As any history student will tell you, all events must be understood within their political and sociological context. Computational Architectures Integrating Neural and Symbolic Processes: A Perspective on the State of the Art focuses on a currently emerging body of research. With the reemergence of neural networks in the 1980s with their emphasis on overcoming some of the limitations of symbolic AI, there is clearly a need to support some form of high-level symbolic processing in connectionist networks. This monograph investigates the trajectory optimization problems of low- and finite-thrust aerospace vehicles and spacecraft using an indirect method based on the Pontryagin maximum principle, providing a methodological basis for the construction of numerical techniques that are superior in versatility and accuracy to direct methods. This book provides a theoretical explanation of the approaches used and also an extensive gallery of the results of practical numerical studies. The problem of boundary value problem convergence has been largely overcome, which has made it possible to practically automate the optimization of trajectories and to achieve a qualitative generalization with a number of fundamentally new results. Examples of practical optimization of branching trajectories of complex dynamics systems with finite and continual sets of branches, in deterministic and stochastic statements, with control constraints and phase constraints of various orders are demonstrated. An emphasis is placed on the consistent application of methods of numerical continuation with respect to a parameter to solve various problems in the flight mechanics of spacecraft with an electric propulsion system (EPS). The problems considered include the optimization of direct interplanetary flights of spacecraft with thrusters having limited power or limited thrust, of interplanetary flights of such spacecraft using gravity assisted maneuvers, of multi-orbit interorbital transfers of spacecraft with limited-thrust EPS. As a result, it was possible to develop a set of numerical continuation methods for solving a wide range of optimization problems for spacecraft trajectories with EPS with improved characteristics in terms of convergence and performance. This monograph also contains a description of many pitfalls in solving a wide range of problems of optimizing the trajectories of aerospace vehicles and recipes for effectively overcoming them.

The first formally elaborated theory of a generative approach to word meaning, The Generative Lexicon lays the foundation for an implemented computational treatment of word meaning that connects explicitly to a compositional semantics. The Generative Lexicon presents a novel and exciting theory of lexical semantics that addresses the problem of the "multiplicity of word meaning"; that is, how we are able to give an infinite number of senses to words with finite means. The first formally elaborated theory of a generative approach to word meaning, it lays the foundation for an implemented computational treatment of word meaning that connects explicitly to a compositional semantics. In contrast to the static view of word meaning (where each word is characterized by a predetermined number of word senses) that imposes a tremendous bottleneck on the performance capability of any natural language processing system, Pustejovsky proposes that the lexicon becomes an active—and central—component in the linguistic description. The essence of his theory is that the lexicon functions generatively, first by providing a rich and expressive vocabulary for characterizing lexical information; then, by developing a framework for manipulating fine-grained distinctions in word descriptions; and finally, by formalizing a set of mechanisms for specialized composition of aspects of such descriptions of words, as they occur in context, extended and novel senses are generated. The subjects covered include semantics of nominals (figure/ground nominals, relational nominals, and other event nominals); the semantics of causation (in particular, how causation is lexicalized in language, including causative/unaccusatives, aspectual predicates, experiencer predicates, and modal causatives); how semantic types constrain syntactic expression (such as the behavior of type shifting and type coercion operations); a formal treatment of event semantics with subevents); and a general treatment of the problem of polysemy. The field of cognitive modeling has progressed beyond modeling cognition in the context of simple laboratory tasks and begun to attack the problem of modeling it in more complex, realistic environments, such as those studied by researchers in the field of human factors. The problems that the cognitive modeling community is tackling focus on modeling certain problems of communication and control that arise when integrating with the external environment factors such as implicit and explicit knowledge, emotion, cognition, and the cognitive system. These problems must be solved in order to produce integrated cognitive models of moderately complex tasks. Architectures of cognition in these tasks focus on the control of a central system, which includes control of the central processor itself, initiation of functional processes, such as visual search and memory retrieval, and harvesting the results of these functional processes. Because the control of the central system is conceptually different from the internal control required by individual functional processes, a complete architecture of cognition must incorporate two types of theories of control: Type 1 theories of the structure, functionality, and operation of the controller, and type 2 theories of the internal control of functional processes, including how and what they communicate to the controller.
