Seven years into the 2030 Agenda, there is an urgent need to understand where the world stands in eliminating hunger and food insecurity, as well as in ensuring sustainable agriculture. FAO's new report, “Tracking progress on food and agriculture-related SDG indicators”, offers analysis and trends on indicators across eight SDGs (1, 2, 5, 6, 10, 12, 14 and 15), highlighting areas of progress and areas where further effort is needed. During 2022, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) jointly undertook a project to identify and assess research and data from four Southeast Asian countries related to the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicator 14.4.1 – the proportion of fish stocks within biologically sustainable levels. The goals of this project were: (1) to increase the visibility of research and datasets by making them searchable on OpenASFA, a system for creating, storing and publishing abstracts and bibliographic references; and (2) to analyse knowledge strengths and gaps in the region and make recommendations for improving the accessibility of research and data. This document presents the final report of the project, including the methodology, results and recommendations for future work.

This open access book showcases the innovative practices of Big Earth Data methods through a collection of comprehensive case studies from China to monitor and evaluate indicators for seven SDGs, i.e., zero hunger (SDG 2), clean water and sanitation (SDG 6), affordable and clean energy (SDG 7), sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11), climate action (SDG 13), life below water (SDG 14), life on land (SDG 15), and to analyze the interactions among multiple SDGs indicators. The emphasis on Big Earth Data is highly relevant within the context of growing global challenges. Disaster risk mitigation, climate change, global food security, resource management, and environmental challenges all are interlinked through earth systems and processes that are independent of human constructs. Therefore, these case studies highlight methods and practices of spatial information mining and integrated SDG evaluation, which include evaluating the synergy and trade-off relationships among the SDGs in the context of their correlations; simulating multiple indicators’ interactions in future environmental, economic and social scenarios in the context of their temporal variations; designing integrated evaluations of regional SDGs in the context of experience with the study of multiple indicators. Big Earth Data therefore has the potential to support informed policy and decision support at global, regional, and local scales.

This publication marks the first collaborative effort between the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the Pacific Community (SPC) to address food security and nutrition in the Pacific Islands, as well as in Maldives and Timor-Leste.The Pacific Island countries, classified as Small Island Developing States (SIDS) by the United Nations, share common characteristics and challenges with SIDS in other regions, such as the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean. These nations are geographically isolated, with relatively small land areas and vast ocean territories within their exclusive economic zones. Their populations are often dispersed across numerous small islands, and transportation within and between countries is physically demanding and costly, posing difficulties for both domestic logistics and import/export activities.Many individuals in these countries rely heavily on terrestrial and marine ecosystems for sustenance and livelihoods. However, these ecosystems are fragile and highly susceptible to natural hazards, including earthquakes, tsunamis, extreme weather events, and the impacts of climate change. Both agriculture and fisheries sectors face significant challenges as populations increase and urbanization takes place. Additionally, the shift from small-scale subsistence farming and fishing to commercial approaches further complicates the situation. Conversely, migration to urban centres or emigration overseas is leading to the decline of populations in many outer-island communities.Understanding and addressing these complex issues is crucial to improving food security and nutrition in the Pacific Island countries, as well as in Maldives and Timor-Leste. This collaborative report highlights the specific challenges faced by these nations and presents opportunities for sustainable development and resilience building in the face of evolving socioeconomic and environmental circumstances. By promoting comprehensive strategies and cooperation among stakeholders, this partnership aims to support the well-being and livelihoods of the populations in the region.
