Everyone is required to make decisions and solve problems in their business and personal lives. Many are handled quickly and without much thought, but most of us procrastinate or over analyze the more important decisions. Decision-Making Training contains all the materials needed to train others to make effective and appropriate decisions. The book offers practical, ready-to-use content that enables trainers and facilitators to quickly create half-day, full-day, and multi-day workshops. This book focuses on helping individuals define the elements of effective decision-making techniques and provides the skills needed for success. It provides an easily understandable structured process, and is designed to train people interactively as they develop and use the strategies presented to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their decisions. Users will find advice for choosing training session content, sample training agendas, and step-by-step preparation and training delivery instructions. Exercises, handouts, assessments, and practice tools will help users develop training for both individual and organizational needs, become a more effective and efficient facilitator, and ensure training is on target and gets results, and build their own skills in effective decision-making. As part of the ASTD Trainer's Workshop series, readers have access to copies of all assessments, training instruments, handouts, and PowerPoint presentations used in the book.

Making Decisions Under Stress: Implications for Individual and Team Training represents the culmination of a seven-year research project called TADMUS (tactical decision making under stress). The goal of the programme, sponsored by the Office of Naval Research, was to develop training, simulation, decision support and display principles that would help to mitigate the impact of stress on decision making. The volume outlines the overall background, research approach and paradigm employed by TADMUS, with specific focus on research regarding how to train decision making at the individual and team levels - especially how to provide training that will prepare individuals to operate in complex team environments. The chapters explore complex, realistic tasks with experienced Navy participants.

We make about 35,000 decisions every day. Most of them are mundane and not significant, but about 70 of those decisions are life-changing and life-altering split-second decisions. What are split-second decisions? They are decisions made when the following factors are involved: time constraint, limited information, and critical consequences. This is also known as the TLC framework. In this book, you will learn: ① Specific strategies to improve and maximize your split-second decision-making ability. ② To manage decision fatigue, which is the decrease in your ability to make optimal decisions as the day progresses, especially if you had to make several mundane decisions throughout the day. ③ The required rules for making split-second decisions- i.e., no decision is a decision. You must decide. If you are an executive, business leader, chief, first responder, or in a leadership role, the framework for split-second decisions is a tool that gives you an advantage in making optimal decisions at the most critical times. When making split-second decisions, you have either been trained or you are guessing. The same is true for your employees and those you lead. They have either been taught and have a clear framework for what and how to respond during these critical times, or they are guessing. Split-second decisions teach extraordinary leaders how to make exceptional decisions and help move good teams to greatness.

The secret to making the right call in an increasingly complex world The decisions we make every day – frequently automatic and incredibly fast – impact every area of our lives. The Little Black Book of Decision Making delves into the cognition behind decision making, guiding you through the different ways your mind approaches various scenarios. You'll learn to notice that decision making is a matter of balance between your rational side and your intuition – the trick is in honing your intuition to steer you down the right path. Pure reasoning cannot provide all of the answers, and relying solely on intuition could prove catastrophic in business. There must be a balance between the two, and the proportions may change with each situation. This book helps you quickly pinpoint the right mix of logic and 'gut feeling,' and use it to find the best possible solution. Balance logic and intuition in your decision making approach Avoid traps set by the mind's inherent bias Understand the cognitive process of decision making Sharpen your professional judgement in any situation Decision making is the primary difference between organisations that lead and those that struggle. The Little Black Book of Decision Making helps you uncover errors in thinking before they become errors in judgement.

"This research effort applied principles of Naturalistic Decision Making to identify the cognitive challenges involved in platoon leader decision making in Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT) building clearing missions. The findings informed the development of classroom, hardcopy, and multimedia training products to support Infantry Officer Basic Course students in MOUT decision making. A Cognitive Task Analysis of the building clearing task entailed a series of in-depth interviews with Army personnel experienced in MOUT. The analysis resulted in a detailed representation of eleven high-level decision requirements associated with the building-clearing task. Cognitive demands related to each requirement -- critical decisions and judgements, sensory cues, other factors, and expert strategies -- are included in the representation. Four products were developed based on the findings of the analysis: sixteen decision-centered training scenarios for MOUT environments; an interactive, multimedia tool (IMPACT) that supports instructors in training MOUT decision making skills; a classroom exercise that supports situation awareness appreciation and understanding; and a guide that provides supplemental information regarding the building clearing task from a platoon leader's perspective."--Stinet.
