Pulp and paper manufacturing generates large volumes of wastewater that can be toxic to aquatic life. Some foreign research has suggested that anaerobic treatment could be an effective and less costly alternative to conventional pollution control systems for some pulp and paper mills. This note presents information on the selection and operation of a pilot study performed at a pulp and paper mill complex operated by Macmillan Bloedel in Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, which produces 200 tonnes per day of corrugating medium and 100 tonnes per day of exterior hardboard siding. The wastewaters produced in the complex are discharged into the Sturgeon River and although the effluents are treated to remove suspended solids, the mill complex is not equipped with a chemical recovery system.

Pulp and Paper Industry: Emerging Waste Water Treatment Technologies is the first book which comprehensively reviews this topic. Over the past decade, pulp and paper companies have continued to focus on minimizing fresh water use and effluent discharges as part of their move towards sustainable operating practices. Three stages—basic conservation, water reuse and water recycling—provide a systematic approach to water resource management. Implementing these stages requires increased financial investment and better utilization of water resources. The ultimate goal for pulp and paper companies is to have effluent-free factories with no negative environmental impact. The traditional water treatment technologies that are used in paper mills are not able to remove recalcitrant contaminants. Therefore, advanced water treatment technologies are being included in industrial wastewater treatment chains aiming to either improve water biodegradability or its final quality. This book discusses various measures being adopted by the pulp and paper industry to reduce water consumption and treatment techniques to treat wastewater to recover it for reuse. The book also examines the emerging technologies for treatment of effluents and presents examples of full-scale installations. Provides thorough and in-depth coverage of advanced treatment technologies which will benefit the industry personnel, pulp manufacturers, researchers and advanced students Presents new treatment strategies to improve water reuse and fulfill the legislation in force regarding wastewater discharge Presents viable solutions for pulp and paper manufacturers in terms of wastewater treatment Presents examples of full-scale installations to help motivate mill personnel to incorporate new technologies

As the global population grows and many developing countries modernize, the importance of water supply and wastewater treatment becomes a much greater factor in the welfare of nations. Clearly, in today’s world the competition for water resources coupled with the unfortunate commingling of wastewater discharges with freshwater supplies creates additional pressure on treatment systems. Recently, researchers focus on wastewater treatment by difference methods with minimal cost and maximum efficiency. This volume of the Wastewater Engineering: Advanced Wastewater Treatment Systems is a selection of topics related to physical-chemical and biological processes with an emphasis on their industrial applications. It gives an overview of various aspects in wastewater treatments methods including topics such as biological, bioremediation, electrochemical, membrane and physical-chemical applications. Experts in the area of environmental sciences from diverse institutions worldwide have contributed to this book, which should prove to be useful to students, teachers, and researchers in the disciplines of wastewater engineering, chemical engineering, environmental engineering, and biotechnology. We gratefully acknowledge the cooperation and support of all the contributing authors.

Papermill Wastewater Treatment By Microstraining written by Frederick R. Bliss and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1976 with Paper mills categories.

An original treatment system was designed, constructed, and operated for the removal of suspended solids, turbidity, color, and BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) from the wastewaters of two paper mills which produce technical and other fine papers. The treatment process involves coagulation and flocculation followed by microstraining. Space and cost considerations were of paramount importance in selecting this process. It is expected that the techniques used in this operation may have broad applicability to industries under similar space limitations and using similar manufacturing methods.

Pulp and paper mill industries are always associated with the disposal problem of highly contaminated sludge or bio-solids. The development of innovative systems to maximize recovery of useful materials and/or energy in a sustainable way has become necessary. The management of wastes, in particular of industrial waste, in an economically and environmentally acceptable manner is one of the most critical issues facing modern industry, mainly due to the increased difficulties in properly locating disposal works and complying with even more stringent environmental quality requirements imposed by legislation. This book presents a general Introduction on waste management in the pulp and paper industry and contains topics on the generation of waste in pulp and paper mills, waste composition, methods of sludge pre-treatment, processes and technologies for conversion of pulp and paper mill waste into valuable products, waste reduction techniques employed in the pulp and paper Industry worldwide and future trends.
