Die Aufklärung hatte dem mündigen Menschen ein erfülltes Leben in einer vernunfterhellten Wirklichkeit in Aussicht gestellt. Dieses Versprechen erweist sich als Illusion. Die Deutungen in Goethes Roman untergraben einander. In ihnen zerbricht das Zutrauen in die Begreifbarkeit der Welt und des Menschen. Alle Deutungen sind Irreführungen, das gilt schon für den Titel, eine in sich widersprüchliche Gleichnisrede, und auch der Erzähler ist keine unanfechtbare Instanz. Vorgeführt wird die Ohnmacht des deutenden Bewusstseins, das sich selbst das Schicksal bereitet, das es abzuwehren bemüht ist. Der antike Konflikt zwischen Philosophie und Tragödie, der monotheistisch überdeckt war, bricht wieder auf, und die philosophischen Antworten auf die alte (sokratische) Frage, wie man leben soll, erweisen sich als ungenügend, weil sie nur anthropomorphe Projektionen in die Natur eintragen.

The present book presents for the first time a detailed study of selected passages of the most important Georgian translation of a text of Greek philosophy: the translation of Proklos' Elementatio Theologica by the most eminent philosopher of the Georgian middle ages, Ioane Petrizi, who not only translated Proklos' text, but also provided it with an extensive commentary. The book discusses the paragraphs which are also extant in an Arabic translation of the early 9th century. The main scope of the book is to establish the relevance of the Georgian and Arabic translations for the history of the constitution of the text, but it provides also important insights in Petrizi's method of translation and the philosophical significance of his commentary.

The relationship between theology and philosophy in Gregory of Nyssa's thought is a subject of great controversy. This study on one of Gregory's key writings does not however focus on the study of the source material, but discusses instead the philosophical implications of Gregory's ideas. Thus it is possible to place Gregory's principles in a broader context while maintaining the differences with philosophy. In the first part of the work, the Prooemium of the De Vita Moysis is examined. Following the classical rhetorical tradition, Gregory here starts off with the central themes of the entire work. The second part is devoted to the concept of theoria. This is explored through discussions of the eternity of God, "language theory", human striving towards God, and biblical interpretation. In the last chapter these structures of the notion of theoria are further examined in the light of the theophany in the De Vita Moysis.

Arne Grøn’s reading of Søren Kierkegaard’s authorship revolves around existential challenges of human identity. The 35 essays that constitute this book are written over three decades and are characterized by combining careful attention to the augmentative detail of Kierkegaard’s text with a constant focus on issues in contemporary philosophy. Contrary to many approaches to Kierkegaard’s authorship, Grøn does not read Kierkegaard in opposition to Hegel. The work of the Danish thinker is read as a critical development of Hegelian phenomenology with particular attention to existential aspects of human experience. Anxiety and despair are the primary existential phenomena that Kierkegaard examines throughout his authorship, and Grøn uses these negative phenomena to argue for the basically ethical aim of Kierkegaard’s work. In Grøn’s reading, Kierkegaard conceives human selfhood not merely as relational, but also a process of becoming the self that one is through the otherness of self-experience, that is, the body, the world, other people, and God. This book should be of interest to philosophers, theologians, literary studies scholars, and anyone with an interest not only in Kierkegaard, but also in human identity.

Ausgehend von dessen allgemeiner Bildungstheorie zeigt Christian Konig in seinem Werk die Bedeutung von Religion auf, wie sie von Schleiermacher in seinem beruhmt-beruchtigten Erstlingswerk, den Reden, entwickelt wird. Er weist nach, dass Schleiermacher einen kritischen Religionsbegriff vertritt, wonach der Religion eine spezifische Sonderstellung im Ensemble der menschlichen Gemutskrafte zukommt.
