Für viele Verbraucher zählt der Online-Versandhandel seit Jahren zum Alltag. Allerdings sind die wenigsten Verbraucher in der Lage, gezielt Risiken für einzelne Online-Versanddienste einzuschätzen. Dies gilt insbesondere für den Verbraucher- und Datenschutz. Sie vertrauen bei der Auswahl des Shops ihrem Bauchgefühl oder orientieren sich nur am Preis der Waren. Ob der Online-Versanddienst vertrauenswürdig ist, wissen sie nicht. Ein Mittel, das ihnen hilft, die Vertrauenswürdigkeit jedes Online-Shops bereits während des ersten Besuchs einzuschätzen, existiert noch nicht. Diese Lücke könnte ein Browser-Add-on schließen, das beim Verbraucher installiert wird und ihn dabei unterstützt, Auffälligkeiten im Bereich des Verbraucher- und Datenschutzes zu erkennen und sich daran angepasst zu verhalten. Ein solches Add-on funktioniert unabhängig vom Mitwirken des Anbieters eines Online-Shops oder eines Intermediäres und „begleitet“ den Nutzer beim Online-Einkauf durch das Internet. Das rechtliche Konzept eines solchen – auf den Anforderungen des deutschen Verbraucher- und Datenschutzrechts basierenden – Add-ons wird in diesem Buch beschrieben.

Die Projektgruppe verfassungsverträgliche Technikgestaltung führt interdisziplinäre Forschungsprojekte zu Rechtsfragen der Informations- und Kommunikationstechniken durch, die die Ziele verfolgen, Technik rechtsverträglich zu gestalten und Recht technikadäquat fortzuentwickeln. 1988 als provet e. V. in Darmstadt gegründet, siedelte die Gruppe 1998 an die Universität Kassel um. Seitdem ist provet eine Forschungsgruppe am Lehrstuhl von Prof. Dr. Roßnagel an der Universität Kassel und seit 2005 auch eine Abteilung im Wissenschaftlichen Zentrum für Informationstechnik-Gestaltung (ITeG) der Universität Kassel. Der provet e. V. existiert parallel dazu weiter. Im Mai 2018 trat Prof. Dr. Gerrit Hornung als wissenschaftlicher Leiter hinzu. Dieser Band zeichnet die Entwicklung der Projektgruppe nach und will dabei auch als Impulsgeber für ähnliche Vorhaben an anderen Einrichtungen sein.

This book consists of contributions exploring from different perspectives the 'images' of the consumer in EU law. The images of the consumer form the foundation for various EU policies, more or less directly oriented towards the goal of consumer protection. The purpose of the volume is to establish what visions of the consumer there are in different contexts of EU law, whether they are consistent, and whether EU law's engagement with consumer-related considerations is sincere or merely instrumental to the achievement of other goals. The chapters discuss how consumers should be protected in EU contract, competition, free movement and trade mark law. They reflect on the limits of the consumer empowerment rationale as the basis for EU consumer policy.
