This ambitious and vivid study in six volumes explores the journey of a single, electrifying story, from its first incarnation in a medieval French poem through its prolific rebirth in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The Juggler of Notre Dame tells how an entertainer abandons the world to join a monastery, but is suspected of blasphemy after dancing his devotion before a statue of the Madonna in the crypt; he is saved when the statue, delighted by his skill, miraculously comes to life. Jan Ziolkowski tracks the poem from its medieval roots to its rediscovery in late nineteenth-century Paris, before its translation into English in Britain and the United States. The visual influence of the tale on Gothic revivalism and vice versa in America is carefully documented with lavish and inventive illustrations, and Ziolkowski concludes with an examination of the explosion of interest in The Juggler of Notre Dame in the twentieth century and its place in mass culture today. In this concluding volume, Ziolkowski explores the popularity of The Juggler of Notre Dame from the 1930s through the Second World War, especially in the Allied Resistance. Its popularity in the United States was subsequently maintained by figures as diverse as Tony Curtis and W. H. Auden, and although recently the story and medievalism have lost ground, the future of both holds promise. Presented with great clarity and simplicity, Ziolkowski's work is accessible to the general reader, while its many new discoveries will be valuable to academics in such fields and disciplines as medieval studies, medievalism, philology, literary history, art history, folklore, performance studies, and reception studies.

Hans Falladas openhartige herinneringen aan een turbulent leven en de terreur van de nazis stiekem en in minuscuul schrift opgetekend in de gevangenis in 1944 zijn kortgeleden ontcijferd en worden nu voor het eerst in Nederland gepubliceerd. In 1944 belandt Hans Fallada, nadat hij zijn echtgenote met een pistool heeft bedreigd, in de gevangenis. Het lijkt met hem gedaan: een alcoholist, een geestelijk en lichamelijk wrak, een auteur die niet meer tot schrijven in staat is. Maar juist hier, in dit `dodenhuis, omgeven door moordenaars en zedendelinquenten en onder voortdurend toezicht van zijn bewakers, is schrijven zijn redding. Regel na regel schrijft hij zijn haat tegen de nazis en de vernederingen van de afgelopen jaren van zich af. En zet daarmee zijn leven op het spel. Terwijl het in Berlijn bommen regent en huizen in vlammen opgaan, schrijft Hans Fallada in een gevangeniscel in Strelitz een relaas dat hem het leven kan kosten. Openhartig en verstrikt in zijn eigen tegenspraken legt hij getuigenis af van zijn ervaringen in het Derde Rijk, maar ook van de opkomst en neergang van een schrijver. In mijn vreemde land is een unieke combinatie van autobiografie, een sprekend tijdsbeeld en het verslag van iemand die moet schrijven om te overleven. Onder de ogen van zijn bewakers beschrijft Fallada pakkend en aangrijpend zijn meest turbulente jaren, vanaf zijn wereldsucces Wat nu, kleine man? in 1932 tot zijn verblijf in de gevangenis in 1944. En wat heeft die man veel te vertellen over de roaring twenties and brown thirties! Over zijn plotselinge schrijversroem, een leven zonder materiële zorgen, drankorgieën met Hemingway waarbij zelfs de sektglazen werden opgegeten. Over goede en foute vrienden, intriganten en informanten, nazibewonde raars van zijn boeken, over Goebbels pogingen hem om te kopen met privileges, en altijd weer over de hunkeringen naar een gewoon leven, naar rust en het overwinnen van zijn verslavingen en angsten. Als schrijver kon Fallada zich niet voorstellen ergens anders te leven dan in Duitsland. Maar voor het feit dat hij blijft, betaalt hij een hoge prijs. Hij beschrijft meedogenloos het falen en de groeiende wanhoop van een apolitiek man. Juist dit maakt In mijn vreemde land tot Falladas meest persoonlijke boek.
