In the last decades of the 17th century, the feast of Christmas in Lutheran Germany underwent a major transformation when theologians and local governments waged an early modern "war on Christmas," discouraging riotous pageants and carnivalesque rituals in favor of more personal and internalized expressions of piety. Christmas rituals, such as the "Heilig Christ" plays and the rocking of the child (Kindelwiegen) were abolished, and Christian devotion focused increasingly on the metaphor of a birth of Christ in the human heart. John Sebastian Bach's Christmas Oratorio, composed in 1734, both reflects this new piety and conveys the composer's experience living through this tumult during his own childhood and early career. Markus Rathey's book is the first thorough study of this popular masterpiece in English. While giving a comprehensive overview of the Christmas Oratorio as a whole, the book focuses on two themes in particular: the cultural and theological understanding of Christmas in Bach's time and the compositional process that led Bach from the earliest concepts to the completed piece. The cultural and religious context of the oratorio provides the backdrop for Rathey's detailed analysis of the composition, in which he explores Bach's compositional practices, for example, his reuse and parodies of movements that had originally been composed for secular cantatas. The book analyzes Bach's original score and sheds new light on the way Bach wrote the piece, how he shaped musical themes, and how he revised his initial ideas into the final composition.

Manuscript albums are oftentimes contradictory objects: ephemeral yet monumental, coherent yet inviting change. Collecting items made by others, owners form their albums as representations of their selves, their worlds, and their traditions. The volume's contributors - who come from musicology, European history, English literary studies, and Islamic art history - explore a set of these challenging manuscripts while addressing questions of manuscript studies through their respective disciplinary lenses. The albums under investigation range from Early Modern Stammbücher, or alba amicorum, to albums assembled jointly by nineteenth-century cultural elites, and from muraqqaʿs of the Persianate world to English and North American friendship albums, including some kept by women. This book is the first contribution to the comparative study of manuscript albums, focusing on their materiality and analysing the practices of all those involved in making and using them. Moreover, the collection introduces this hard-to-grasp type of written artefact to the field of cross-disciplinary manuscript studies and suggests albums as a touchstone for manuscriptological theories and terminologies.

Das 23. Baltische Seminar der Carl-Schirren-Gesellschaft e.V., das 2011 im Brömsehaus zu Lüneburg stattfand, war dem hochinteressanten "Thema Musik im Baltikum" gewidmet. Der hier vorgelegte Tagungsband gibt Einblicke in musikwissenschaftliche Forschungen in Estland, Lettland und Deutschland, die in weitgespannter Vielseitigkeit zeitlich und räumlich ausgreifen. Die Themenvielfalt macht erkennbar, daß die Musik und ihre Geschichte immer auch einen reichen Fundus für einen interdiziplinären Dialog bieten - auch dazu will dieser Tagungsband auffordern. Zeitlich war die Thematik der Tagung dem 19. und 20. Jahrhundert gewidmet, den beiden Jahrhunderten mit ihren großen, mehrfachen weltpolitischen Veränderungen, die sich auch in der Musik und ihrer Geschichte niedergeschlagen haben. Ebenso wurden Aspekte der verschiedenen kulturellen Bedingungen in ihren gegebenen Verhältnissen und in deren Wandel angesprochen. Die stilistischen Entwicklungen der Musik selbst sind angesprochen, aber auch ihre identitären Bestimmungen aufgezeigt. Mit Ausblicken in die Gegenwart wurde die Thematik der Tagung bereichert.

The lute played a central role in the rich musical culture of the seventeenth-century ‘Golden Age’ of the Dutch Republic. Like the piano in the nineteenth century, the lute was not just a popular instrument for solo music making, but was also used widely in ensembles and to accompany singers. Though mainly an instrument of the social elite and the aristocracy, it was also played by the numerous and prosperous burgher class. The first part of the book deals with psalm settings for the lute; the way professional lutenists coped with the harsh rules of the free market; Leiden as a veritable international lute centre; and the different types of lutes that can be reconstructed on the basis of the Dutch paintings of the period. The second part of the book is dedicated to Constantijn Huygens (1596–1687), the well-known poet and statesman, and avid player of, and composer for, the lute. The third and final section deals with Dutch sources of lute music, printed as well as those in manuscript. Taken together, this volume provides a broad and many-layered overview of the lute in the seventeenth century. Collectively, the articles will further the reader’s understanding of the lute in its social and cultural context, not only in the Netherlands, but also on the wider European canvas.

Der 26-jährige Julius Otto Grimm lernte 1853 in Leipzig den 20-jährigen Johannes Brahms kennen. Es entwickelte sich eine intensive, langjährige Künstlerfreundschaft. Beide halfen Clara Schumann in ihren schweren Düsseldorfer Tagen und besuchten den schwerkranken Robert Schumann. Grimm entwickelte seit 1860 als Musikdirektor Münster zu einer von zahlreichen Spitzenkräften gerne besuchten Musikstadt. Brahms und Clara Schumann konzertierten hier mehrmals. Grimm starb 1903 hochverehrt nach über 40-jähriger Amtszeit. Münster stiftete ihm als einzigem ehemaligem Musikdirektor ein noch existierendes Denkmal.
