This book consists of fifteen chapters which can be divided into five major themes: (i) Chinese religion, (ii) Chinese attitudes toward religion, (iii) Chinese spirit cults in Malaysia, (iv) the development of local spirit cults, and (v) major festivals celebrated in Malaysia. The first section deals with three Chinese religious traditions in Malaysia, in particular, and other countries like Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand in Southeast Asia, in general. The second section attempts to discuss on Chinese attitudes towards religion, Chinese religious conception and its implication in their social life, and how Confucian ethics have contributed to the economic success of the Chinese in Malaysia. The Third section seeks to examine the various aspects of the Nine Emperor Gods, the Datuk Kong (Malay keramat), and the spread of Malay and Chinese spirit cults to Sabah, East Malaysia. The fourth section deliberates on three major processes of change in the development of spirit cults in Malaysia: the localization of Chinese locality cults, including Tudigong and Dabogong, the Sinicization of the Malay keramat, and the indigenization or desinicization of an aboriginal Datuk Seman in Broga, Selangor. And the last section winds up with the practical aspects of celebrating festivals in Malaysia and other parts of Southeast Asia, with special emphasis on festivals in general in the Chinese calendar, the festival of the Nine Emperor Gods in Southeast Asia, and the socio-psychological aspects of the Nine Emperor Gods Vegetarian Festival in Thailand.

The Logic Of Compressed Modernity written by Chang Kyung-Sup and has been published by Polity this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-05-31 with Social Science categories.

Most theories of modernity are based, explicitly or implicitly, on the development of Western societies since the late medieval period and they generally assume that modernization was a process that took place over several centuries. But these theories are of limited value for understanding the development of societies in Asia and other parts of the world where the process of modernization took place under different circumstances and often in a rapid and highly compressed fashion – not over centuries but in decades. Asian societies have been propelled into modernity too, but theirs is a compressed modernity which displays very different traits. In this important book, Chang Kyung-Sup provides a systematic account of this “compressed modernity” and uses it to analyse the extreme social changes, complexities, and imbalances found in South Korea and other East Asian societies. For Chang, compressed modernity is a civilizational condition in which economic, political, social and cultural changes occur in an extremely condensed manner in respect to both time and space, and in which the dynamic coexistence of mutually disparate historical and social elements leads to the formation of a highly complex and fluid social system. While these changes enabled South Korea to modernize very quickly and achieve high levels of economic growth, they also created a society that is haunted by various developmental and civilizational costs, including endemic generational conflicts, overloaded family responsibilities, exceptionally high levels of suicide and very low levels of fertility. As with other societies that have experienced compressed modernity, the South Korean ‘miracle’ is replete with extreme and contradictory social traits. This original account of the nature and consequences of compressed modernity will be of interest to students and scholars of sociology, politics and development studies, as well as anyone interested in South Korea, Asia and postcolonial societies.

In recent decades, the problem of evil in human affairs has often been explained exclusively in terms of social maladjustment, personal mental disorders, or faulty societal structures. The essays in this volume present a needed interdisciplinary and ecumenical approach to current social problems by exploring the roots of human sinfulness and thereby reopening the discussion of the fall of man. In their preface, the editors observe that ôneither frantic alarm over the worldÆs crises, nor the many prescriptions for their cure, can have much point apart from a clear diagnosis of what is fundamentally wrong with the human condition. In the Judeo-Christian and Islamic traditions at least, no notion has functioned as pivotally and inclusively in pointing to the core of human derangement as has sin. To inquire after the source of sin is, however, to raise the question of original sin, an idea that has in fact always been inseparable from the web of human interrelationships.ö For the specialist and layman, this volume offers a distinctive range of approaches to contemporary moral and social problems, including contributions from Black and feminist points of view.

The Unification Church written by Massimo Introvigne and has been published by Studies in Contemporary Religi this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with Religion categories.

Unificationists believe in "reconciling the internal truth pursued by religion with the external truth pursued by science." They promote anti-Communism, family values, and the teachings of Jesus Christ and the Hebrew prophets. Where they depart from traditional Christianity is in their acceptance of the Divine Principle as a companion to the Bible and in their assertion that founder Rev. Sun Myung Moon is Lord of the Second Advent, that with his wife (together the "True Parents"), Original Sin is conquered through special blessings. Since 1954 Unificationism has evolved toward a more normative approach to worship and lifestyle, if not belief--a point that Italian scholar Massimo Introvigne emphasizes in his balanced overview of the church's history, doctrine, spirituality, missionary activities, and controversies. He notes that in doctrine Unificationism has moved away from mainstream churches toward increased emphasis on contact with the spirit world, numerology, and construction of a modern "Garden of Eden" in Brazil.

Minority Religions And Fraud written by Amanda van Eck Duymaer van Twist and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-22 with Religion categories.

Analysing both fraud and religion as social constructs with different functions and meanings attributed to them, this book raises issues that are central to debates about the limits of religious toleration in diverse societies, and the possible harm (as well as benefits) that religious organisations can visit upon society and individuals. There has already been a lively debate concerning the structural context in which abuse, especially sexual abuse, can be perpetrated within religion. Contributors to the volume proceed from the premise that similar arguments about ways in which structure and power may be conducive to abuse can be made about fraud and deception. Both can contribute to abuse, yet they are often less easily demonstrated and proven, hence less easily prosecuted. With a focus on minority religions, the book offers a comparative overview of the concept of religious fraud by bringing together analyses of different types of fraud or deception (financial, bio-medical, emotional, breach of trust and consent). Contributors examine whether fraud is necessarily intentional (or whether that is in the eye of the beholder); certain structures may be more conducive to fraud; followers willingly participate in it. The volume includes some chapters focused on non-Western beliefs (Juju, Occult Economies, Dharma Lineage), which have travelled to the West and can be found in North American and European metropolitan areas.
