At the turn of the century, New York City's Germans constituted a culturally and politically dynamic community, with a population 600,000 strong. Yet fifty years later, traces of its culture had all but disappeared. What happened? The conventional interpretation has been that, in the face of persecution and repression during World War I, German immigrants quickly gave up their own culture and assimilated into American mainstream life. But in Translating America, Peter Conolly-Smith offers a radically different analysis. He argues that German immigrants became German-Americans not out of fear, but instead through their participation in the emerging forms of pop culture. Drawing from German and English newspapers, editorials, comic strips, silent movies, and popular plays, he reveals that German culture did not disappear overnight, but instead merged with new forms of American popular culture before the outbreak of the war. Vaudeville theaters, D.W. Griffith movies, John Philip Sousa tunes, and even baseball games all contributed to German immigrants' willing transformation into Americans. Translating America focuses on one of the thorniest questions in American history: how do immigrants assimilate into American culture? The conventional interpretation has been that, in the face of persecution and repression during World War I, German immigrants quickly gave up their own culture and assimilated. In Translating America Connolly-Smith offers a significantly different analysis: that German immigrants became German-Americans not out of fear, but instead through their participation in the emerging forms of pop culture. culture did not disappear overnight; rather it merged with new forms of American popular culture. Connolly-Smith posits that the lure and appeal of dance halls, vaudeville, nickelodeons, the films of D.W. Griffith, the music of John Philip Sousa, Cole Porter, and Irving Berlin, and even baseball games all helped German Americans to assimilate and become German-Americans.

This book examines the occurrence of manipulation in the translation of British and American press articles into Polish for Forum. Przegląd Prasy Światowej magazine in the People’s Republic of Poland, under preventive censorship. The existence of source text (ST) manipulation in translation is discovered through comparative analyses of STs and target texts (TTs). The text analyses investigate topics, editorial features, translation techniques, and the presence of Newspeak characteristics. This study shows the existence of methods manipulating the STs within all analytical areas chosen in order to create a positive view of the communist authorities’ activities and promote an optimistic image of the political, economic and social situation in the country. It offers a wide range of theory and practice concerning the specialized language of politics and propaganda, translation theories, strategies and techniques, and represents a good source of knowledge and practice for both novice translators and professionals.

In response to the contemporary crisis of democracy as a way of life, in particular, the anxieties of inclusion, this important new book explores the contemporary significance of American philosophy (the pragmatism and American transcendentalism of Emerson and Thoreau) and tries to present new ways of cultivating political emotions and political citizens. To take up this philosophical-political-educational task, the book introduces Cavell’s idea of philosophy as translation– a broader sense of translation as being internal to the nature of language, and hence to the condition of human being as linguistic being and, hence, as political being. Translation is a lens through which to enhance the possibilities and to elucidate the shifting identities of American philosophy. Through this, a hidden tension within American philosophy, between pragmatism and transcendentalism, is exposed. This study analyzes the social significance of prefaces with reference to Bulgarian editions of American literature published between 1948 and 1998.
