During the first decade after the turn towards democracy and market economy, Hungary's society experienced profound changes that affected its regions, towns, villages and individual places in different ways. This is documented by thirteen essays that analyse related political, legal, institutional, and socio-economic structures and processes in time and space in order to contribute to a further understanding of Hungary's ongoing transformation processes and its current situation as one of the leading candidates for EU membership. The topics include constitutive elements of a modern market economy such as banking, foreign direct investment, entrepreneurship, knowledge resources, the labour market, and the housing market. Further essays explore education and income structures, the poverty situation, post-communist voting behaviour, regional and urban development as well as Hungary's cross-border co-operations. With regard to European integration processes, the role of Budapest within the European city system and Hungary's economic situation within Europe are discussed. Drawing together comprehensive empirical data and a great variety of viewpoints, this collection of essays offers innovative examples of the application of different theoretical approaches to studies of economy and society in general, and transformation studies in particular.

This collection of studies attempts to summarize the major changes in the Hungarian legal system since 1990. The authors realize that a comprehensive overview of the entire legal system of period would go well beyond the scope of this book, and in fact could be too detailed to interrest prospective readers unfamiliar with the topic. Based on this understanding the book focused on each major branch of law separately (constitutional law, administrative law, criminal law, civil law, etc.), while aiming to describe all major aspects of these changes.

This book looks back at the events with the benefit of hindsight. On the example of four years of struggle of the Hungarian government with the deepening crisis, it will show how different factors, those inherited from state socialism and those created during the transition, shaped the environment in which the transformation of enterprises took place. It is argued that this period was not a public finance, financial or industrial crisis, but a result of processes and factors that existed already in state socialism, only they were manifest in different phenomena. Today's problems in the public finance of Hungary show that these forces remain present. The analysis of the period of 1990-1994 shows that as long as the crisis is perceived as a crisis of public finance, it will recur as soon as the belt cannot be tightened any further and the government of the time believes that it can return to 'normality'.
