This book is the first collection of multi-disciplinary research on the experience of Italian-Jewish musicians and composers in Fascist Italy. Drawing together seven diverse essays from both established and emerging scholars across a range of fields, this book examines multiple aspects of this neglected period of music history, including the marginalization and expulsion of Jewish musicians and composers from Italian theatres and conservatories after the 1938–39 Race Laws, and their subsequent exile and persecution. Using a variety of critical perspectives and innovative methodological approaches, these essays reconstruct and analyze the impact that the Italian Race Laws and Fascist Italy’s musical relations with Nazi Germany had on the lives and works of Italian Jewish composers from 1933 to 1945. When America began to emerge as a world power at the end of the nineteenth century, Italy was a young nation, recently unified. The technological advances brought about by electricity and the combustion engine were vastly speeding up the capacity of news, ideas, and artefacts to travel internationally. Furthermore, improved literacy and social reforms had produced an Italian working class with increased time, money, and education. At the turn of the century, if Italy's ruling elite continued the tradition of viewing Paris as a model of sophistication and good taste, millions of lowly-educated Italians began to dream of America, and many bought a transatlantic ticket to migrate there. By the 1920s, Italians were encountering America through Hollywood films and, thanks to illustrated magazines, they were mesmerised by the sight of Manhattan's futuristic skyline and by news of American lifestyle. The USA offered a model of modernity which flouted national borders and spoke to all. It could be snubbed, adored, or transformed for one's personal use, but it could not be ignored. Perversely, Italy was by then in the hands of a totalitarian dictatorship, Mussolini's Fascism. What were the effects of the nationalistic policies and campaigns aimed at protecting Italians from this supposedly pernicious foreign influence? What did Mussolini think of America? Why were jazz, American literature, and comics so popular, even as the USA became Italy's political enemy? Tutti sappiamo – o pensiamo di sapere – che cos’è la canzone italiana. Ne parliamo con gli amici guardando Sanremo, la ascoltiamo su Spotify o su vinile, la cantiamo sotto la doccia, la amiamo, la odiamo, o tutt’e due le cose insieme. Ma che cosa rende «italiana» una canzone? «Felicità», siamo tutti d’accordo, suona come una tipica «canzone italiana», al punto che potremmo definirla «all’italiana». E allora «Via con me» di Paolo Conte, coeva eppure lontana miglia e miglia dal successo sanremese di Al Bano e Romina, non lo è? O forse lo è meno, con quello swing americano e quella voce roca?Jacopo Tomatis parte da qui, dal ripensamento delle idee più diffuse sulla canzone italiana («canzone italiana come melodia», «canzone italiana come specchio della nazione», «canzone italiana come colonna sonora del suo tempo»), per scriverne una nuova storia. [Italiano]:L’associazionismo è un fenomeno che ha caratterizzato la storia di Ponticelli dagli ultimi anni dell’Ottocento a oggi. Dalla fine della seconda guerra mondiale, per circa tre decenni, il Partito Comunista Italiano e in genere la Sinistra ebbero un ruolo egemonico nella vita civile di questo quartiere di Napoli di antiche tradizioni contadine e operaie. In tale clima, nel 1974, sorse la Casa del popolo, che divenne luogo-simbolo dei comunisti napoletani e centro di iniziative culturali d’interesse nazionale. Qui si organizzarono convegni, mostre d’arte, laboratori teatrali e didattici diretti da «docenti impegnati», «registi d’avanguardia» e «operatori estetici», cioè da intellettuali solidali con un progetto organico di riforma della vita civile delle periferie geografiche e sociali. La crisi dei partiti della Sinistra ha comportato una progressiva rarefazione delle attività della Casa del Popolo, ma non la fine di quell’impulso che la vide nascere e prosperare, come dimostra il caso dell’Associazione Arci Movie, nata nel 1990 e tuttora impegnata nella diffusione della cultura cinematografica dentro e fuori Ponticelli. In questo libro si rintracciano fatti e persone di questa recente stagione culturale e politica divenuta improvvisamente remota nella memoria collettiva, nell’intenzione di arginarne la disgregazione, che si palesa non casualmente anche nello smarrimento delle sue tracce documentarie./[English]:Associationism is a phenomenon has characterized the history of Ponticelli from the last years of 19th century until today. Since the end of the Second World War, for about three decades, the Italian Communist Party and, generally, the Left had a hegemonic role in the civil life of this Naples district of ancient farming and working-class traditions. In this context, in 1974, the House of People was born, which became the symbolic place of Neapolitan communists and the center of cultural initiatives with national resonance. Conferences, art exhibitions, theatrical and educational workshops were organized and directed by: «committed teachers», «avant-garde directors» and «aesthetic operators», that is, by intellectuals with an organic civil life reform project of the geographical and social suburbs. The crisis of Left Parties has led to a progressive rarefaction of the House of People’s activities, but not to the end of its spirit, as shown by the Arci Movie Association. The association, born in 1990, is still engaged in the diffusion of film culture inside and outside Ponticelli. In this book it is possible to trace facts and people of this recent cultural and political season, which has suddenly faded in the collective memory, with the goal to contain its disintegration also manifested in the loss of documentary tracks

Capolavoro dei neorealismo, Ladri di biciclette è tra le prime testimonianze di come la maggioranza degli intellettuali italiani non abbia avuto il coraggio di rappresentare senza reticenze, con le sue luci e le sue tragiche ombre, il periodo che va dal 25 luglio 1943 alla Liberazione del 25 aprile 1945. Camuffare, distorcere, sorvolare, occultare: queste furono le parole d’ordine. Ladri di biciclette fu tratto da Vittorio De Sica e Cesare Zavattini dall’omonimo romanzo di Luigi Bartolini. Il film racconta nel 1948 la Roma affranta del dopoguerra, che con fatica, come tutta l’Italia, cerca di rinascere. Ma il romanzo narra di un furto avvenuto nel settembre 1944, quando la città, dopo quella nazista, subisce l’occupazione angloamericana. È il biennio della guerra di Mussolini perdura, la guerra che gli italiani non volevano. Il biennio della morte della Patria, della guerra civile, di chi combatte e di chi sta a guardare, dalla casa in collina di Cesare Pavese. Il tempo della sofferenza e dell’ambiguità. Scavare nelle riviste, nei diari, nelle memorie, nella cinematografia dell’epoca, aiuta a comprendere perché sia stato così difficile fare collettivamente i conti con quel passato.
