"Although sexual assault has received increasing attention since #MeToo became widely known, little attention has focused on the experiences of queer men who have experienced this violence. Violent Differences is the first book of its kind to focus specifically on queer male survivors and to devote particular attention to Black queer men. While previous scholarship on male survivors has emphasized the role of masculinity, Doug Meyer shows that race and sexuality should be considered as equally foundational as gender. Instead of considering sexual assault against queer men in the abstract, this book draws attention to survivors' lived experiences. Meyer examines interview data with 60 queer men who have experienced sexual assault, highlighting their interactions with the police and their experiences of victim blaming. This book expands approaches to sexual assault through an analysis of a new group of survivors and by revealing that race, gender, and sexuality all remain essential for understanding how this violence is experienced"--

Understanding Violence written by Elizabeth Kande Englander and has been published by Psychology Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-01-30 with Psychology categories.

What impels human beings to harm others--family members or strangers? And how can these impulses and actions be prevented or controlled? Heightened public awareness of and concern about what is widely perceived as a recent explosion of violence, on a spectrum from domestic abuse to street crime to terrorism has motivated behavioral and social scientists to cast new light on old questions. Many hypotheses have been offered. In this book Elizabeth Kandel Englander sorts, structures, and evaluates them. She draws on contemporary research and theory in varied fields--clinical and social psychology, sociology, criminology, psychiatry, social work, neuropsychology, behavioral genetics, and education--to present a uniquely balanced, integrated, and readable summary of what we currently know about the causes and effects of violence. Throughout, she emphasizes the necessity of distinguishing among different types of violent behavior and of realizing that nature and nurture interact in human development. There are no simple answers and many well-accepted "facts" must be challenged. This thoroughly revised and expanded second edition of Understanding Violence will be welcomed by all those concerned with violent offenders and their victims, and by their students and trainees. New chapters discuss: *biological and psychological factors in violence; *developmental and social learning factors in violence; and *youth violence, including gang conflicts and school shootings. New coverage includes recent research on: *children's use of violent video games and their relationship to violent or aggressive behavior--alcohol use and violence, and the role of alcohol and drugs in violent crime; *the types and causes of sexual assault; *spousal homicide, child abuse, and physical punishment; and *social and cultural factors in violence. Updated statistics on frequencies and types of violent crimes are also incorporated.

Male Violence written by John Archer and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-11-30 with Psychology categories.

First published in 1994, Male Violence examines male violence as the major source of human suffering from a wide range of perspectives. This book contains accessible contributions from a wide range of psychologists who have studied the many faces of male violence: in childhood and adulthood; on the street and in the home; towards men, women and children; and in its sexual and non-sexual forms. These varied topics, together with an emphasis on naturalistic rather than laboratory-based investigations, distinguish these researchers from those aiming to make generalizations about human aggression without considering the issues of sex and gender. In doing so, Male Violence raises fundamental questions about values which are accepted and unchallenged by the majority of people living in the modern world. This book will be of interest to students of psychology, sociology, and gender studies.

Most schools are safe places for children but that does not mean that members of a school community live and learn together in harmony at all time. Violence towards children can take place in a variety of forms, including physical and verbal abuse and bullying. This is a practical handbook for schools to use when training staff in techniques for reducing violence. In particular, it addresses two issues: how to establish and maintain a learning environment where violence is not tolerated and how to respond to violence when it occurs so that this environment is protected. Each chapter covers a critical area for school policy, describes the issues, and proposes activities designed to be combined into a training programme to meet the specific needs of a group of staff. This includes teachers and the growing number of support staff in European schools. School leaders, administrators and educationalists should find this guide a useful addition to the resources for reducing violence in schools available in their own country.

Does violence on a movie, TV, or computer screen or in a song lyric beget violence in the streets? What about aggression and violence in televised sporting events? What are the known effects of violence in the media on the developing mind of a young child? Do rating systems and warning labels help in the effort to keep overtly violent materials out of the hands of children—or do they act as magnets? Where does violence in the media cross a line from legitimate entertainment and plot development to gratuitousness and even pornography? How do we define media violence, and just how much is there? What methodologies do behavioral scientists use to assess content and draw conclusions about effects, and how do we separate valid inferences from entrenched myths and assumptions? How should findings from research studies be translated into public policy? Students are able to explore these questions and more in the Encyclopedia of Media Violence. Entries examine theory, research, and debates as they relate to media violence in a manner that is accessible and jargon-free to help readers better understand questions from varied perspectives.
