Op donderdagavond 4 september 1941 schrijft Etty Hillesum in haar dagboek: Ik wil deze eeuw leren kennen, van buiten en van binnen. Ik betast deze eeuw, iedere dag opnieuw, ik tast met m’n vingertoppen langs de contouren van deze tijd. De contouren van haar tijd zou zij tot het bittere einde blijven verkennen. Jopie Vleeschhouwer merkt in zijn verslag over Etty Hillesums vertrek uit kamp Westerbork op 7 september 1943 het volgende daarover op: Maar we gaan verder, terwijl ik dit schrijf gaat alles ook weer verder en zijzelf gaat ook verder en verder naar het Oosten, waar ze eigenlijk zoo graag naartoe wilde. Ze was eigenlijk ook wel een beetje blij geloof ik, dàt ze deze ervaringen nu ging opdoen, dat ze nu ook alles en alles mee moest gaan beleven, wat er voor ons is weggelegd. Het is nu 75 jaar geleden dat Etty Hillesum in het vernietigingskamp Auschwitz-Birkenau omkwam. Op dat ogenblik had zij ervaren wat het Massenschicksal voor haar en haar volk concreet inhield. Wij weten niet wat haar uiteindelijke conclusie was over de contouren van haar tijd en of zij zich tot het laatst toe heeft kunnen vasthouden aan haar diepgewortelde overtuiging te midden van de gruwelen van de Sjoa. Het is eigenlijk ook niet van belang om dit te weten, want de erfenis die zij ons heeft nagelaten, zal door geen enkel totalitair geweld meer kunnen worden weggenomen. Haar woorden zijn nu over de hele wereld bekend. De serie Etty Hillesum Studies is een uitgave van het Etty Hillesum Onderzoekscentrum in Middelburg en staat onder redactie van Klaas A.D. Smelik, Julie Benschop-Plokker, Lotte Bergen, Marja Clement, Meins G.S. Coetsier, Gerrit Van Oord en Jurjen Wiersma.

De titel van het zevende deel van de serie Etty Hillesum Studies verwijst naar de opening van het Etty Hillesum Onderzoekscentrum te Middelburg op 1 oktober 2015. Zo is de stad, waar Etty Hillesum op 15 januari 1914 werd geboren, een knooppunt geworden voor het internationale onderzoek naar haar persoon en nagelaten geschriften. De bundel wordt geopend met de toespraak die de Middelburgse burgemeester bij de opening van het centrum hield, gevolgd door een studie over Hillesums taalgebruik: welke stijlmiddelen wendde zij aan? Haar beperkte mogelijkheden om zich te handhaven in een tijd van vervolging en haar wens om kroniekschrijfster van het kamp Westerbork te worden zijn het onderwerp van twee studies, waarin haar confrontatie met het nationaalsocialisme centraal staat. In een volgende bijdrage wordt een vergelijking getrokken tussen Etty Hillesum en de auteur die haar het meeste heeft geïnspireerd: Rainer Maria Rilke, en in een tweede bijdrage de verschillen tussen haar en de Italiaanse schrijver Primo Levi, als het gaat om hun visie op de Sjoa. Twee artikelen handelen over aspecten van Hillesums geheel eigen vorm van religiositeit en de actualiteit daarvan voor het heden. Het biografische onderzoek naar Etty Hillesum, haar familie en haar omgeving levert steeds nieuwe resultaten op, zoals blijkt uit de bijdrage over Spiers verloofde Hertha Levi en die over de Hillesum stamboom. Ook het onderzoek naar het boek ‘Levenskunst’, waarin Etty Hillesum en Henny Tideman eens gevleugelde woorden hebben opgetekend, wordt voortgezet. Een boekbespreking besluit dit deel, waarin opnieuw zeer verschillende aspecten van het wereldwijde Etty Hillesum onderzoek aan de orde komen.

Significs is one of those (by no means exclusively) sign theoretically relevant movements which arose at the turn of the century. It established a philosophical tradition which, from its very inception, was interlaced with widely varying movements ranging, for example, from Breal's semantics to Carnap's and Neurath's logical empiricism. In this volume, an international group of well-known scholars from various disciplines undertakes a broad re-evaluation of significs and its development which promises also to yield a better knowledge of research approaches in linguistics, semiotics, philosophy, and psychology with which significs was related or vied for acceptance. Contributions deal with Lady Welby's biography and socio-cultural background, the intellectual context of the signific movement at the turn of the century and the relationships between Welby's semiotic and philosophical ideas on the one hand and those of her contemporaries (Breal, Peirce, Schiller, Vailati etc.) and followers (Ogden, Van Eeden, Mannoury etc.) on the other. The theory of signifying (significs), formulated and introduced by Victoria Welby for the first time in 1890s, is at the basis of much of twentieth-century linguistics, as well as in other language and communication sciences such as sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, translation theory and semiotics. Indirectly, the origins of approaches, methods and categories elaborated by analytical philosophy, Wittgenstein himself, Anglo-American speech act theory, and pragmatics are largely found with Victoria Lady Welby. Indeed, it is no exaggeration to say, in addition, that Welby is the "founding mother" of semiotics. Some of Peirce's most innovative writings – for example, those on existential graphs – are effectively letters to Lady Welby. She was an esteemed correspondent of scholars such as Bertrand Russell, Charles K. Ogden, Herbert G. Wells, Ferdinand S. C. Schiller, Michel Bréal, André Lalande, the brothers Henry and William James, and Peirce, as well as Frederik van Eeden, Mary Everst Boole, Ferdinand Tönnies, and Giovanni Vailati. Her writings directly inspired the Signific Movement in the Netherlands, important for psycholinguistics, linguistics and semantics and inaugurated by van Eeden and developed by such authors as Gerrit Mannoury. This volume, containing introductions and commentaries, presents a selection from Welby's published and unpublished writings delineating the whole course of her research through to developments with the Significs Movement in the Netherlands and still other ramifications, contemporary and subsequent to her. A selection of essays by first-generation significians contributing to the Signific Movement in the Netherlands completes the collection, testifying to the progress of significs after Welby and even independently from her. This volume contributes to the reconstruction on both the historical and theoretical levels of an important period in the history of ideas. The aim of the volume is to convey a sense of the theoretical topicality of significs and its developments, especially in semiotics, and in particular its thematization of the question of values and the connection with signs, meaning, and understanding, therefore with human verbal and nonverbal behavior, language and communication.
