From the world's leading expert on trust repair, a guide to understanding the most essential foundation of our relationships and communities. When our trust is broken, and when our own trustworthiness is called into question, many of us are left wondering what to do. We barely know how trust works. How could we possibly repair it? Dr. Peter H. Kim, the world’s leading expert in the rapidly growing field of trust repair, has conducted over two decades of groundbreaking research to answer that question. In How Trust Works, he draws on this research and the work of other social scientists to reveal the surprising truths about how relationships are built, how they are broken, and how they are repaired. Dr. Kim’s work shows how we are often more trusting than we think and how easily our trust in others can be distorted. He illustrates these insights with accounts of some of the most striking and well-known trust violations that have occurred in modern times and unveils the crucial secrets behind when and why our attempts to repair trust are effective, and which breaches of confidence are just too deep. How Trust Works transforms our understanding of our deepest bonds, giving us the tools to build strong and supportive relationships on every level. With our families, coworkers, and friends. With the groups, organizations, and institutions that touch our lives. And even with societies and nations.

Nature conservation is often framed as an ecological problem in need of repair. With both material and discursive dimensions, repairing things involves repairing people’s orientation to those things. As such, nature conservation can be understood as a negotiation between different orientations to ecological problems. This publication seeks to understand the negotiation through trust, the analysis of which situates repair in a particular setting. Empirically, the book is structured around an encounter that unfolded over the course of a single day between white commercial farmers and experts belonging to various government departments, universities and an NGO working in a South African nature reserve. By moving through the situation sequence-by-sequence the author captures the relationship between trust and repair vis-à-vis the material forces that structured the situation, and the discursive methods that actors used to repair a degraded ecology.

The word trust is, perhaps, the most important word in leadership, organizational culture, and interpersonal relationships. We go to school to learn to be educators, doctors, mechanics, skilled tradespersons, scientists, and scores of other degreed and non-degreed occupations and skills. It is our hope to be proficient in our fields. Yet, in all those hours of learning, the average employee or leader has probably had little, if any, formal training on how to foster and develop, and/or repair and rebuild trust. That is a dangerous scenario. TRUST! Using Archetypal Language to Repair Broken Trust is a book to equip the reader with skills on using intentional language to create trust between leaders and followers, colleagues or anyone we work with on a day-to-day basis, especially after trust has been dented, diminished, or destroyed. If we care about building a culture of trust, we must destroy our old frameworks and create new paradigms. After reading this book, the reader will have specific strategies and structures to employ in their communications, which is the first step toward restoring trust. Communication is almost always a topic with regard to building and/or restoring trust, but it is often explained in broad terms and redundant platitudes. In this book, we will look at the power of using specific adjectives and/or adverbs in our communication to build and transform trust. The book is a journey to discover word choices based upon the specific word bank we hear in the narratives of those with whom we are looking to foster enjoyable trust. (Hold on, even the words used in this paragraph will determine if you trust the contents of the book to turn the first page.)

Trust is the glue that holds organizations together. More powerful than contracts or authority, trust enables partner companies -- or groups within a company -- to achieve results that exceed the sum of the parts. Without trust, alliances fail. In Trusted Partners, internationally recognized alliance expert Jordan Lewis draws on four decades of advising and managing alliances to show -- for the first time -- how to build and sustain trust between and within organizations. A comprehensive and multifaceted analysis of trust, Trusted Partners shows how to develop, manage, measure, improve, or repair this important dimension of every business relationship. "Trust must be constructed, one step at a time," Lewis maintains. He breaks significant new ground by describing each of these steps -- including how to assemble the elusive interpersonal, leadership, political, organizational, structural, and governance components of trust. Clear in its explanation of what trust entails, Trusted Partners uses dozens of stories and case examples, among them alliances between Canon and Hewlett-Packard, Ford and ABB, and Procter & Gamble and Wal-Mart, all of which achieved market-beating results. Lewis begins by establishing eight conditions for trust and shows how to determine if trust is possible. He then details: * How to build, manage, and repair trust * How to trust difficult customers * How to sell alliances to customers * How to trust a rival * How to build trust between internal groups * How to create a culture of trust * How to build trust in mergers and acquisitions Concluding Trusted Partners is a section entitled "Tools for Trust." This practical, easy-to-use reference guide covers in depth all the key aspects of trust -- from measuring trust and using alliance ethics to sharing know-how and benefits, working with attorneys, and choosing the best alliance structure. At a time when alliances have become a preferred competitive strategy for most companies, and with most alliances ending as failures, management at all levels cannot afford to ignore this powerful book.
