Die Karpaten – jene Bergkette, die sich von Tschechien über die Slowakei, Ungarn, Polen, die Ukraine und Rumänien bis hin nach Serbien erstreckt – sind ein wichtiger geografischer, wirtschaftlicher und kultureller Marker in der zentraleuropäischen Region. Wie ihre größeren Verwandten, die Alpen, sind die Karpaten in den Literaturen der Kulturen, die sie räumlich prägen, präsent. Im Gegensatz zu den Alpen, deren literarische Konstruktionen in etlichen Bänden erforscht wurden, fanden die literarischen Imaginationen der Karpaten wesentlich weniger Aufmerksamkeit. In Anlehnung an W. J. T. Mitchells Sentenz, wonach "Landschaft ein Wechselmedium zwischen Natur und Mensch sei [...]: an sich nicht nützlich, aber Ausdruck einer potenziell unbegrenzte[n] Wertreserve", und auf den vielschichtigen Raumdiskursen nach dem Spatial Turn aufbauend, widmen sich die Themenschwerpunkte der Hefte 1.21 und 2.21 der Spiegelungen der Frage, wie literarische Imaginationen der Karpaten ab dem 18. Jahrhundert zu Projektionsflächen sozialer, historischer und kultureller Werte wurden. Dabei steht das 20. Jahrhundert im Fokus, und es wird ein transnationaler und vergleichender Zugang bevorzugt, der die Karpaten-Konstruktionen auf ihre Funktion in ethnischen und nationalen Identifikationsprozessen befragt. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit kommt den deutschen Minderheiten in der Region zu.

Das Südostdeutsche Kulturwerk (SOKW) wurde Anfang der 1950er-Jahre in München von Kulturschaffenden und Wissenschaftlern errichtet, deren persönliche Wurzeln größtenteils in Südosteuropa liegen. Im Jahr 2021 konnte das IKGS somit an zwei Jahrestage erinnern: an die Gründung seiner Vorgängerinstitution SOKW am 19. März 1951 und die Umwandlung in das bis heute bestehende Institut für deutsche Kultur und Geschichte Südosteuropas (IKGS), 50 Jahre später. Das Heft 1.22 Die Gründung des SOKW präsentiert erste Ergebnisse eines Forschungsprojekts, dessen Gegenstand die Gründungsgeschichte des Instituts in den frühen 1950er-Jahren in ihrem zeithistorischen Kontext ist. Es wird nach den beteiligten Protagonisten gefragt, ihren persönlichen, gesellschaftlichen und politischen Prägungen, ihren Diskursen und Einflüssen. Green activism played a critical role in the downfall of Soviet-style communism in Eastern Europe at the end of the 1980s. After the revolutions, environmentalists were expected to exert influence within the new democracies and to form the bedrock of the new civil societies that were predicted to flourish across the region; the prospect of EU membership provided activist networks with even greater optimism about their political opportunities. Two decades later what has been the impact of political and economic liberalisation on environmental campaigners and policy advocates? Has access to elites increased with democratisation and Europeanization?
