Nés et morts pratiquement en même temps, René Daumal (1908-1944) et Daniil Harms (1905-1942) ont vécu simultanément les mêmes moments-clés dans leurs cheminements artistiques et philosophiques. Cet ouvrage évalue des oeuvres de ces deux écrivains si éloignés géographiquement, cadets de deux grands mouvements modernistes du XXe siècle (le surréalisme français et le futurisme russe) et démontre l'évolution organique de l'avant-garde européenne dans les années 1920-1930. En s'appuyant sur une lecture critique de l'image courante d'une avant-garde libératrice, révolutionnaire et athée dans son culte du progrès, l'auteur met en lumière l'existence de cette autre avant-garde, métaphysique et même religieuse, anti-révolutionnaire dans sa résistance au progrès, et finalement, dans un sens plus large, « antimoderne ». La poésie métaphysique, la vision du monde contemporain comme un « contre-monde », le sens de l'absurde et les projets sotériologiques, c'est là l'ensemble des questions abordées dans cet ouvrage. Il met en évidence cette face cachée de l'avant-garde telle que l'expriment ces deux écrivains dans leurs oeuvres respectives, qui continuent aujourd'hui à susciter l'intérêt de leur lointaine postérité au-delà de tous les pessimismes et optimismes du XXe siècle.

The effort to go beyond given knowledge in different domains – artistic, scientific, political, metaphysical – is a characteristic driving force in modernism and the avant-gardes. Since the late 19th century, artists and writers have frequently investigated their medium and its limits, pursued political and religious aims, and explored hitherto unknown physical, social and conceptual spaces, often in ways that combine these forms of critical inquiry into one and provoke further theoretical and methodological innovations. The fifth volume of the EAM series casts light on the history and actuality of investigations, quests and explorations in the European avant-garde and modernism from the late 19th century to the present day. The first volume of the new series “European Avant-Garde and Modernism Studies” focuses on the relation between the avant-garde, modernism and Europe. It combines interdisciplinary and intermedial research on experimental aesthetics and poetics. The Transmutation of Love and Avant-Garde Poetics is a probing examination of how the writing of sexual love undergoes a radical revision by avant-garde poets in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Today, the exploration of love by poets—long a fixture of Western poetic tradition—is thought to be in decline, with love itself understood to be a mere ideological overlay for the more “real” entities of physical sex and desire. In The Transmutation of Love and Avant-Garde Poetics, Jeanne Heuving claims that a key achievement of poetry by Ezra Pound, H.D., Robert Duncan, Kathleen Fraser, Nathaniel Mackey, and others lies significantly in their engagement with the synergistic relations between being in love and writing love. These poets, she argues, have traded the clichéd lover of yore for impersonal or posthuman poetic speakers that sustain the gloire and mystery of love poetry of prior centuries. As Robert Duncan writes, “There is a love in which we are outcast and vagabond from what we are that we call ‘falling in love.’” Heuving claims that this writing of love is defining for avant-garde poetics, identifying how such important discoveries as Pound’s and H.D.’s Imagism, Pound’s Cantos, and Duncan’s “open field poetics” are derived through their changed writing of love. She draws attention to how the prevailing concept of language as material is inadequate to the ways these poets also engage language as a medium—as a conduit—enabling them to address love afresh in a time defined through preoccupations with sexuality. They engage love as immanent and change it through a writing that acts on itself. The Transmutation of Love and Avant-Garde Poetics ascribes the waning of love poetry to its problematic form: a genre in which empowered poetic speakers constitute their speech through the objectification of comparatively disempowered subjects, or beloveds. Refusing this pervasive practice, the poets she highlights reject the delimiting, one-sided tradition of masculine lovers and passive feminine beloveds; instead, they create a more nuanced, dynamic poetics of ecstatic exploration, what Heuving calls “projective love” and “libidinized field poetics,” a formally innovative poetry, in which one perception leads directly to the next and all aspects of a poem are generative of meaning.

Dès 1910 s'observait la remise en cause symbolique de Paris par les nouvelles générations dans de nouveaux centres : Berlin, Munich, Londres, Bruxelles, Cologne, Moscou, New York. Dada, certes né dans les charniers de la guerre, fut plus encore issu de l'histoire de la modernité artistique et littéraire depuis les années 1850. Les avant-gardes furent-el les idéologiquement progressistes ? Les acteurs ne cessèrent de négocier entre les logiques révolutionnaires, leurs ambitions nationales et celle de continuer tant bien que mal à se faire connaître sur la scène internationale. Loin que Paris fût la capitale unique, d'une ville à l'autre, et en particulier à Berlin, Prague, Budapest, Vienne, Moscou, mais aussi à Amsterdam, Bucarest, Zagreb, Barcelone et jusqu'à São Paulo, Mexico et au Japon, apparurent régulièrement de nouveaux groupes décidés à se faire une place dans le courant du modernisme.
