Annotation. divBritish Methodism is reshaping itself. At a time of uncertainty about the future, owing to declining numbers and an ever-closer relationship with the Church of England, a collection of the liveliest theological minds in contemporary Methodism have written a book which shows how recent theology can be a resource for the future. Methodism has always had an active concern with both evangelism and social welfare and by means of its central organization it is able to coordinate efforts in these areas. The book asks challenging questions about how this may develop in the complex post-modern secular world.

Unmasking Racism written by Ernest S. Lyght and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-05-23 with categories.

Unmasking Racism offers an experientially based, multi-generational, interdisciplinary, contextually diverse, and inclusive take on racism from a socio-historical, ecclesial, and theological perspective. The constructive arm of the project explores what it would mean to consider "love" as a strategic commitment to exposing systemic racism at every level of Christian faith and practice: the church, the community, and the academy. Our text offers action items within each chapter to help readers (whether scholars, clergy, or laypersons) to visualize next steps within their respective contexts. For the writers, each chapter is foregrounded in reflections from their own individual and collective experiences wrestling with the sin of racism within various ministerial contexts. The aim of this book is to invite readers to take a step with the writers, a step toward adopting a set of actions or series of processes unmasking racism. This book invites its readers to explore what it would mean for persons of faith to consider love as a commitment to justice, a commitment to understand the experiences of those disempowered by systemic racism and how we can fulfill this commitment by exposing racism at every level of Christian faith and practice in society. This book project emerged out of a covenant group reading of the late Dr. James H. Cone's Said I Wasn't Gonna Tell Nobody: The Making of a Black Theologian, published by Orbis, in which he shares the formative life experiences in which "black theology found him" and went on to shape his scholarly commitments. Cone's text is a unifying theme for the text.

Just Us Or Justice written by Dr. F. Douglas Powe JR. and has been published by Abingdon Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-06-01 with Religion categories.

Wesleyan theology and African American theology have both become fixtures on the theological landscape in recent years. While developing along parallel tracks both perspectives make claims concerning justice issues such as racism and sexism. Both, however, perceive justice from a particular vantage that focuses on just-us (just our community). Hence African American theology has not seriously studied John Wesley's stance against slavery or his work with the disenfranchised. And Wesleyan theologians have largely ignored the insights of African American theology especially in regard to certain injustices. To get beyond the "just-us" mentality, the author lays the foundation for a Pan-Methodist theology, which will draw from the strengths of African American and Wesley theologies.

United Methodist Doctrine written by Scott J. Jones and has been published by Abingdon Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002 with Religion categories.

Throughout this book, Scott J. Jones insists that for United Methodists the ultimate goal of doctrine is holiness. Importantly, he clarifies the nature and the specific claims of "official" United Methodist doctrine in a way that moves beyond the current tendency to assume the only alternatives are a rigid dogmatism or an unfettered theological pluralism. In classic Wesleyan form, Jones' driving concern is with recovering the vital role of forming believers in the "mind of Christ, " so that they might live more faithfully in their many settings in our world.

Methodist Heritage And Identity written by Brian E. Beck and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-08-23 with Religion categories.

Brian Beck has had a long and distinguished career in Methodist studies, having additionally served as President of the UK Methodist Conference and helped lead the international Oxford Institute of Methodist Theological Studies. This book is the first time that Beck’s seminal work on Methodism has been gathered together. It includes eighteen essays from the last twenty-five years, covering many different aspects of Methodist thought and practice. This collection is divided into two main sections. Part I covers Methodism’s heritage and its implications, while Part II discusses wider issues of Methodism’s identity. The chapters themselves examine the work of key figures, such as John Wesley and J. E. Rattenbury, as well as past and present forms of Methodist thought and practice. As such, this book is important reading for any scholar of Methodism as well as students and academics of religious studies and theology more generally.

The thoughts and beliefs of John Wesley and the Early Methodist traditions are frequently related to recent progressive tendencies in theology. There are numerous parallels between contemporary interests in people at the margins and Wesley's concern for poor people and his commitments to the sick and imprisoned. In this volume, contributors from diverse backgrounds in the United States and around the globe reflect on radical and liberation traditions in Methodism in their own context. In conversation with contemporary Methodism and the Wesleyan heritage, each chapter focuses on the question of how radical and liberation traditions provide new visions for the present and future of the church.
