The most profound change the United States and China have experienced in their relations in the past 30 years is perhaps the onset of an apparent power transition between the two nations. This potentially titanic change was set in motion as a result of China¿s genuine and phenomenal economic development, and its impact on the United States and the U.S.-led international system has been growing steadily. This perceived power transition process will continue to be a defining factor in the U.S.-China relations during the next 30 years. As China¿s economic, political, cultural, and military influences continue to grow globally, what kind of a global power will China become? What kind of a relationship will China develop with the United States? How does the United States maintain its leadership in world affairs and develop a working relationship with China so that China can join hands with the United States to shape the world in constructive ways?

In his epic account of a childs war memories during Idi Amins reign and growing up as a teenager during successive terror regimes, he witnessed political turmoil from violent military battles of clinging on to power which left indelible traumatic scars on the hearts and souls of his generation. The country was ravaged by war until a peasant army stormed the city, ended massacres and restored peace in most of Uganda. But the child then, now a father, is worried deep for his children, for his generation and for a country with politicians and the military that have never known the values of orderly and peaceful transition of political power in 50 years. Aware that the peace makers and defenders are justifiably about to retire. Should we panic? The aging and impoverished peasants angry and frightened of the immense threat of unending poverty reckon that the Government Vision 2040, desirous of modern and prosperous country, is too far away. They hope that the sweet dreams of a better life promised by this President can still be lived earlier in their lifetime during the economic revolution, proposed in this open letter to the President, whom they also debate whether he measures up to the title of The Father of the Nation

Current preoccupations with the 'rise of Asia' attest to the nascent contestation of the very idea of what the pattern of international politics should look like and how it should be practiced. In this respect, the growing reference to a 'shift to the East' in global politics has become a popular shorthand for the nascent 'power transition' in world affairs. This volume offers a detailed conceptual and empirical investigation of the dynamics of power transition in Asia and details the accommodation strategies and coping mechanisms of different small and middle powers in Asia and, importantly, China's responses to these approaches.

Jack Snyder is a leading American international relations scholar with an international reputation for his research on IR theory and US Foreign policy. This book collects many of his most important essays into a single volume. Exploring a liberal realist theory of international politics, the book is arranged around three key subject areas: Anarchy and Its Effects The Challenges of Democratic Consolidation Empire and the Promotion of a Liberal Order With a new introduction to frame the selected essays, this collection examines how developing nations evolve political systems, and fit into a world dominated by liberal-democracies. It looks to the future for the current dominant powers in a changing world of international relations and at the challenges to their leadership. Featuring a new conclusion, developed from the assembled chapters, this is a fascinating and vital collection of scholarship from one of the most influential theorists of his generation. Power and Progress is an invaluable text for students and scholars of international relations, and those interested in the debates on liberalism and realism, and comparative politics.

In 1987 South Korea began a democratic transition after almost three decades of significant economic development under authoritarian rule. Increased civil unrest caused by dissatisfaction resulted in the regime agreeing to constitutional changes in the summer of 1987. By 1992 the first president without a military background was elected and during his tenure a further deepening of democracy took place. These reforms were instrumental in making it possible that in 1997 for the first time in South Korean history an opposition candidate was elected president. This book examines the initial transition and later attempts at consolidating democracy in South Korea, and argues that although significant progress had been made and a power alternation achieved by late 1997, South Korea could not, by the end of that decade (1987-97), be considered a consolidated democracy.

ChinaOCOs Elite Politics provides a new theoretical perspective on elite politics in China and uses this theoretical perspective to explain power transfer from Jiang Zemin to Hu Jintao and political dynamics between different factional groups since the Sixteenth Party Congress of November 2002. It explains the transition in structural terms, presents characteristics of ChinaOCOs political elites, and analyzes the balance of power among formal institutions as well as among factional groups. It also examines political interactions between Jiang Zemin and his cronies on the one side and Hu Jintao and his allies on the other over a number of issues: the epidemic of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS); ideological institutionalization; the politics over economic overheating; Jiang ZeminOCOs complete retirement; and Hu JintaoOCOs power consolidation in both ideological and personnel terms."
