This book collects stories and images of Dar es Salaam and Berlin that explore the theme of urban heritage from below. Based on interviews with local people in both cities, the stories were collaboratively written, exchanged and edited during two joint summer schools held at Ardhi University in Dar es Salaam and the Technical University Berlin in 2016. While some of the stories may seem naive or even banal at first glance, in aggregate they produce rich portraits of urban life and raise political questions about the right to the city and its histories as well as foregrounding shared themes such as migration, land ownership and urban development. We hope the parallels and contradictions, similarities and differences contained in the narratives will provoke a new perspective on how to define urban heritage. Only through extended dialogues about the pasts, presents and futures of these and other cities, can we construct a broad people-centred definition of cultural values of cities beyond formalistic or bureaucratic approaches: a definition that includes the cultural practices of all citizens as well as an appreciation of specific physical places.

Urban Narratives foregrounds previously silenced voices of young people of color who are labeled disabled. Overrepresented in special education classes, yet underrepresented in educational research, these students - the largest group within segregated special education classes - share their perceptions of the world and their place within it. Eight 'portraits in progress' consisting of their own words and framed by their poetry and drawings, reveal compelling insights about life inside and out of the American urban education system. The book uses an intersectional analysis to examine how power circulates in society throughout and among historical, cultural, institutional, and interpersonal domains, impacting social, academic, and economic opportunities for individuals, and expanding or circumscribing their worlds.

This book examines how urban narratives explore the complexities of city life, including the diversity of its inhabitants, the challenges of urbanization, and the impact of social and economic disparities. They may delve into such topics as crime, poverty, gentrification, and the struggle for identity and belonging in different bustling metropolis settings like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Benaras, Edinburgh and Glasgow. This monograph provides a lens through which authors and storytellers examine and reflect upon the complexities, challenges, and opportunities of urban life. It seeks to reiterate how the discourse of urban narratives refers to the specific language, themes, and ideas that are commonly found in stories set in urban environments, and encompasses the ways in which urban spaces are portrayed, the issues and conflicts that arise within these settings, and the social, cultural, and political commentary that is often embedded in these narratives.

This study is a concise introduction to Bruno Latour's Actor-Network Theory and its application in a literary analysis of urban narratives of the 21st century. We encounter well-known psycho-geographers such as Iain Sinclair and Sam Miller, and renowned authors, Patrick Neate and Suketu Mehta. Prachi More analyses these authors' accounts of vastly different cities such as London, Delhi, Mumbai, Johannesburg, New York and Tokyo. Are these urban narratives a contemporary solution to documenting an ever-evasive urban reality? If so, how do they embody "matters of concern" as Latour would have put it, laying bare modern-day "actors" and "networks" rather than reporting mere "matters of fact"? These questions are drawn into an inter-disciplinary discussion that addresses concerns and questions of epistemology, the sociology of knowledge as well as urban and documentary studies.

This book foregrounds the works of Pier Paolo Pasolini to study the Roman periphery and examine the relevance of Pasolini’s vision in the construction of subaltern identity and experience. It analyses the contemporary Italian society to understand the problem of social exclusion of marginal communities. Narrative studies are at the core of the contemporary social science research. This book uses narrative analysis to unpack the deeper meaning of Rome’s stigmatized periphery through an interplay of Italian cinema, literature, and social and political climates. It encourages a positive interpretation of the Roman periphery through its characterization as a homogeneous area of marginality as emphasized in Pasolini’s writings and films on Rome. This re-evaluation left a lasting impact on the modern periphery and the narratives of ordinary citizens as evident in contemporary street art and popular musical production. Pasolini’s revolutionary vision allows us to appreciate the human and aesthetic character of urban life in regions beyond the main urban areas. The respect for subaltern urban communities encouraged by this book can be extended from Rome to other parts of the world. This book presents an interconnection of social theory, geography, poetry, literature, film and the visual arts to study the experience of life in underprivileged urban areas. Written in an accessible style, the book offers a reimagining of the Roman periphery which will appeal to readers in France, Spain, Italy, Australia, areas which have significant interest in Italian studies and the works of Pasolini.

The Materiality of Literary Narratives in Urban History explores a variety of geographical and cultural contexts to examine what literary texts, grasped as material objects and reflections on urban materialities, have to offer for urban history. The contributing writers’ approach to literary narratives and materialities in urban history is summarised within the conceptualisation ‘materiality in/of literature’: the way in which literary narratives at once refer to the material world and actively partake in the material construction of the world. This book takes a geographically multipolar and multidisciplinary approach to discuss cities in the UK, the US, India, South Africa, Finland, and France whilst examining a wide range of textual genres from the novel to cartoons, advertising copy, architecture and urban planning, and archaeological writing. In the process, attention is drawn to narrative complexities embedded within literary fiction and to the dialogue between narratives and historical change. The Materiality of Literary Narratives in Urban History has three areas of focus: literary fiction as form of urban materiality, literary narratives as social investigations of the material city, and the narrating of silenced material lives as witnessed in various narrative sources.
