Children are exposed to a significant amount of traumatic experiences in their environments. These events influence the neuro-circuitry and shape expressive behavior. Traumatized children in a school setting may exhibit disruptive and inattentive traits that interfere with the educational process. This study examines the relationship between classroom behavior and traumatic experiences. 129 fourth grade African American students were assessed with the Conner's Teaching Rating Scale Revised (CTRS-R:L). Consenting participants (25 students) completed two self-report trauma screening instruments, the Child Report of Post-traumatic Symptoms (CROPS) and the Lifetime Incidence of Traumatic Events-Student (LITE-S). Analysis was done using a Pearson r correlation. No significant relationship was found between the trauma experiences and classroom behavior. The lack of a significant relationship between the two variables is directly related to the low number of participants. CROPS item analysis indicates significant exposure to adult induced traumatic experiences. Considerations for future research should include mandatory trauma screening for elementary school students.

A variety of studies have been conducted on how trauma, caused by emotional, physical, or verbal abuse, impact children's lives. Many of the studies which involved observations and assessments were done with the preexisting knowledge that these children had been through a traumatic experience. Instead of looking at behavior of known cases, this study's goal is to find out whether or not children's observable behaviors can predict cases of trauma. For example, is acting out or defiance a key sign of trauma or is it part of the typical development for the elementary school-age group? This thesis takes into account three major elements effected by trauma: the brain, behavior, and the learning process. Within this paper, the importance of all three in the case of children and traumatic experiences is explained. Within the research study, behavior is examined by first observing classrooms of nine year-old, elementary school children using certain criteria to predict which of the children might have traumatic backgrounds. Using the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children (TSCC-A) to assess and measure post traumatic stress, the scores of the assessment are compared to the observations, to determine if such correlations can be made between certain behaviors and past traumatic experiences. The purpose of this research is to aid public elementary school staff in understanding how trauma effects children in the classroom and what the results of those effects means for the children's learning processes.

This mixed study focused on collecting qualitative and quantitative data from teachers in grades 4-6 in the format of a questionnaire and various data reports. The outcome obtained from the research problem revolves around 12 research questions. Findings suggest trauma is not a factor in academic achievement and behavior except in the case of Encase 21 mathematics assessments. Results from the questionnaire suggest teachers do see trauma as a factor in academic achievement and behavior. The use of intentional professional development and guidance from the school counselor helped contain student behavior and academic achievement.
