Between 2007 and 2014, a Greek-American team investigated an impressive array of Early Roman to Early Byzantine buildings and burials on the Koutsongila Ridge at Kenchreai, the eastern port of ancient Corinth. This volume presents the project's final results, revealing abundant evidence not only for the history of activity in a transitional urban/suburban landscape, but also for the society, economy, and religion of local residents. Important structural and mortuary discoveries abound, including a district of lavish houses with exquisite mosaic pavement and an Early Christian Octagon. The large artifactual assemblage encompasses a variety of objects from pottery and lamps to glass, coins, and jewelry. Bones and teeth from over 200 individuals illustrate differences in health over time, while thousands of bones and shells from a variety of animals attest to diet and subsistence. This study paints a picture of a Corinthian community, small but prosperous and well connected, actively participating in an urban elite culture expressed through decorative art and monumental architecture.

L’area dell’insediamento romano di Chiunsano, nel territorio comunale di Gaiba (Rovigo), già indagata da Alfonso Alfonsi con alcune trincee nel 1904, è stata oggetto di nove campagne di scavo, condotte sistematicamente dal 1992 al 2000 dall’Università di Bochum, sotto la direzione del prof. Hermann Büsing. Il volume presenta l’esito delle ricerche sul campo, che hanno consentito di ricostruire la planimetria e le principali vicende edilizie del complesso, testimonianza della plurisecolare presenza della romanità nel territorio polesano, unitamente ai risultati dell’attività di catalogazione e di studio dei reperti, che ha coinvolto nell’opera numerosi specialisti. Alcuni rinvenimenti, tra i quali il corredo funerario della cosiddetta “Dama di Chiunsano”, straordinario per la ricchezza e la provenienza eterogenea degli oggetti d’ornamento, databili tra la seconda metà del V e gli inizi del VI secolo d.C., testimoniano una frequentazione del sito anche in epoca tardoantica.

Il XVI Quaderno di Archeologia della Soprintendenza per i Beni archeologici dell'Emilia Romagna riguarda la pubblicazione, in tempi davvero molto rapidi, di una piccola ma importante necropoli romana, quella rinvenuta in territorio ferrarese, a Gambulaga, appartenente alla ricca famiglia dei Fadieni, vissuti nell'area deltizia nella prima età imperiale. Al di là del merito scientifico e dell'importanza della pubblicazione sistematica ed accurata sia del contesto di scavo sia delle stele funerarie con il loro patrimonio figurativo e il notevolissimo testo epigrafico, sia, infine, dei corredi funerari di riferimento, preme rilevare la novità delle scoperte archeologiche di Gambulaga. È infatti una delle rare occasioni in cui possiamo apprezzare le manifestazioni funerarie di una delle famiglie che presumibilmente abitavano le grandi ville del territorio padano, quali conosciamo ad esempio dagli scavi di Russi, o i ricchi borghi rurali che si collocavano lungo le strade consolari della Cisalpina. Si tratta dei rappresentanti di una classe dirigente medio-alta che costituì l'ossatura del sistema economico di questa regione, ne fece tra la tarda età repubblicana e il II secolo d.C. una delle più ricche dell'Impero; tra di loro erano certo scelti gli alti gradi della burocrazia e dell'esercito romano. Dei Fadieni possiamo ora apprezzare, grazie allo scavo e allo studio di Fede Berti e dei suoi collaboratori, uno squarcio non solo dei riti e delle cerimonie funerarie, ma anche delle vicende economiche e dello stile di vita.
