Figure essentielle de la modernité musicale au XXe siècle, son activité de compositeur s'est toujours accompagnée d'une réflexion théorique, qui fut parmi les plus profondes jamais menées sur les forces subjectives et objectives au travail dans la création artistique. Ni simple explication de l'oeuvre, ni justification de positions esthétiques et politiques, les écrits qu'il fit paraître autour de son ouvrage clé Penser la musique aujourd'hui (1963) constituent, par leur densité et leur ampleur, mais aussi par un écart paradoxal qu'ils instaurent avec l'expérience musicale elle-même, une "herméneutique du sujet". Cette subjectivité qui se cherche, se perd et se retrouve dans le labyrinthe de sa pensée de l'art, le présent livre montre son élaboration complexe.
