In Western societies, such as the Netherlands, people with different ethnic backgrounds live together in urban areas. This book examines daily life in multi-ethnic neighbourhoods and the meaning of public spaces for social integration. Through observations and interviews in two Dutch cities (Nijmegen and Utrecht) insight is gained into the use and perception of public spaces. Positive experiences in public spaces contribute to feeling at home in a multi-ethnic neighbourhood. Not only intense and lasting contacts, but also fleeting interactions contribute to feeling at home. Experience with diversity contributes to a realistic view of multiculturalism, a view that is based on everyday experiences, with all its positive and negative implications. This, however, does not mean that residents do not use stereotypes or categorizations. However, there is a major difference between the public discourse - which focuses on differences and problems - and everyday encounters, which are perceived as a way to experience and enjoy diversity. Recommendations are that politicians should look at the everyday realities in multi-ethnic neighbourhoods when discussing issues related to multi-ethnic societies. Repeatedly stressing the dichotomy between native and non-native Dutch citizens and focusing on problems, has a negative effect on the everyday lives of people because it produces and reproduces stereotyped images. Integration is not only about non-native Dutch residents adapting themselves to Dutch society: it is also about the extent to which people from various backgrounds live together and feel at home in their neighbourhood.

Goed bedoelde onderwijsveranderingen zijn vaak minder effectief dan verwacht. De samenleving heeft een stevige invloed op het functioneren van het onderwijs. Maar dit betekent niet dat het onderwijs een machteloos instituut is, want de inrichting van het onderwijs beïnvloedt ook die maatschappelijke ontwikkelingen. Zo verschillen de onderwijstrajecten van vergelijkbare tweede generatie Turkse en Marokkaanse leerlingen tussen vijf Europese steden, beïnvloedt de betrouwbaarheid van de selectie het functioneren van de arbeidsmarkt en verschilt de invloed van etnische diversiteit van scholen op verdraagzaamheid tussen verschillende landen. Van der Graaf researches the emotional ties of residents to their deprived neighbourhood. In transforming deprived areas into great places to live much attention has been given to the physical, social and economical aspects of deprivation. However, little is known about the relationship between deprivation and emotional ties: What makes residents in deprived areas feel at home in their neighbourhood? In this PhD thesis Peter van der Graaf focused on the emotional ties of residents to their neighbourhood and researched how these ties are affected by urban renewal. He also compares practices between the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, where the emotions of residents are considered more in urban renewal.

De zorg om het 'verlies van gemeenschap' is een van de oudste kernproblemen van de sociologie. Deze zorg neemt toe met de voortschrijdende rationalisering en individualisering. De moderne welvaartsstaat kent een uitgebreid zorgstelsel met ongekend grote kansen op de productie van collectieve goederen. Toch heeft de welvaartsstaat vervreemding in plaats van sociale cohesie voortgebracht en tot een veelvoud van collectieve kwaden geleid in plaats van gemeenschappen, burgerzin en participatie. In Burgers in de buurt wordt deze problematiek in verschillende sociale settings (buurt, school en vereniging) door een aantal experts bestudeerd.
