Putting on gas masks and learning how to shoot Kalashnikov rifles in grade school made Soviet children fear possible attack by Cold War enemies. But a more prosaic invasion of Colorado beetles in the 1980s turned out to be a far more real threat to Soviet families. Many had to master farming when the state, near its demise, no longer had the finances to pay salaries. One of the last generation of Soviet teenagers who tasted the political restrictions and propaganda, and the benefits and deficits of the communist state, the author recalls her early years in a Soviet school, a Young Pioneer inauguration ceremony, work on a collective farm, her family's plot of land and their fights against invasive insects, and her first breaths of post-Soviet freedom, which brought economic havoc and bitter disappointments, along with new hopes.

Thousands Of Roads written by Maria Savchyn Pyskir and has been published by McFarland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-01-04 with History categories.

Before, during, and after World War II, Maria Savchyn Pyskir served in the Ukrainian Underground resistance. Her dramatic and poignant memoir tells of her recruitment into underground service at age 14, her participation in resistance activities during the War, her bittersweet marriage to revolutionary leader “Orlan,” her struggle against Stalinist forces, and her captures by and escapes from the KGB. In the 1950s when she escaped to the West, she began these memoirs, which were not published in Ukrainian until after the fall of the Soviet Union. Their appearance in Ukrainian caused a sensation, as she remains the only survivor of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) to have told her tale, now offered in English. Pyskir, whose escape came at the cost of her husband, children, and family, recreates in her memoir an astonishing account of her experiences as a Ukrainian partisan, a woman, a wife, a mother, and an outcast from her own land. The book contains maps, many of the author’s own photographs, and a foreword by John A. Armstrong.

"But how do you pack your whole life into two suitcases?"This memoir in letters is an intimate account of an important historical document, about life during and after World War II in the stunning port city of Odessa, Ukraine. That area of the world (Russia, Crimea, Ukraine, Jerusalem...) has been in our news in recent days and remains an enigma. The Circles of Life is a memoir in letters, depicting a vibrant and lyrical collection of essays that capture Aizic's extended family's journey from the horrors of war, through the dirge of Communism, to lives of hope in Israel and America.I will let Author Aizic's eloquent words speak:...Can you imagine the courage and charisma Grandpa Izya and my father Emil had to have to run a business in the 60's behind the Iron Curtain of Communist Odessa'...The freezing apartment at Ostrovidova 97 Street was always filled with eager minds ready to inhale the collective wisdom of the People of six thousand years ago and (my grandfather) Zeida was always happy to share it....For years Zeida led his family and friends through the darkness of Communist Russia, yet he was never permitted to reach the Promised Land...Dor Hamidbar...The flight (to Israel) gave us our first taste of the capitalist lifestyle...instead of water we were served Coca-Cola....Living in America is not that easy of a task because it comes with the huge responsibilities of freedom, the need to choose to either become your own very best self or to become absolutely nothing. That is the price attached to any free society...You see how many stories our family has? Before it is all lost and gone, what choice do I have but to keep writing it all down? So I collected bits from here and there...translated articles and poems and letters from Hebrew and Russian, I put them all in this book. For you.... " I highly recommend this book. The history of the individual is the history of the world. Anna Aizic shows us this as she reveals the tragedy, and secrets of her family as well as the love and humour. She wrote these letters to her children, and I am thankful that she is allowing us to bear witness as well." - Jena C. Life And Death In Revolutionary Ukraine written by Stephen Velychenko and has been published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-15 with History categories.

Between 1917 and 1923, Ukraine experienced an anti-colonial war for national liberation, foreign invasion, socialist revolution, and civil war simultaneously, resulting in almost unimaginable civilian casualties. In Life and Death in Revolutionary Ukraine Stephen Velychenko surveys the plight of civilians, details the socio-economic background to the political events that unfolded during this time, and documents the country’s demographic losses. Focusing specifically on two causes of civilian death, deliberate killing and appalling living conditions, Velychenko outlines prewar improvements in living conditions and describes their decline after 1917. He examines governmental culpability in civilian death and notes that while ideologies and the inability of leaders to control subordinates were undeniably causes of violence, there were other factors at play. Velychenko mines previously unused archival sources to create a picture of the social conditions leading up to and during this catastrophic period, combining this data with stories and reports from memoirs of the period. Readers familiar with the explosion of violence against Jews at this time will find here a compelling framework for understanding the context of that violence.
