The representation theory of Lie groups plays a central role in both clas sical and recent developments in many parts of mathematics and physics. In August, 1995, the Fifth Workshop on Representation Theory of Lie Groups and its Applications took place at the Universidad Nacional de Cordoba in Argentina. Organized by Joseph Wolf, Nolan Wallach, Roberto Miatello, Juan Tirao, and Jorge Vargas, the workshop offered expository courses on current research, and individual lectures on more specialized topics. The present vol ume reflects the dual character of the workshop. Many of the articles will be accessible to graduate students and others entering the field. Here is a rough outline of the mathematical content. (The editors beg the indulgence of the readers for any lapses in this preface in the high standards of historical and mathematical accuracy that were imposed on the authors of the articles. ) Connections between flag varieties and representation theory for real re ductive groups have been studied for almost fifty years, from the work of Gelfand and Naimark on principal series representations to that of Beilinson and Bernstein on localization. The article of Wolf provides a detailed introduc tion to the analytic side of these developments. He describes the construction of standard tempered representations in terms of square-integrable partially harmonic forms (on certain real group orbits on a flag variety), and outlines the ingredients in the Plancherel formula. Finally, he describes recent work on the complex geometry of real group orbits on partial flag varieties.

If classical Lie groups preserve bilinear vector norms, what Lie groups preserve trilinear, quadrilinear, and higher order invariants? Answering this question from a fresh and original perspective, Predrag Cvitanovic takes the reader on the amazing, four-thousand-diagram journey through the theory of Lie groups. This book is the first to systematically develop, explain, and apply diagrammatic projection operators to construct all semi-simple Lie algebras, both classical and exceptional. The invariant tensors are presented in a somewhat unconventional, but in recent years widely used, "birdtracks" notation inspired by the Feynman diagrams of quantum field theory. Notably, invariant tensor diagrams replace algebraic reasoning in carrying out all group-theoretic computations. The diagrammatic approach is particularly effective in evaluating complicated coefficients and group weights, and revealing symmetries hidden by conventional algebraic or index notations. The book covers most topics needed in applications from this new perspective: permutations, Young projection operators, spinorial representations, Casimir operators, and Dynkin indices. A series of three symposia took place on the topic of trace formulas, each with an accompanying proceedings volume. The present volume is the third and final in this series and focuses on relative trace formulas in relation to special values of L-functions, integral representations, arithmetic cycles, theta correspondence and branching laws. The first volume focused on Arthur’s trace formula, and the second volume focused on methods from algebraic geometry and representation theory. The three proceedings volumes have provided a snapshot of some of the current research, in the hope of stimulating further research on these topics. The collegial format of the symposia allowed a homogeneous set of experts to isolate key difficulties going forward and to collectively assess the feasibility of diverse approaches.

The Langlands Program summarizes those parts of mathematical research belonging to the representation theory of reductive groups and to class field theory. These two topics are connected by the vision that, roughly speaking, the irreducible representations of the general linear group may well serve as parameters for the description of all number fields. In the local case, the base field is a given $p$-adic field $K$ and the extension theory of $K$ is seen as determined by the irreducible representations of the absolute Galois group $G_K$ of $K$. Great progress has been made in establishing correspondence between the supercuspidal representations of $GL(n,K)$ and those irreducible representations of $G_K$ whose degrees divide $n$. Despite these advances, no book or paper has presented the different methods used or even collected known results. This volume contains the proceedings of the conference ``Representation Theory and Number Theory in Connection with the Local Langlands Conjecture,'' held in December 1985 at the University of Augsburg. The program of the conference was divided into two parts: (i) the representation theory of local division algebras and local Galois groups, and the Langlands conjecture in the tame case; and (ii) new results, such as the case $n=p$, the matching theorem, principal orders, tame Deligne representations, classification of representations of $GL(n)$, and the numerical Langlands conjecture. The collection of papers in this volume provides an excellent account of the current state of the local Langlands Program.
