreline of the world, tidal inlets play an important role in nearshore processes, providing links between the coastal oceans and protected embayments. Their study is of particular importance not only for the understanding of fundamental processes in coastal oceanography but also for engineering and the proper management of the delicate equilibrium of our shorelines. This volume, based on the International Symposium on Hydrodynamics and Sediment Dynamics of Tidal Inlets held at Woods Hole, MA, presents the reader with an overview of contemporary research on these important features. The coverage includes: - mathematical modelling, including a review of inlet hydrodynamics, - observations on hydrodynamics, - sedimentology and morphology, - tidal deltas, - processes and policies pertaining to sedimentation, and the - impacts of shore protection and dredging in beaches.

Tides written by Jonathan White and has been published by Trinity University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-01-16 with Nature categories.
In Tides: The Science and Spirit of the Ocean, writer, sailor, and surfer Jonathan White takes readers across the globe to discover the science and spirit of ocean tides. In the Arctic, White shimmies under the ice with an Inuit elder to hunt for mussels in the dark cavities left behind at low tide; in China, he races the Silver Dragon, a twenty-five-foot tidal bore that crashes eighty miles up the Qiantang River; in France, he interviews the monks that live in the tide-wrapped monastery of Mont Saint-Michel; in Chile and Scotland, he investigates the growth of tidal power generation; and in Panama and Venice, he delves into how the threat of sea level rise is changing human culture—the very old and very new. Tides combines lyrical prose, colorful adventure travel, and provocative scientific inquiry into the elemental, mysterious paradox that keeps our planet’s waters in constant motion. Photographs, scientific figures, line drawings, and sixteen color photos dramatically illustrate this engaging, expert tour of the tides.

Tidal Mixing Benefits written by Yves Earhart and has been published by Publifye AS this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-02-18 with Science categories.
Tidal mixing, the churning of coastal waters by tidal currents, plays a vital role in marine productivity. Tidal Mixing Benefits explores how this process stimulates biological activity and nutrient cycling, particularly the resuspension of sediment-bound nutrients, influencing phytoplankton growth, and ultimately supporting coastal ecosystems. The book examines the hydrodynamics of tidal mixing, its impact on nutrient availability (such as nitrogen and phosphorus), and the response of phytoplankton communities, highlighting tidal mixing as a primary driver of marine productivity. Because conventional approaches often underestimate the role of physical processes in regulating biological productivity, the book emphasizes incorporating tidal mixing dynamics into marine ecosystem models for more accurate coastal resource management. The book progresses from establishing a framework for understanding tidal hydrodynamics to detailing the mechanisms by which tidal mixing influences nutrient cycling. It then explores the biological consequences of enhanced nutrient availability, focusing on phytoplankton dynamics and primary production. Case studies from diverse coastal environments illustrate how tidal mixing shapes ecosystem structure and function. The book concludes with a discussion of the implications for coastal management and conservation, advocating for the protection of areas crucial for marine productivity. This unique perspective is valuable for researchers, students, and environmental professionals in oceanography, ecology, and environmental management.

Positive Tidal Forces written by Sierra Layne and has been published by Publifye AS this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-02-18 with Science categories.
""Positive Tidal Forces"" explores the vital and often overlooked role of tidal dynamics in shaping coastal ecosystems. The book reveals how the rhythmic push and pull of tides, driven by the moon and sun, influences sea temperatures and, consequently, marine life. Intriguingly, tidal forces affect water column mixing, which in turn impacts nutrient distribution and oxygen levels, directly influencing fish migration patterns. The book delves into the mechanisms by which tidal forces regulate temperature in coastal waters and how these temperature variations act as crucial cues for fish. It highlights how these interactions between tidal currents and coastal geography create unique thermal environments. Progressing from basic tidal principles to case studies, impacts on fish and ecosystems, and concluding with conservation implications, the book offers practical recommendations for mitigating climate change effects on tide-dependent marine life.
