Excerpt from The Torontonensis, 1940, Vol. 42 At the beginning of the term I put before you the supreme need of hard work and full prepar ation for whatever lay ahead. Seriousness and diligence and care for bodily as well as mental and moral fitness have been the background of our work, our games and our recreations. I would like to express my hearty thanks to the Editor and staff of The Varsity for the fine lead they have given to the whole student body. They have realized that we are living at a great time and must have some greatness of soul with which we may meet it. As Canadians we have felt that in the passing of John Buchan, Lord Tweedsmuir, we have lost a good friend, a great and cultured scholar, and one who really understood our ambitions, our strivings and our ideals. Some of his words I would specially wish to emphasize. (1) In speaking in our own Convocation Hall when he received an honorary degree in 1935, he said: If the main function of a university is, as I believe it to be, the guardianship of the central culture of mankind, the trusteeship of humane learning, then the preservation of this spiritual democracy must be a vital part of its purpose. Canadian women have worked, individually and collectively, at home and abroad, as creators of historical memory. This engaging collection of essays seeks to create an awareness of the contributions made by women to history and the historical profession from 1870 to 1970 in English Canada. Creating Historical Memory explores the wide range of careers that women have forged for themselves as writers and preservers of history within, outside, and on the margins of the academy. The authors suggest some of the institutional and intellectual locations from which English Canadian women have worked as historians and attempt to problematize in different ways and to varying degrees, the relationship between women and historical practice.
