De in Tolerantie & Coornhert bijeengebrachte teksten zijn filosofisch-historische verkenningen, geschreven tussen 2010 en 2022. Pas met het schrijven van het grote openingsessay ‘Tolerantie in tweevoud’ en het nawoord ‘Coornhert als Pelagius redivivus’ – beide uit 2022 – werd duidelijk, dat en hoe deze stukken met de chronologisch daaraan voorafgaande teksten op een vooraf niet vermoede wijze samenhingen. Constraint on Trial examines the life and thought of Dirck Volckertsz Coornhert (1522-1990). The self-made Coornhert was a notary, secretary, artist, poet, playwright, translator, theologian, but most of all, he was an intrepid controversialist, "born to contradict", indefatigable in his critique of the public church and sects. His main concern in polemics and disputations was the defense of freedom of conscience and advocacy of toleration. Coornhert's individualism made him eschew any restrictions on personal religious choice. His tolerationist writings, especially Synod on the Freedom of Conscience (1582) and Trial of the Killing of Heretics(1590), were rooted in his spiritualist belief system. He found inspiration in other protagonists of religious freedom, such as Sebastian Franck and Castellio, but his ideas were uniquely Coornhertian. He possessed an unrelenting drive to combat constraint, and regarded himself as "God's battering ram, meant to break down the prison of men's conscience".

Met de vestiging van de V.P.R.O.-studio en de secretariaten van tal van vrijzinnig protestantse organisaties op de Nieuwegracht 27 in Utrecht belichaamde dit grachtenpand ooit de droom van een zuil die al wat vrijzinnig protestants was zou verenigen. Anno 2009 is die droom vervlogen en is het Nederlandse vrijzinnig protestantisme in zijn institutionele of organisatorische vorm nauwelijks meer zichtbaar. Des te relevanter wordt juist dan de vraag naar die plekken in het collectieve geheugen van de protestantse vrijzinnigen die als 'plaatsen van herinnering' zijn aan te merken: de plekken waaraan de vrijzinnige herinnering zich heeft gehecht. Het gaat in deze bundel niet alleen om concrete plekken waaraan de collectieve herinnering vastzit en waarmee vrijzinnigen zich kunnen identificeren maar ook om symbolische plaatsen in de geest, in de vorm van een begrip (bijvoorbeeld tolerantie) of een persoon (bijv. Coornhert), met wie de vrijzinnigen zich van oudsher verbonden hebben gevoeld. Deze benadering impliceert een ruime opvatting van vrijzinnigheid.

De veelzijdige humanist D.V. Coornhert (1522-1590) was vanwege zijn radicale ideeën reeds tijdens zijn leven een veelbesproken man. Zo noemde de hervormer Calvijn hem 'de botte Hollander'. Behalve theoloog was hij ook toneelschrijver, dichter, ethicus en taalvernieuwer. Hij werd aangevallen als pelagiaan, warhoofd, verkondiger van een heidense zedenleer. 'Geboren voor de contramine' was hij een 'wondre ijveraar', 'onverdraagzaam in den naam der verdragelijkheid', een van de grootste vijanden van de gereformeerde kerk, een dolle hond, dronkaard en ezel, een hypocriet en 'valse broeder', heresiarch en libertijn. Maar men loofde hem ook als de Cato van de Reformatie, de Socrates en Cicero van Nederland, aartsvijand van gewetensdwang en grootste kampioen in de strijd om godsdienstvrijheid, 'een man van ongemeene talenten', apostel der volmaakbaarheid en erasmiaans humanist. Deze studie laat zien hoe Coornhert, een vat vol tegenstrijdigheden, de gemoederen tot op de dag van vandaag heeft beziggehouden.

Simon Episcopius (1583-1643), who began his theological career as the protégé of Jacobus Arminius, led the Arminians at the Synod of Dort and was instrumental in guaranteeing Arminianism's survival. This book breaks new ground by clearly showing how, in the process of working out the implications of the theological trajectories which Arminius established, Episcopius introduced significant changes in his master's theology. It begins by demonstrating changes between Episcopius' early theological works and Arminius' writings, and then even greater changes in his mature theological work, Institutiones Theologicæ. It defends the idea that Arminianism represented a pre-Calvinist movement within the Netherlands, which not only rejected Genevan predestination, but also intentionally moved away from Reformed Scholasticism.
