Battles and Borders. Perspectives on Cultural Transmission and Literature in Minor Language Areas is about literature on the fringes of Europe. The authors all discuss the often unique ways in which literary history and cultural transfer function in peripheral and central regions against the background of shifting national borders in the last two centuries. Special attention is paid to minority and migrant groups in Northwest Europe. The present volume aims to prompt a reconsideration of the concepts of ‘minority' and ‘migrant' cultures and literatures in the past and the present day. It also suggests a new topic for further study: the importance of cultural transfer for migrant groups (whether or not they form a diaspora) and their ability to create new words and to develop new identities. This seventh volume in the Studies on Cultural Transfer and Transmission (CTaT) series is a spinoff of the research project ‘Peripheral Autonomy? Longitudinal analysis of cultural transfer in the literary fi elds of small language communities'. This project was carried out by scholars at the University of Groningen, Ghent University and Uppsala University. It started in 2006 and concluded with the publication in 2012 of Rethinking Cultural Transfer and Transmission. Reflections and New Perspectives.

Icons Of Danish Modernity written by Julie K. Allen and has been published by University of Washington Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-07-15 with History categories.

Julie Allen utilizes the lives and friendship of the Danish literary critic George Brandes (1842-1927) and the silent film star Asta Nielsen (1881-1972) to explore questions of culture and national identity in early twentieth-century Denmark. Danish culture and politics were influenced in this period by the country's deeply ambivalent relationship with Germany. Brandes and Nielsen, both of whom lived and worked in Germany for significant periods of time, were seen as dangerously cosmopolitan by the Danish public, even while they served as international cultural ambassadors for the very society that rejected them during their lifetimes. Allen argues that they were the prototypical representatives of a socially liberal and culturally modern "Danishness" (Danskhed) that Denmark itself only gradually (and later) grew into. This lively study brings its central characters to life while offering an original, thought provoking analysis of the origins and permutations of Danish modernism and Danish national identity--issues that continue to be significant in today's multi-ethnic Denmark. Icons of Danish Modernity is a book about the uneasy waves that arise when celebrities take on national symbolism, and the beginnings of this formula in the early twentieth century.

Travelling Ideas In The Long Nineteenth Century written by Petra Broomans and has been published by Barkhuis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-11-19 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Travelling Ideas in the Long Nineteenth Century is about how ideas travel on the waves of cultural transfer. The volume focuses in particular on the exchange of ideas, knowledge and culture between the Nordic countries and continental Europe. It includes reflections on travelling and transmitting ideas through various forms, and takes a step further in scrutinising how new theories in literary, cultural and historical studies, as well as new methods, are influencing research in the field of cultural transfer and transmission. In the first part of the volume, the authors examine the export and import of ideas through literature in translation, travel letters, international education strategies and the establishment of artists' colonies. Attention is paid to how writers, artists and cultural transmitters used their cross-border mobility in transferring ideas and how they were connected to each other in new contact zones. The second part is dedicated to new research approaches, such as the use of digital instruments, and research on the strategies and politics behind translated literature. Here, translation bibliographies and the bibliographical data of national libraries, which today are often accessible in digital form, come under scrutiny. These sources are valuable objects of study in the mining of translation flows.

Literary History: Towards a Global Perspective is a research project funded by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet). Initiated in 1996 and launched in 1999, it aims at finding suitable methods and approaches for studying and analysing literature globally, emphasizing the comparative and intercultural aspect. Even though we nowadays have fast and easy access to any kind of information on literature and literary history, we encounter, more than ever, the difficulty of finding a credible overall perspective on world literary history. Until today, literary cultures and traditions have usually been studied separately, each field using its own principles and methods. Even the conceptual basis itself varies from section to section and the genre concepts employed are not mutually compatible. As a consequence, it is very difficult, if not impossible, for the interested layperson as well as for the professional student, to gain a clear and fair perspective both on the literary traditions of other peoples and on one's own traditions. The project can be considered as a contribution to gradually removing this problem and helping to gain a better understanding of literature and literary history by means of a concerted empirical research and deeper conceptual reflection. The contributions to the four volumes are written in English by specialists from a large number of disciplines, primarily from the fields of comparative literature, Oriental studies and African studies in Sweden. All of the literary texts discussed in the articles are in the original language. Each one of the four volumes is devoted to a special research topic.

Cultural transmitters, or mediators, play an important role in the transmission and reception of literature. What is a cultural transmitter? What role do women play in the field of cultural transfer and transmission and how active were women in developing the profession of cultural transmitter? In this volume, the first in the series Studies on Cultural Transfer and Transmission (CTaT), a select group of scholars from various disciplines from Belgium, the Netherlands and Scandinavia discuss the concept of 'cultural transmitter' from a gender perspective. The importance of the ideologies women cultural transmitters themselves entertained concerning the reception of literature is also investigated. The essays demonstrate that religious, political and economic structures played guiding roles in the lives of many women cultural transmitters. Therefore, they dealt with feminism and sociopolitical issues, sexual politics, the practice of translation (to earn money), the role of women in society and how women were raised, the position of women writers and critics and religion. Examples of other fields in which women cultural transmitters were involved include science and philosophy. Furthermore, the discusssion of the concept of 'cultural transmitter' from a gender perspective reveals that religion, nation, womanhood and entrepreneurship are important aspects to be incorporated into any definition of a cultural transmitter. While the focus is on Scandinavia and the Dutch-speaking region in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the positions and activities of the cultural transmitters discussed can be 'translated' into other language areas and 'transferred' to other periods.
