Over the past two decades, two-phase flow and heat transfer problems associated with two-phase phenomena have been a challenge to many investigators. Two-phase flow applications are found in a wide range of engineering systems, such as nuclear and conventional power plants, evaporators of refrigeration systems and a wide vari ety of evaporative and condensive heat exchangers in the chemical industry. This publication is based on the invited lectures presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on the Advances in Two-Phase Flow and Heat Transfer. The Horkshop was attended by more than 50 leading scientists and practicing engineers who work actively on two-phase flow and heat transfer research and applications in dif ferent sectors (academia, government, industry) of member countries of NATO. Some scientific leaders and experts on the subject matter from the non-NATO countries were also invited. They convened to discuss the state-of-the-art in two-phase flow and heat transfer and formulated recommendations for future research directions. To achieve these goals, invited key papers and a limited number of contributions were presented and discussed. The specific aspects of the subject were treated in depth in the panel sessions, and the unresolved problems identified. Suitable as a practical reference, these volumes incorporate a systematic approach to two-phase flow analysis.

In recent years, the research in the field of thermal hydraulic at a microscale level has been constantly increasing due to the rapid growth of the technology applications that require the transfer of high heat rates in a relatively small space and volume. Such applications spread from compact heat exchangers to cooling systems for computer CPU to micro fluidic devices. Generally, the classical thermal and fluid dynamic theories developed for macro systems are not applicable to fluids in a microscale structure. Investigations on the heat transfer in a capillary are the basis for designing micro- and high-efficiency heat transfer equipment, such as micro heat pipes (MHPs). Two-phase flow Patterns are also greatly affecting the design and prediction of performance of the refrigeration cycle. Properties such as density, heat capacity, viscosity, thermal conductivity, enthalpy, entropy...etc, must be known in order to design the cycle and for dimensioning heat exchangers. One of the major challenges for CO2 refrigeration systems is to improve the performance of heat exchangers. It is worth mentioning that most of these early works on flow boiling of CO2 were performed for large diamete

The heat transfer and analysis on laser beam, evaporator coils, shell-and-tube condenser, two phase flow, nanofluids, complex fluids, and on phase change are significant issues in a design of wide range of industrial processes and devices. The most common class of multiphase flows are two-phase flows. A gas-liquid flow is probably the most important form of multiphase flow, and is found widely in a whole range of industrial applications. These include pipeline systems for the transport of oil-gas mixtures, evaporators, boilers, condensers, submerged combustion systems, sewerage treatment plants, air-conditioning and refrigeration plants, and cryogenic plants. Gas-liquid systems are also important in the meteorology and in other natural phenomena. Flows of solids suspended in gases are important in pneumatic conveying and in pulverized fuel combustion. Fluidized beds may also be regarded as a form of gas-solid flow. Liquid-liquid flows are the flow of oil-water mixtures in pipelines and in liquid-liquid solvent extraction mass transfer systems. The most important application of liquid-solid flow is in the hydraulic conveying of solid materials. Liquid-solid suspensions also occur in crystallization systems, and in hydro-cyclones. Historically, probably the most commonly studied cases of two-phase flow are in large-scale power systems. Coal and gas-fired power stations used very large boilers to produce steam for use in turbines. Two Phase Flow, Phase Change and Numerical Modeling covers mainly numerical modeling of heat transfer, two phase flow, nanofluids, and phase change.
