Traditionally, scientific fields have defined boundaries, and scientists work on research problems within those boundaries. However, from time to time those boundaries get shifted or blurred to evolve new fields. For instance, the original goal of computer vision was to understand a single image of a scene, by identifying objects, their structure, and spatial arrangements. This has been referred to as image understanding. Recently, computer vision has gradually been making the transition away from understanding single images to analyzing image sequences, or video understanding. Video understanding deals with understanding of video sequences, e. g. , recognition of gestures, activities, facial expressions, etc. The main shift in the classic paradigm has been from the recognition of static objects in the scene to motion-based recognition of actions and events. Video understanding has overlapping research problems with other fields, therefore blurring the fixed boundaries. Computer graphics, image processing, and video databases have obvious overlap with computer vision. The main goal of computer graphics is to gener ate and animate realistic looking images, and videos. Researchers in computer graphics are increasingly employing techniques from computer vision to gen erate the synthetic imagery. A good example of this is image-based rendering and modeling techniques, in which geometry, appearance, and lighting is de rived from real images using computer vision techniques. Here the shift is from synthesis to analysis followed by synthesis.

Audio-visual event detection aims to identify semantically defined events that reveal human activities. Most previous literature focused on restricted highlight events, and depended on highly ad-hoc detectors for these events. This research emphasizes generalizable robust modeling of single-microphone audio cues and/or single-camera visual cues for the detection of real-world events, requiring no expensive annotation other than the known timestamps of the training events. To model the audio cues for event detection, we leverage statistical models proven effective in speech recognition. First, a tandem connectionist-HMM approach combines the sequence modeling capabilities of the hidden Markov model (HMM) with the context-dependent discriminative capabilities of an artificial neural network. Second, an SVM-GMM-supervector approach uses noise-robust kernels to approximate the KL divergence between feature distributions in different audio segments. The proposed methods outperform our top-ranked HMM-based acoustic event detection system in the CLEAR 2007 Evaluation, which detects twelve general meeting room events such as keyboard typing, cough and chair moving. To model the visual cues, we propose the Gaussianized vector representation, constructed by adapting a set of Gaussian mixtures according to the set of patch-based descriptors in an image or video clip, regularized by the global Gaussian mixture model. The innovative visual modeling approach establishes unsupervised correspondence between local descriptors in different images or video clips, and achieves outstanding performance in a video event categorization task on ten LSCOM-defined events in the Trecvid broadcast news data, such as exiting car, running and people marching. Following an efficient branch-and-bound search scheme, we further propose an object localization approach for the Gaussianized vector representation. We jointly model audio and visual cues for improved event detection using multi-stream HMMs and coupled HMMs (CHMM). Spatial pyramid histograms based on the optical flow are proposed as a generalizable visual representation that does not require training on labeled video data. In a multimedia meeting room non-speech event detection task, the proposed methods outperform previously reported systems leveraging ad-hoc visual object detectors and sound localization information obtained from multiple microphones.

This dissertation (i) describes an automatic procedure for estimating the stopping condition of non-regularized iterative deconvolution methods based on an orthogonality criterion of the estimated signal and its gradient at a given iteration; (ii) presents a decomposition method that splits the image into geometric (or cartoon) and texture parts using anisotropic diffusion with orthogonality based parameter estimation and stopping condition, utilizing the theory that the cartoon and the texture components of an image should be independent of each other; (iii) describes a method for moving foreground object extraction in sequences taken by wearable camera, with strong motion, where the camera motion compensated frame differencing is enhanced with a novel kernel-based estimation of the probability density function of the background pixels. The presented methods have been thoroughly tested and compared to other similar algorithms from the state-of-the-art.

Machine learning builds models of the world using training data from the application domain and prior knowledge about the problem. The models are later applied to future data in order to estimate the current state of the world. An implied assumption is that the future is stochastically similar to the past. The approach fails when the system encounters situations that are not anticipated from the past experience. In contrast, successful natural organisms identify new unanticipated stimuli and situations and frequently generate appropriate responses. The observation described above lead to the initiation of the DIRAC EC project in 2006. In 2010 a workshop was held, aimed to bring together researchers and students from different disciplines in order to present and discuss new approaches for identifying and reacting to unexpected events in information-rich environments. This book includes a summary of the achievements of the DIRAC project in chapter 1, and a collection of the papers presented in this workshop in the remaining parts.

Digital video is being used widely in a variety of applications such as entertainment, surveillance and security. Large amount of video in surveillance and security requires systems capable to processing video to automatically detect and recognize events to alleviate the load on humans and enable preventive actions when events are detected. The main objective of this work is the analysis of computer vision techniques and algorithms used to perform automatic detection of events in video sequences. This thesis presents a surveillance system based on optical flow and background subtraction concepts to detect events based on a motion analysis, using an event probability zone definition. Advantages, limitations, capabilities and possible solution alternatives are also discussed. The result is a system capable of detecting events of objects moving in opposing direction to a predefined condition or running in the scene, with precision greater than 50% and recall greater than 80%.

Road traffic is often subject to random disturbances due to weather, incidents, or special events. Effectively detecting and disseminating information about disturbances is a key goal of modern, "smart" infrastructure. Toward this, this dissertation investigates two related questions. First, how can traffic managers better utilize existing traffic cameras to automatically identify traffic disturbances? Second, how can we model different aspects of information-such as human misperception or ignorance of other's information-and their effects on the travelers' route choices? Part I addresses analyzing unstructured, sequential image data, such as traffic CCTV footage, with a novel, semantics-oriented approach based on natural language and semantic features. The approach extracts structured, human-interpretable "topic signals" from distributions of common object labels, which correspond to physical processes depicted in the footage. Changes and anomalies in these topic signals are used to identify notable events in weather conditions and traffic congestion. This is demonstrated on a new, real-world dataset collected from Boston freeway CCTV footage. In notable event detection, the use of topic signal representation outperforms the use of any individual label signal. Part II addresses game theoretic modeling of informational effects on travelers' route choices. It considers both access and accuracy of information about the network state, as well as the perception of other's information. It introduces the Subjective Bayesian Congestion Game (BCG), which models a broader set of player beliefs than those allowed by the conventional common prior assumption (Objective BCG). This enables modeling of uncertainty about other's information, such as when one population is unaware of information services. Analytical solutions are provided for a stylized configuration of the Subjective BCG, and a numerical solver is provided for more general configurations. Compared to the Objective BCG, the Subjective BCG has qualitatively distinct solutions and costs, indicating that the perception of other's information significantly affects equilibrium route choices.
