This work is the first English translation of the entire text of part one of sixteenth-century Spanish historian Francisco López de Gómara’s General History of the Indies. Including substantial critical annotations and providing access to various readings and passages added to or removed from the successive editions of the 1550s, this translation expands the archive of texts available to English speakers reconsidering the various aspects of the European invasion of America. General History of the Indies was the first universal history of the recent discoveries and conquests of the New World made available to the Old World audience. At publication it consisted of two parts: the first a general history of the European discovery, conquest, and settlement of the Americas, and the second a detailed description of Cortés’s conquest of Mexico. Part one—in the multiple Spanish editions and translations into Italian and French published at the time—was the most comprehensive, popular, and accessible account of the natural history and geography of the Americas, the ethnology of the peoples of the New World, and the history of the Spanish conquest, including the most recent developments in Peru. Despite its original and continued importance, however, it had never been translated into English. Gómara’s history communicates Europeans’ general understanding of the New World throughout the middle and later sixteenth century. A lively, comparatively brief description of Europe’s expansion into the Americas with significant importance to today’s understanding of the early modern worldview, Francisco López de Gómara’s General History of the Indies will be of great interest to students of and specialists in Latin American history, Latin American literature, anthropology, and cultural studies, as well as specialists in Spanish American intellectual history and colonial Latin America.

La obra de los cronistas, mezcla entre diarios de guerras de conquista y novelas caballerescas, es una pieza vital en el entendimiento del camino léxico recorrido por la lengua española desde 1592. Cada una de las crónicas es un tesoro de palabras que han pervivido en diferentes zonas hispanoamericanas, en España, y en otras lenguas europeas. Lamentablemente, Bartolomé de las Casas ha sufrido la apatía de los filólogos, justificada por su polémica obra, llena de exacerbaciones, narraciones escalofriantes de abusos a los indios, denuncias irritadas ... A la "Historia de las Indias", su más documentada y extensa obra, y a su léxico indígena dedicamos este estudio. Allí Las Casas se nos muestra como un fiable, atento observador-oyente a la hora de reproducir y acentuar los indigenismos, de acotar significados. Sus 86 indigenismos (con 1.133 ocurrencias) se presentan ordenados alfabéticamente y definidos de acuerdo con la aplicación contextual que les da el dominico, con ejemplos seleccionados según su relevancia y su significación. Aparece comentada su filiación, su transformación de significado, así como su progresión en el español. El corpus indígena recogido es amplio e interesante, demuestra que la "Historia de las Indias" es un testimonio obligado en la documentación del período que corresponde a la primera mitad del siglo XVI del español americano, sobre todo al encuentro con las primeras lenguas indígenas (taíno y lenguas circuncaribes) y la aclimatación de la lengua española y sus portadores a la realidad americana.

A lot of what we know about “exotic languages” is owed to the linguistic activities of missionaries. They had the languages put into writing, described their grammar and lexicon, and worked towards a standardization, which often came with Eurocentric manipulation. Colonial missionary work as intellectual (religious) conquest formed part of the Europeans' political colonial rule, although it sometimes went against the specific objectives of the official administration. In most cases, it did not help to stop (or even reinforced) the displacement and discrimination of those languages, despite oftentimes providing their very first (sometimes remarkable, sometimes incorrect) descriptions. This volume presents exemplary studies on Catholic and Protestant missionary linguistics, in the framework of the respective colonial situation and policies under Spanish, German, or British rule. The contributions cover colonial contexts in Latin America, Africa, and Asia across the centuries. They demonstrate how missionaries dealing with linguistic analyses and descriptions cooperated with colonial institutions and how their linguistic knowledge contributed to European domination.
