This anthology constitutes an important contribution to the interdisciplinary debate on poverty measurement and alleviation. Absolute and relative poverty—both within and across state boundaries—are standardly measured and evaluated in monetary terms. However, poverty researchers have highlighted the shortfalls of one-dimensional monetary metrics. A new consensus is emerging that effectively addressing poverty requires a nuanced understanding of poverty as a relational phenomenon involving deprivations in multiple dimensions, including health, standard of living, education and political participation. This volume advances the debate on poverty by providing a forum for philosophers and empirical researchers. It combines philosophically sound analysis and genuinely global research on poverty's social embeddedness. Ich möchte die Publikation dieser Arbeit, die im Sommer 1991 am Fachbereich Gesellschaftswissenschaften und Philosophie der Philipps Universität Marburg als Dissertation angenommen wurde, zum Anlaß nehmen, einigen Personen und Institutionen zu danken, die mich in den letzten Jahren unterstützt und gefördert, mit mir diskutiert und meine Manuskripte gelesen, mich auf Literatur aufmerksam gemacht, mich in Motivationstiefs ermutigt und bei allzu großen Höhenflügen auf den Bo den der Tatsachen zurückgeholt haben. This introductory book provides an insight into sociological life course research and informs about its theoretical assumptions, analytical concepts and main results. Sociological life course research - like biographical research - has developed into an independent and fruitful field of research since the end of the 1960s. It is true that half a century earlier, in their famous study of "The Polish Peasant in Europe and America" (1918-20), Thomas and Znaniecki had already used life records to examine the connection between social change, social structures, and the life histories of individuals. However, such a research perspective was supplanted by other methodological-conceptual approaches to empirical social research for over fifty years. It was not until the 1960s that sociological interest in life course and biographical theoretical issues reawakened. Today, life course research is considered one of the most important conceptual innovations in sociology in recent decades. "Pursuing happiness is not only idealistic, it is the world's best and perhaps only hope to avoid global catastrophe" (Global Happiness Policy Report 2018). With that, the report argues for happiness as overarching policy goal. This volume argues that parental well-being is well qualified to assume a central role for governments of industrially advanced nations that are in need of coping with the challenges of low fertility and societal aging. More than 4000 mothers and fathers of young children in Germany and Japan have been surveyed in regard to their well-being and satisfaction with many aspects related to their work and family lives. The volume brings together 13 scholars to analyze this unique dataset. The chapters fall into three main parts: (1) parenting and childcare, (2) self, social relatedness, and social structures, and (3) family policy well-being. A particular focus lies on the well-being of mothers in contrast to fathers. The volume uses a multidimensional concept of parental well-being, with each chapter highlighting one dimension, ranging from health, education, employment, and family policy satisfaction to partnership, social network, and childcare satisfaction. National differences are in several aspects superseded by gender, class, and personality types.

This dissertation explores the values and practices of young, middle-class South Koreans and what it means for them to live a good life. Based on 12 months of ethnographic fieldwork, it attends to the pathways and life trajectories of young adults living, studying and working in Seoul, the country’s economic, political, cultural and educational centre. Due to changing economic conditions, it appears to be increasingly difficult for young people today to reproduce middle-class status. In public discourse, these difficulties are expressed in the terms ‘Spec’ or ‘Give-up Generation’. At the same time, young people are starting to question middle-class lifestyles and values and turn to practices which emphasise different standards. The author illustrates how young adults negotiate middle-class ideals by contextualising the values around four key themes – education, marriage, consumption, and work. In doing so, she explores her interlocutors’ thoughts and reflections about middle-class values through a theoretical and methodological framework centred on ordinary ethics and the everyday use of money. This ethnography sheds light on the complex and heterogenous ways young people in South Korea conceptualise and realise the good in their lives, and it focuses attention on the explicitness of ethics and the relationship between money and values in these young Seoulites’ everyday lives and social relations.

Unter dem Leitbegriff „Governance von Arbeit“ analysieren die AutorInnen Veränderungen und Kontinuitäten in Bezug auf die Gestaltung von Arbeitsbedingungen und Karriereentwicklung, Entlohnung und Interessenvertretung, wie auch Institutionen der Reproduktion (Berufsbildung, Familie) in Deutschland. Übergreifende These ist, dass sich alte und neue Institutionen im Sinne veränderter Komplementaritäten verbinden und sowohl individuelle als auch kollektive Akteure veranlassen, z.T. neue, eigene Bewältigungs- und Entlastungsstrategien zu entwickeln. Die sozialen Folgen dieser Entwicklung werden als „bipolare Heterogenisierung“ skizziert, d.h. dass jenseits des traditionellen Kerns, der nach wie vor durch Normalarbeitsverhältnis, Normalbiographie und Normalfamilie geprägt ist, eine zunehmende Polarisierung der Arbeits- und Lebensbedingungen in Richtung Privilegierung und Prekarisierung zu erkennen ist.
