During the Renaissance period, when the Greek texts of the Bible became accessible again to Western scholars, a large number of words were identified that seemed to be attested only in the Septuagint and New Testament: the famous voces biblicae, "biblical words". They were held by some to reflect a special kind of Jewish Greek, or perhaps even a peculiar Greek idiom created by the Holy Spirit in order to express the unspeakable mysteries of God's grace. Today, scholars usually prefer more down-to-earth explanations. Moreover, the list of voces biblicae has been much shortened because many words that were initially found only in the Bible later turned up in the papyri. Nevertheless, the "biblical words" continue to fascinate. The present volume contains seven essays illuminating different aspects of the vocabulary of the Greek Bible.

The modern rediscovery of the Greek and Latin papyri from Egypt has transformed our knowledge of the ancient world. We cannot, however, make the same claim in the specific area of language study. Although important studies of the language of the papyri have appeared sporadically over the past century, we are still dealing today with a linguistic resource of extraordinary richness which has hardly begun to be explored. Every scrap of papyrus and every ostracon (potsherd) or tablet unearthed has the potential to change some aspect of the way we think about the Greek and Latin languages. This book demonstrate that potential, by gathering together essays from seventeen scholars who present a variety of perspectives and methodological approaches. The Language of the Papyri charts current directions of international research, and will also provide a stimulus for future work.

Aramaic In Its Historical And Linguistic Setting written by Holger Gzella and has been published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Aramaic language categories.

This volume contains contributions by W. Arnold, S.E. Fassberg, M.L. Folmer, W.R. Garr, A. Gianto, H. Gzella, J.F. Healey, O. Jastrow, J. Joosten, O. Kapeliuk, S.A. Kaufman, G. Khan, R. Kuty, A. Lemaire, E. Lipinski, H.L. Murre-van den Berg, C. Morrison, N. Pat-El, W.Th. van Peursen, and A. Tal. They discuss central issues of Aramaic linguistics in the light of the most recent research: editions of primary source material; extensive historical and linguistic overviews on matters of classification and language change; detailed studies of grammatical and lexical topics analyzing data from different Aramaic languages, for instance determination and tense-aspect-modality systems. Several papers closely interact with each other. As a whole, they bridge the gap between ancient and modern forms of Aramaic by providing a more comprehensive approach to this language group and its attested history of three millennia. Thanks to a sharp thematic focus, wide-ranging discussions of a great amount of material, and up-to-date theoretical frameworks, these proceedings can also act as a modern handbook of Aramaic in all its complexity. All articles are thematically arranged, fully indexed and cross-referenced.

Collected Studies On The Septuagint written by Jan Joosten and has been published by Mohr Siebeck this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Bible categories.

In this volume Jan Joosten brings together seventeen articles, published in journals and collective volumes between 1996 and 2008, with one unpublished essay. In these essays he deals mainly with questions of language and interpretation in the earliest Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible. Many of Jan Joosten's studies take their point of departure in one or the other striking features in the language of the Septuagint, propose a theory explaining its peculiarity, and go on from there to relate the linguistic phenomenon to wider historical, exegetical or theological issues. Others deal with problems of method in establishing the historical background of the version, its relation to the Hebrew source text, and its theology. Taken as a whole, Jan Joosten offers an original contribution to a number of contemporary debates on the Old Greek version. Notably in this book he addresses from various perspectives the questions of who the translators were and what they tried to do.

Thackeray's treatment of the Septuagint's grammar is a masterful reference work, which moved Septuagintal study forward. "Why write a Grammar of a translation, in parts a servile translation, into a Greek which is far removed from the Attic standard, of an original which was often imperfectly understood? A sufficient answer might be that the work forms part of a larger whole, the Grammar of Hellenistic Greek, the claims of which, as bridging the gulf between the ancient and the modern tongue upon the attention of philhellenes and philologists have in recent years begun to receive their due recognition from a growing company of scholars. The Septuagint, in view both of the period which it covers and the variety of its styles, ranging from the non-literary vernacular to the artificial Atticistic, affords the most promising ground for the investigation of the peculiarities of the Hellenistic or 'common' language . . . Though of less paramount importance than the New Testament, the fact that it was the only form in which the older Scriptures were known to many generations of Jews and Christians and the deep influence which it exercised upon New Testament and Patristic writers justify a separate treatment of its language. Again, the fact that it is in the main translation gives it a special character and raises the difficult question of the extent of Semitic influence upon the written and spoken Greek of a bilingual people." -from the Preface Contents I. Introduction II. Orthography and Phonetics III. Accidence
