Fluid-aided mass transfer and subsequent mineral re-equilibration are the two defining features of metasomatism and must be present in order for metamorphism to occur. Coupled with igneous and tectonic processes, metasomatism has played a major role in the formation of the Earth’s continental and oceanic crust and lithospheric mantle as well as in their evolution and subsequent stabilization. Metasomatic processes can include ore mineralization, metasomatically induced alteration of oceanic lithosphere, mass transport in and alteration of subducted oceanic crust and overlying mantle wedge, which has subsequent implications regarding mass transport, fluid flow, and volatile storage in the lithospheric mantle overall, as well as both regional and localized crustal metamorphism. Metasomatic alteration of accessory minerals such as zircon or monazite can allow for the dating of metasomatic events as well as give additional information regarding the chemistry of the fluids responsible. Lastly present day movement of fluids in both the lithospheric mantle and deep to mid crust can be observed utilizing geophysical resources such as electrical resistivity and seismic data. Such observations help to further clarify the picture of actual metasomatic processes as inferred from basic petrographic, mineralogical, and geochemical data. The goal of this volume is to bring together a diverse group of geologists, each of whose specialities and long range experience regarding one or more aspects of metasomatism during geologic processes, should allow them to contribute to a series of review chapters, which outline the basis of our current understanding of how metasomatism influences and helps to control both the evolution and stability of the crust and lithospheric mantle.

Microorganisms modify the state of metals through a complex network of interactions in both natural and anthropogenic environments. Metals serve as electron donors and acceptors and act as co-factors for enzymes. Microorganisms influence metal biochemical cycles as they catalyze a wide range of processes that change metal speciation and mobility (including redox transformations, solubilization, precipitation, sorption, and accumulation of metals). Importantly, microbial processes are utilized in a range of biotechnological applications such as bioleaching of base metals from low-grade sulfides, biooxidation of gold concentrates, or applications aimed at crop productivity. Microorganisms can also be used to remove hazardous metal(loid)s (bioremediation) from materials present in and released to the environment (e.g., acid mine drainage). Metal-resistant microbes have mechanisms that prevent cellular damage, which is essential to their survival under high metal concentrations. While many technologies based on metal-microbe interactions have been applied on an industrial scale (examples above), improved and novel biotechnologies are being developed and/or scaled-up (such as metal nanoparticle bioproduction and bioleaching for valorization of electronic and mining wastes).

Reactions at mineral surfaces are central to all geochemical processes. As minerals comprise the rocks of the Earth, the processes occurring at the mineral–aqueous fluid interface control the evolution of the rocks and hence the structure of the crust of the Earth during processes such as metamorphism, metasomatism, and weathering. In recent years focus has been concentrated on mineral surface reactions made possible through the development of advanced analytical methods such as atomic force microscopy (AFM), advanced electron microscopies (SEM and TEM), phase shift interferometry, confocal Raman spectroscopy, and advanced synchrotron-based applications, to enable mineral surfaces to be imaged and analyzed at the nanoscale. Experiments are increasingly complemented by molecular simulations to confirm or predict the results of these studies. This has enabled new and exciting possibilities to elucidate the mechanisms that govern mineral–fluid reactions. In this Special Issue, “Mineral Surface Reactions at the Nanoscale”, we present 12 contributions that highlight the role and importance of mineral surfaces in varying fields of research.
