Debye screening of inter-quark potentials leading to suppression of heavy quarkonia has long been a studied signature of the onset of partonic deconfinement. We report on the production of [Upsilon](1S+2S+3S) mesons at [squareroot]s(NN) = 200 GeV in p + p, d + Au, and Au + Au collisions as measured by the Solenoidal Tracker At RHIC. We compare our measured yield in p + p collisions to those in d + Au and Au + Au collisions to obtain nuclear modification factors and quantify suppression effects from both hot and cold nuclear matter. We separate our Au + Au measurements into three centrality classes. We obtain a nu- clear modification factor for [Upsilon](1S+2S+3S) in the rapidity range [vertical line]y[vertical line]

Measurements of bottomonium production in heavy-ion and p+p collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) are presented. The inclusive yield of the three [Upsilon] states, [Upsilon](1S + 2S + 3S), was measured in the PHENIX experiment via electron-positron decay pairs at midrapidity for Au+Au and p+p collisions at \(\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=200\) GeV. The [Upsilon](1S + 2S + 3S) 2!ee− differential cross section at midrapidity was found to be Beed[sigma]/dy = 108 ± 38 (stat) ± 15 (syst) ± 11 (luminosity) pb in p+p collisions. The nuclear modification factor in the 30% most central Au+Au collisions indicates a suppression of the total [Upsilon] state yield relative to the extrapolation from p+p collision data. Thus, the suppression is consistent with measurements at higher energies by the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider.

We report measurements of [Upsilon] meson production in p + p, d + Au, and Au+Au collisions using the STAR detector at RHIC. We compare the [Upsilon] yield to the measured cross section in p + p collisions in order to quantify any modifications of the yield in cold nuclear matter using d + Au data and in hot nuclear matter using Au+Au data separated into three centrality classes. Our p + p measurement is based on three times the statistics of our previous result. We obtain a nuclear modification factor for Upsilon (1S + 2S + 3S) in the rapidity range.

The production yields of Upsilon(1S), Upsilon(2S), and Upsilon(3S) quarkonium states are measured through their decays into muon pairs in the CMS detector, in PbPb and pp collisions at the centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 2.76 TeV. The data correspond to integrated luminosities of 166 inverse microbarns and 5.4 inverse picobarns for PbPb and pp collisions, respectively. Differential production cross sections are reported as functions of Upsilon rapidity $y$ up to 2.4, and transverse momentum pt up to 20 GeV/c. A strong centrality-dependent suppression is observed in PbPb relative to pp collisions, by factors of up to ~2 and 8, for the Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(2S) states, respectively. No significant dependence of this suppression is observed as a function of y or pt. The Upsilon(3S) state is not observed in PbPb collisions, which corresponds to a suppression for the centrality-integrated data by at least a factor of ~7 at a 95% confidence level. The observed suppression is in agreement with theoretical scenarios modeling the sequential melting of quarkonium states in a quark gluon plasma.

The relative yields of [upsilon] mesons produced in p + p and Pb+Pb collisions at [square root] s[subscript NN] = 5.02 TeV and reconstructed via the dimuon decay channel are measured using data collected by the CMS experiment. Double ratios are formed by comparing the yields of the excited states, [upsilon](2S) and [upsilon](3S), to the ground state, [upsilon](1S), in both Pb+Pb and p + p collisions at the same energy. The double ratios, [[upsilon](nS)/[upsilon](1S)][subscript PbPb] /[[upsilon](nS)/[upsilon](1S)][subscript pp] ,are measured to be 0.308 ± 0.055 (stat) ± 0.019 (syst) for the [upsilon](2S) and less than 0.26 at 95% confidence level for the [upsilon](3S). The double ratios are studied as a function of collision centrality, as well as dimuon transverse momentum, and rapidity. As a function ofcollision centrality the [upsilon](2S) double ratio is consistent with unity in the most peripheral (70–100%) bin and is consistent with zero in the most central (0–5%) bin. The [upsilon](2S) double ratio is consistent with a constant dependence on the kinematic variables, with a large suppression seen throughout the studied kinematic range. No significant [upsilon](3S) signal is found in the Pb+Pb data. The [upsilon](3S) double ratio is consistently below unity for all bins, including the most peripheral (50–100%) bin, indicating a strong suppression of the [upsilon](3S) relative to the [upsilon](1S).

