With any significant life change - good or bad - you may find yourself stuck between your familiar, "normal" old world and the unknown, perhaps even frightening new world that awaits. Welcome to the Gap. In the beginning, the Gap is a place where uncertainty, isolation, fear, and self-doubt can stifle, even paralyze, your progress through a transition. Yet in the pages of this life-enhancing book, you'll learn how to transform any transition into an opportunity for enlightenment, self-empowerment, insight, and even inner peace.

The average employee is interrupted every three minutes. Twenty-eight per cent of our day is spent recovering from distractions. The challenge we face is the way we transition between tasks, roles and environments for maximised performance. I refer to these roles, environments and different tasks as 'spaces'. We spend our day transitioning between different spaces. The First Space is the role/environment/task you are in right now; namely, reading this book. The Second Space is the role/environment/task you are transitioning into, for example, you might be about to go into a sales conference, or have your annual performance review or take part in a parent-teacher conference. The Third Space is the transitional space in between the First and Second - and what we do in this transitional space will determine our level of success in the Second space. The Third Space delivers a series of effective tools in a simple, practical way. This framework is easy to slot into your life because it fits into an aspect of your life that you already know about but are not leveraging. The Third Space does not require you to turn your lifestyle upside down, but rather alter something you are already doing. We each go through transitions countless times during the day, so you have ample opportunity to practise and implement the strategies in this book. The Third Space is a practical tool that has the potential to IMMEDIATELY change the quality of your relationships and business performance.

Over the last years, a large body of experimental data have been generated in the attempt to understand consciousness and its neural underpinnings. In this respect, particular interest has been paid to the attempt to distinguish between conscious experience and unconscious states which however may still be considered as mental states (e.g., in virtue of their representational nature). This is of course not without reason. A deep understanding of that which specifically characterizes conscious states, including neural correlates and cognitive functions, may crucially inform the ambition of understanding the relation between experience and the physical world. Nevertheless, the question has historically been challenged by the fact that consciousness is available in the first person only – not to other people, including scientists. Different methodological traditions and choices have led to quite different understandings of how conscious and unconscious states relate, and diverse empirical work has been inspired and guided by various cognitive and neurobiological theories of consciousness. The very diverse viewpoints include such different positions as the idea that unconscious states are associated with the very same functional characteristics as conscious states, and the idea that no informational state that is available for action can be completely unconscious. The Research Topic “Transitions between consciousness and unconsciousness” is therefore devoted to this particular question, how to understand the relation and transition between consciousness and unconsciousness. We hope that the reader will find the collected articles both informative and thought-provoking, and that this Research Topic will stimulate the scientific debate.

This book investigates the theme of global transitions with a cross-regional comparative study of two areas experiencing change over the past three decades: Southeast Asia and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Political transitions in Asia have been the subject of interest in academic and policy-making communities recently as there are encouraging signs of democratization in countries that exhibit elements of authoritarianism. In those countries with relatively open political systems, transitions to democracy have been complete – albeit messy, flawed, and highly contested. In contrast, countries of the MENA region that have been gripped by revolts in recent years find themselves in the midst of chaotic and uncontrollable transitions. Why are there such differences between these regions? What, if anything, can be learned and applied from the transitions in Southeast Asia? These questions are answered here as Asia’s experience is contrasted with the Arab revolts and the struggle of the different countries in the MENA region to fashion a new social contract between states and citizens.
