What can be understood by spatial transformation, how does it manifest itself and what are the characteristics of transformation processes? This Research Report addresses these questions and presents current research projects and approaches from an academic and practical (planning) perspective. A central point of reference is the concept of a "Great Transformation", which stems from an expert report by the German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU). It outlines the profound changes in the economy and society towards sustainability that will become necessary in the future, describing them as a "Great Transformation". Likewise, social upheavals also manifest themselves in space, enabling spatial changes to be understood as spatial transformations. However, on a detailed level it remains unclear what is to be understood by spatial transformation processes and how they manifest themselves. Against the background of this need for (further) research, this Research Report addresses concrete issues in the research and shaping of spatial transformation processes. The aim is to systematise the largely unordered or disordered knowledge of spatial transformation processes and to contribute to a common understanding of the associated concepts, which can form the basis for further research and for the steering of these processes. The articles on the following topics show how spatial and social transformation processes are mutually dependent and what opportunities and challenges inter- and transdisciplinary research designs can offer in this context: Perspectives on transformation processes; Social and settlement structures in change; Regional development and innovation; Transformation processes in the so-called Global South; New challenges for planning, processes and stakeholders; Research on transformation. This book addresses the highly differentiated spatial, social, cultural and demographic structure(s) of Germany, with a particular focus on the reciprocal relations between different levels of spatial development. The historical development of Germany serves as a background in order to provide context for the development of spatially relevant ideas and ideals (whether in relation to politics, landscape, or culture). In this regard, questions of divergence and convergence become highly salient. The book makes the complexity of spatial and social developments in Germany comprehensible. The neopragmatic approach adopted here allows bringing together different theoretical strands while providing a basis for independent regional geographic research at the same time. Beginning with an overview of the physical structures of Germany which provides the material point of departure for the societal development of Germany, key aspects of the German history are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the reciprocal influence between material substrate and notions of landscape. Here, specific ‘German’ trajectories of aesthetic and normative conceptions of landscape become clear. A common theme throughout the book are questions of divergence and of efforts towards convergence, which become evident when considering past and present economic, political, and demographic developments. Efforts to tackle current challenges, such as adapting to climate change and mitigating it, or securing raw materials, also become apparent. The complexity of spatial processes in Germany is illustrated in case study regions dealing with the challenges of structural change in traditional industrial regions (such as the Ruhr area), or e.g. efforts of Berlin to position and find itself as the capital of a unified Germany. Overall, the book shows how theory-driven regional geographic research can make spatiotemporal complexities tangible and comprehensible.

In the face of great challenges, utopian thinking is currently in vogue. The fact that utopias, with their ideas of an idealized target society, are not compatible with the basic features of an Open Society was already pointed out by Karl Popper in his book 'Die Offene Gesellschaft und ihre Feinde' (The Open Society and its Enemies) under the impression of National Socialism and Stalinism. In the present book, further forms of Closed Societies and the principal similarities (and differences) of their construction are examined. This is done by drawing on Ralf Dahrendorf's concept of life chances, in which he deals with the interaction of options and ligatures. The ambivalence of Dahrendorf's understanding of ligatures, since they restrict options on the one hand, but also give them meaning on the other, is resolved by a threefold differentiation: into ethical and moral, internally and externally directed, and explicit and implicit ligatures. While the former are capable of enabling life chances, the latter tend to limit them. Based on this, the authors elaborate on the landscape (side) consequences of various closed societies and how ill-suited they are for dealing with current challenges.

The annual meeting of the ARLs Junges Forum forum for young professionals on 6-8 October 2016 in Leipzig addressed various aspects of the energy transition-when, where, how and why? In presentations and discussion groups, they considered not only technical, legal and planning aspects related to infrastructure expansion and the management and structuring of the energy transition, but also its significance for spatial development. The focus of the annual meeting was selected in view of the current importance of the issue. The transition is a process intended to ensure a safe, environmentally friendly and economically successful future and as such involves a broad spectrum of social, planning and scientific challenges and opportunities that require more in-depth consideration and analysis. The following questions thus provided the starting points for the presentations: What are the key action areas for the implementation of the energy transition? How will the cities and the countryside of the future look? How do the various actors behave and how do they react to different technologies? Where and why do conflicts and competition emerge and how can resistance and acceptance be dealt with? These key questions were the focus of the annual meeting and informed the following themes: How smart is the city of the future? Die Gestalt der heutigen Landschaft wurde in hohem Maße durch menschliche Eingriffe seit dem 19. Jahrhundert geprägt. Veränderungen in der Landwirtschaft, die Industrialisierung sowie staatliche Raumordnungskonzepte beförderten den Wandel der Landnutzung. Die idealtypische Trennung zwischen »zerstörter« und »heiler« Natur führte schließlich auch dazu, dass bestimmte Landschaften, die noch nicht umfassend erschlossen waren, unter Schutz gestellt wurden. Migrationsbewegungen beförderten diesen Landschaftswandel. In Mittel- und Osteuropa überlagerten sich dabei Folgen von Auswanderung und Urbanisierung mit den tiefgreifenden Zäsuren der Zwangsmigrationen während des Zweiten Weltkrieges und unmittelbar danach. Dadurch sowie durch die Strukturpolitik in den Ländern des Staatssozialismus nach 1945 veränderten sich viele Gebiete dieser Region grundlegend. Die Autoren der Publikation untersuchen beispielhaft, in welcher Weise es im östlichen Europa durch Migrationen zu Landschaftsveränderungen kam. Neben staatlichen Landschaftsplanungen im Kontext gesteuerter Migrationen geht es dabei auch um die Rolle der Migranten und ihren Umgang mit Landschaft. Beschlossen wird der Band durch drei Beiträge, in denen Interpretationen und Darstellungsformen von Landschaftswandel in Schulbüchern und auf Lehrpfaden analysiert werden.

Contributors embrace frameworks of co-design and transdisciplinary practice to build communities of practice in response to lived experience in regional contexts. Their work highlights the strategic importance of a regional focus at a time when global connectivity and mobility is increasing and the complexity of ‘wicked’ problems demands more than one approach or solution. Such complex problems require nuanced, and at times ‘bespoke’ methodological approaches to better understand and support not just regional adaptation, resilience and transformation, but to manage all these things at a time when change is everywhere.
