Τhis book offers a new approach to the theory of change in argument structure and voice morphology. It investigates the diachrony of transitivity, and especially the changes in causative verbs and transitivity alternations, based on data mainly from the Greek and English diachrony (all historical data are transcribed and accompanied by glosses and translations into Modern English). Data from earlier periods provide new information on burning questions in both Historical and Theoretical Linguistics. The study shows that (a) causativisations are the result of reanalysis of intransitive verbs as transitive on the basis of the linguistic cue of Case; (b) the changes in voice morphology do not depend on the derivation and direction of new transitivity alternations. Finally, the study demonstrates that the generalisation that guides the changes in voice demands morphological differentiation of the anticausative from the passive types.

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, University of Cologne (Englisches Seminar), course: Syntactic structures of English, language: English, abstract: The English grammar has many similarities with the grammar of German, since both have their roots in the Germanic languages. Therefore English and German share lexical and structural, but also semantic properties. In order to deepen one's understanding of these properties this paper will deal with differences and similarities of the English and German verb system. Transitivity alternation is based on the syntactic distinction of verbs that are divided into transtive and intransitive verbs. This paper deals with both verb categories, taking into account semantic matters as well. In English and in German a verb can express the way in which an action affects its object, which is part of the so-called ergative model. This model shall be introduced in Chapter 2 with examples of the English language. After the introduction to the usage of ergative verbs a comparison of English and German structures follows in Chapter 3. Mistakes of translation are often due to structural and semantic differences within the ergative model. English and German verbs do not always provide the same variety of possibilities to express an action, therefore it shall be shown in Chapter 3.1 in which language the verb system is more flexible in regards to ergative processes. Chapter 3.2 deals with morphosyntactic differences of German and English within the ergative model. As the German structure shows similarities as well as differences to the English verbs, an attempt is made in Chapter 4 to discover potential semantic distinctions within those German verbs that either differ or resemble the English structure. The aim of this paper is to bring out a comparison of the English and German language that gives an insight into their verb systems in regards to syntactic as well

The Biblical Hebrew Transitivity Alternation In Cognitive Linguistic Perspective written by Stephen M. Coleman and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with Bible categories.

In biblical Hebrew there is a group of verbs which appear in both transitive and intransitive grammatical constructions. However, explanations of this phenomenon, especially regarding the grammatical status of the Object, have been unsatisfactorily vague as evidenced by the inconsistent or ad hoc treatments offered by modern biblical Hebrew grammarians. In recent years, many issues relevant to the biblical Hebrew transitivity alternation have received sustained treatment in the broader linguistic community. The purpose of this monograph by Stephen M. Coleman is to offer an extended treatment of the biblical Hebrew transitivity alternation utilizing the insights of modern linguistics, specifically the theory and methods of Cognitive Grammar and the related (sub)discipline Construction Grammar. The author argues that the biblical Hebrew transitivity alternation is licensed and limited by conceptual factors. Though often translated and interpreted as essentially synonymous expressions, verbs exhibiting the transitivity alternation offer alternate construals of the realities they represent and therefore should be regarded as having different meanings. Even though the application of Cognitive Grammar to the analysis of ancient languages in general, and biblical Hebrew in particular, is an approach that is in many ways still in its infancy, the present study demonstrates its potential to offer new answers to old and seemingly insoluble questions.
