The Weirdness Of Being written by Ivo De Gennaro and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-10-20 with Philosophy categories.

The ongoing publication of Heidegger's complete works has called into question the interpretive and translative practices that have historicized Heidegger's thinking through the adaptation of categories and mind-sets inherited from metaphysics. Ivo De Gennaro argues that the posthumous treatises in particular - many of which have yet to be translated into English - show that the "other onset of thinking" that Being and Time inaugurated and which those historicizing accounts have interpreted and translated away, has already taken place. This book, on the other hand, speaks solely from that other onset, that of being itself. While arguing the "one-pointedness" of Heidegger's entire path of thinking, De Gennaro draws mainly on the posthumous treatises to offer both a provisional exploration of, and an introduction to, a thinking whose sense and implications have barely begun to emerge. This challenging and original interpretation marks an important contribution to Heidegger scholarship.

Academic Freedom In The European Context written by Ivo De Gennaro and has been published by Palgrave Macmillan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-02-27 with Education categories.

This book explores the concept of academic freedom from a European vantage point. Drawing on both philosophical and legal perspectives, the editors and contributors analyse the concept of academic freedom within the present institutional setting. Academic freedom has long been considered a natural part of higher education, but as the world enters the digital age, a renewed understanding of its role and the threats it must face is required. The authors question the purpose of science without freedom, and subsequently the purpose of political communities without free science. Although the book uses European case studies to answer these questions, it undoubtedly has global relevance: what would be left of the present notion of the ‘global world’ were we to conceive of its character without modern science? This book calls for a critical re-examination of the academic community and its own understanding of the sources, conditions and aims of scientific practice.

This book offers a phenomenologically informed reading of some fundamental positions of the philosophical tradition. Its objective is not that of giving an exhaustive account of the thinking of any single philosopher, much less of the trajectory of philosophy as a whole; rather, the aim is to retrace a few key moments in the course of philosophical enquiry, from its outset to its accomplishment in Nietzsche's metaphysics, with a focus on the main motive of that enquiry: the always new attempt to establish a sufficient knowledge of the ultimate principle on which to build a human "ethos".

Numerous volumes have been written on the philosophy of Martin Heidegger, and new translations of his writings appear on a regular basis. Up to now, however, no book has addressed the connections between Heidegger's thought and the hermeneutic methodology involved in translating his works - or any other text. Gathering essays by internationally recognized scholars, this volume examines the specific synergy that holds between Heidegger's thinking and the distinctive endeavor of translation. Heidegger, Translation, and the Task of Thinking: Essays in Honor of Parvis Emad offers scholars and students alike a rare journey into the insights and intricacies of one of the greatest philosophers of the twentieth century. The book also pays homage to Parvis Emad, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at De Paul University, founder of the journal Heidegger Studies and a renowned translator of Heidegger’s writings. Heidegger, Translation, and the Task of Thinking: Essays in Honor of Parvis Emad provides a uniquely focused perspective on Heidegger's thought, and delves into the strategies and controversies that attend all attempts to translate his most complex and challenging texts, including his seminal works Contributions to Philosophy and Mindfulness. Accordingly, this book will be of great interest and benefit to anyone working in the fields of phenomenology, hermeneutics, or Heidegger studies.

Moral Dimension Of Man In The Age Of Computers written by Adam Drozdek and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995 with Philosophy categories.

Reason has very often been seen as the highest faculty of man and, therefore, a strong tendency to attempt to analyze man mainly in terms of the rational dimension exists. This tendency was strong in antiquity and was given renewed attention in the seventeenth century. In recent times, developments and advancements in computer science have given the notion renewed scientific support. In this tradition, man is not only analyzed in terms of rational faculties, but is often reduced to them. The philosophical conclusions drawn from computer science strengthen the view that man's highest faculty is reason. This work argues that this view of man is limited and insufficient because man is primarily a moral being, and the rational dimension is only instrumental in the developing and in exercising what is most important in man: the moral dimension.

Is a whole something more than the sum of its parts? Are there things composed of the same parts? If you divide an object into parts, and divide those parts into smaller parts, will this process ever come to an end? Can something lose parts or gain new ones without ceasing to be the thing it is? Does any multitude of things (including disparate things such as you, this book, and the tail of a cat) compose a whole of some sort? Questions such as these have occupied us for at least as long as philosophy has existed. They define the field that has come to be known as mereology-the study of all relations of part to whole and of part to part within a whole-and have deep and far-reaching ramifications in metaphysics as well as in logic, the foundations of mathematics, the philosophy of language, the philosophy of science, and beyond. In Mereology, A. J. Cotnoir and Achille C. Varzi have compiled decades of advanced research into a comprehensive, up-to-date, and formally rigorous picture. The early chapters cover the more classical aspects of mereology; the rest of the book deals with variants and extensions. Whether you are an established professional philosopher, an interested student, or a newcomer, inside you will find all the tools you need to join this ever-evolving field of inquiry and theorize about all things mereological.

Physiognomy and ekphrasis are two of the most important modes of description in antiquity and represent the necessary precursors of scientific description. The primary way of divining the characteristics and fate of an individual, whether inborn or acquired, was to observe the patient’s external characteristics and behaviour. This volume focuses initially on two types of descriptive literature in Mesopotamia: physiognomic omens and what we might call ekphrastic description. These modalities are traced through ancient India, Ugaritic and the Hebrew Bible, before arriving at the physiognomic features of famous historical figures such as Themistocles, Socrates or Augustus in the Graeco-Roman world, where physiognomic discussions become intertwined with typological analyses of human characters. The Arabic compendial culture absorbed and remade these different physiognomic and ekphrastic traditions, incorporating both Mesopotamian links between physiognomy and medicine and the interest in characterological ‘types’ that had emerged in the Hellenistic period. This volume offer the first wide-ranging picture of these modalities of description in antiquity.
