In Topographies of Class, Sabine Hake explores why Weimar Berlin has had such a powerful hold on the urban imagination. Approaching Weimar architectural culture from the perspective of mass discourse and class analysis, Hake examines the way in which architectural projects; debates; and representations in literature, photography, and film played a key role in establishing the terms under which contemporaries made sense of the rise of white-collar society. Focusing on the so-called stabilization period, Topographies of Class maps out complex relationships between modern architecture and mass society, from Martin Wagner's planning initiatives and Erich Mendelsohn's functionalist buildings, to the most famous Berlin texts of the period, Alfred Döblin's city novel Berlin Alexanderplatz (1929) and Walter Ruttmann's city film Berlin, Symphony of the Big City (1927). Hake draws on critical, philosophical, literary, photographic, and filmic texts to reconstruct the urban imagination at a key point in the history of German modernity, making this the first study---in English or German---to take an interdisciplinary approach to the rich architectural culture of Weimar Berlin. Sabine Hake is Professor and Texas Chair of German Literature and Culture at the University of Texas at Austin. This qualitative study asks whether structural transformation brought about by modernization in contemporary urban India can induce growing equality in the sense of mutual respect between the lower and the middle classes. From the idographic context of female domestic workers and their employers in Chennai (Tamil Nadu) a general type of modernity for the periphery is outlined. Even though changes in this relation are apparent and various forms of respect and recognition are developing, the deep hierarchical differences persist despite - or precisely because of - modernity in the form of capitalism. Johanna Vogel (Dr.) studied Intercultural Business Studies at the University of Passau and received 2017 her PhD in Human Geography at the University of Bayreuth.

Stimulus class formation has been studied independently by two groups of researchers. One group has come out of a learning theory approach, while the second has developed out of a behavior analytic tradition. The purpose of the present volume is to further establish the ties between these two research areas while allowing for differences in approach to the questions asked. The book is loosely organized around four themes. The first two sections deal with what constitutes functional and equivalence classes in animals and humans. In the third section, the authors attempt to identify stimulus control variables that contribute to the formation of equivalences classes. The last section deals with the complex issue of the role of verbal behavior in equivalence classes. The goal of the book is to provide the reader with a better understanding of the current state of research and theory in stimulus class formation. It is also hoped that it will stimulate research into how and under what conditions, stimulus classes can form.

Reinforcement: Behavioral Analyses covers the proceedings of the 1970 Symposium on Schedule-induced and Schedule-Dependent Phenomena, held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This symposium highlights theoretically inclined papers on reinforcement processes. This text contains 10 chapters and begins with a description of how behavior is induced by various environmental events, especially reinforcing events, as well as the relationship between control by inducing stimuli and reinforceability. The subsequent chapters deal with reinforcement phenomena in terms of preference relations and the conditioned emotional responses in terms of opposing motivational processes. These topics are followed by reviews of schedule-dependent effects of preaversive stimuli and the maintenance of behavior by apparent reinforcers that might be expected to punish, as well as the identification of critical variable that underlie the phenomenon. Other chapters examine the interactions between operant and responded conditioning processes. The final chapters outline the experiments on behavior stream whose hallmark is reinforcement if the absence of specified behavior. These chapters emphasize the analogy between the evolution of species and the modification of behavior. This book will be of value to behaviorists and psychologists.

This Research Topic is the second volume of the 'Community Series in Neurobiological Biomarkers for Developing Novel Treatments of Substance and Non-Substance Addiction'. Please see the first volume here. Many people suffer from substance (from nicotine or alcohol to heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, etc) or non-substance (from gaming/gambling to shopping, internet, smartphone, etc) addiction. Both types of addiction are associated with severe health, economic and social consequences and are far too often result in both familial and personal tragedies. Unfortunately, current treatments are not very effective for either substance or non-substance addiction so novel treatments are desperately needed. For example, for nicotine addiction, despite very well-documented health risks of cigarette smoking and its economic and societal costs, globally, more than 30% of males still smoke, and although many smokers desire to quit, only approximately 5-30% will achieve abstinence with 6 months or more of the best available current treatments. And the story for nicotine addiction is far from unique, presenting a huge challenge for the entire addiction field. Therefore, there is a vital need to improve outcomes for the treatment of both substance and non-substance addictions. Recent work exploring neurobiological mechanisms of the treatment response at the molecular, cellular and systems levels with a broad range of technologies, such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), genetics and genomics, have opened new avenues for developing novel treatments through the detection of neurobiological biomarkers predicting efficacious outcomes in addicted patients.
