Time Change is the story of the education of a woman. It was in Darjeeling, India, during a summer's stay, alone in the cozy atmosphere of a family hotel, that Cooke met the recently widowed Crown Prince of Sikkim. The story of her engagement and wedding to the Prince and her life in this exotic hidden-away world became the center of international attention and fascination. It is told in full here, for the first time, in Hope Cooke's own voice, with a sharp eye and an uncommon ear for atmosphere and intrigue. It was very soon after their marriage that her husband succeeded his father to the throne. Nearly submerged by the responsibilities of her husband's public (and private) preoccupations and weighed down by the isolation, Cooke worked with children and the schools and coordinated the handicrafts industry for export. Gradually, Hope Cooke grew from a spirited, gifted girl to a many-faceted woman of depth and independence. Eventually Sikkim, increasingly a pawn of power politics, was annexed by India. This is a study of how, and why, the British economy has changed since 1951. It covers the Golden Age of 1945-1973 when unemployment was below one million; when governments built millions of council houses and flats; when electricity, telephones, and gas were supplied by nationalised monopolies; when income and wealth inequality were narrowing; and when the UK was not a member of the European Economic Community. Moving through the inflation, rising unemployment, and rapid contraction of the manufacturing industry from the mid- 1970s, Changing Times examines the transfer of assets which was effected in the privatisation of public housing and nationalised industries from the early 1980s. The role of the State changed as public investment fell. The financing of old-age care, of state pensions, and of the National Health Service became of increasing concern and were less politically amenable to the approach of using private finance (the Private Finance Initiative and tuition fees) to fund former public obligations. Changes were made to the system of taxation, but public expenditure changed little as a share of national income, although the government now built little. Difficulties emerged in ensuring adequate housing for a growing population, and uncertainty grew as to where future investment in necessities like electricity supply would come from. Having narrowed in the Golden Age, inequality of income and wealth widened. Environmental concerns also grew, from the local smogs of the 1950s, through the concern with acid rain from the 1960s, to the current global concern with climate change. The financial crash of 2008 and the decision to 'Brexit' in the referendum of 2016 reduced economic growth and highlighted the extent of economic change since 1951. This is a study of that change.

This book has two aims; first, to provide a new account of time's arrow in light of relativity theory; second, to explain how God, being eternal, relates to our world, marked as it is by change and time. In part one, Saudek argues that time is not the expansive universal 'wave' that is appears to be, but nor are we living in an unchanging block. Rather, time is real but local: there are infinitely many arrows of time in the universe, each with their own fixed past and open future. This model is based on the ontology of substances which can exist in different states, marked by different properties. On this basis, a derivation of temporal precedence and of the asymmetry between the fixed past and the open future is provided. Time's arrow is thus 'attached' to substances, and is therefore a local rather than global phenomenon, though by no means an illusory or merely subjective one. In part two, this model is then applied to the perennial questions concerning the relationship between divine eternity and the temporal world: How can my future choices be free if God already knows what I will do? Can God act if He is not in time? Through the lens of relativity theory, such questions are shown to appear in a completely new light. The book combines insights from theoretical physics with ancient and contemporary philosophy into a unique synthesis, broaching a wealth of key issues including the arrow of time, the evolution of the cosmos, and a physics-based defence of eternalism in philosophical theology.

In this paper, time changes of the Brownian motions on generalized Sierpinski carpets including n-dimensional cube [0,1]n are studied. Intuitively time change corresponds to alteration to density of the medium where the heat flows. In case of the Brownian motion on [0,1]n, density of the medium is homogeneous and represented by the Lebesgue measure. The author's study includes densities which are singular to the homogeneous one. He establishes a rich class of measures called measures having weak exponential decay. This class contains measures which are singular to the homogeneous one such as Liouville measures on [0,1]2 and self-similar measures. The author shows the existence of time changed process and associated jointly continuous heat kernel for this class of measures. Furthermore, he obtains diagonal lower and upper estimates of the heat kernel as time tends to 0. In particular, to express the principal part of the lower diagonal heat kernel estimate, he introduces “protodistance” associated with the density as a substitute of ordinary metric. If the density has the volume doubling property with respect to the Euclidean metric, the protodistance is shown to produce metrics under which upper off-diagonal sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimate and lower near diagonal heat kernel estimate will be shown.