Quarkonia suppression, caused by the Debye screening of the Quantum Chromo-Dynamic (QCD) potential between the two heavy quarks, was originally claimed to be an unambiguous signal of the formation of a Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). J/[psi] supression has been observed in heavy ion collisions at both SPS and RHIC, however, the magnitude of the suppression in both systems was similar despite the differing energy densities. This indicates that Quarkonia suppression isn't as unambiguous a signal as previously supposed because there are many competing processes that affect the yield of quarkonia in heavy ion collisions. Some of these effects enhance the quarkonia yield, such as the statistical recombination of the QQ̄ pairs, while others reduce it, such as co-mover absorption. These processes affect the Upsilon family less than the J/[psi] family at 200 GeV, and it is believed that color screening should be the dominant process that contributes to any observed supression of the [Upsilon]. A measurement of bottomonia spectra in heavy ion collisions with sufficient statistics and resolution should be able to constrain the various models of the QGP. In order to measure the suppression of the [Upsilon], it was necessary to measure the cross section of the bottomonia sates in p+p. This was measured to be 114 ± 38 (stat. + fit) +23/-24 (sys.) pb. The same trigger algorithm and experimental procecures developed for this measurement were applied to the Au+Au measurement, with the exception of a slight increase in trigger thresholds. This algorithm was applied to 4 Million triggered events taken during run 7 (2007) and combined with the p+p cross section, an R[subscript AA](0-60%) of 0.80 ± 0.34 (stat.) was calculated. The mass resolution was improved with the removal of the SVT and its support structure from the center of STAR. A modified trigger algorithm was applied to 50 Millions triggers taken during run 10 (2010) and this yield an R[subscript AA](0-60%) of 0.55 ± 0.23 (stat.) +0.07/-0.13 (sys.) when combined with the p+p cross section.

This thesis presents the first J/psi production analysis of Au+Au reactions at forward rapidity at [square root]sNN = 200 GeV. In the second year of RHIC running, design energy was achieved in the collisions of both Au+Au ions and proton+proton reactions. The production of the J/psi is measured by the PHENIX experiment in Au+Au collisions as well as in proton-proton collisions. The scientific goal is to investigate the nature of hot, dense nuclear matter capitalizing on the unique properties of the J/psi as a probe of this matter. Recent experimental results by the NA50 collaboration at CERN strongly deviate from the conventional picture that successfully describes data at lower energies. The importance of such a measurement is demonstrated by the wide spectrum of theoretical explanations concerning the existing data. The merits of these models will be explored in a systematic and comprehensive study of the J/psi and open charm in collisions of a variety of species and energy. A survey of the theoretical models is presented and the relevant open charm and J/psi PHENIX measurements are compared.

Inclusive transverse momentum spectra of photons and[pi][sup 0]s at mid-rapidity are studied as a function of collision centrality for[sup 197]Au+[sup 197]Au collisions at[radical]s[sub NN]= 130 GeV. Photon pair conversions have been reconstructed from charged tracks measured by the main Time Project Chamber of the STAR experiment at the RHIC heavy ion facility. The transverse momentum resolution of photons with this method is estimated to be[Delta]p[sub t]/p[sub t]= 2% at 0.125 GeV/c and 5% at 2.5 GeV/c. Photon spectra were measured up to a transverse momentum of 2.4 GeV/c between[+-] 0.5 units of rapidity. The dominant photon production mechanism, the[pi][sup 0][yields][gamma][gamma] decay, was measured between 0.25-2.5 GeV/c and[+-] 1 units of rapidity. Spectra are reported for the top 11%, 11-34% and 34-85% centrality classes. It was observed that in mid-central and central collisions the relative contribution of the[pi][sup 0][yields][gamma][gamma] decay to the inclusive photon spectrum decreases above a transverse momentum of 1.65 GeV/c. In central collisions the magnitude of the decrease from p[sub t]= 1.65 GeV/c to 2.4 GeV/c is 20%. It is unlikely that contributions from other[pi][sup 0] decay channels and other particle decays fully explain this decrease. The centrality dependence on the shapes of the[pi][sup 0] spectra was analyzed with Boltmann and Bose-Einstein functions. In the transverse momentum windows of the spectra, the extracted temperatures are near 0.295 GeV. These temperatures are substantially higher than those extracted from[pi][sup[+-]] spectra in a lower range of transverse momentum. This is an indication that the shapes of the pion spectra deviate from purely exponential shapes.
