Die zentrale Frage die geklärt werden soll lautet: „Was ist das Besondere am Menschenbild der Humanistischen Psychologie, als Teildisziplin der Psychologie?“ Diese Fragestellung impliziert drei Dimensionen, die untersucht werden sollen. Zum einen soll geklärt werden, in welchem Verhältnis die Humanistische Psychologie im Speziellen und Wissenschaft im Allgemeinen und eine bestimmte anthropologische Vorstellung, welche sich im Menschenbild manifestiert, stehen. Zweitens sollen die Elemente des Menschenbildes der Humanistischen Psychologie herausgearbeitet werden und drittens soll das „Besondere“ des Menschenbildes der Humanistischen Psychologie verdeutlicht werden, indem es in Kontext zu anthropologischen Vorstellungen psychologischer Nachbardisziplinen, nämlich der Psychoanalyse und des Behaviorismus gesetzt wird. Zwar werden in dieser Arbeit auch inhaltliche Methoden und Therapieformen der Humanistischen Psychologie angesprochen, jedoch hat diese Arbeit nicht den Anspruch diese vollständig zu analysieren. Die vorwiegend verwendete Methode die in dieser Arbeit verwendet wird, ist die hermeneutische Betrachtung. So soll das Menschenbild der Humanistischen Psychologie im Entstehungskontext seiner Zeit analysiert werden. Aus diesem Grunde ergibt sich auch, wie bereits angesprochen, die Notwendigkeit, die Humanistische Psychologie und deren Menschenbild nicht isoliert, sondern im Verhältnis zu den anthropologischen Vorstellungen der Psychoanalyse und des Behaviorismus zu betrachten.

Die humanistische Psychologie, maßgeblich geprägt durch Charlotte Bühler, Abraham Maslow, Carl R. Rogers und vielen anderen, versteht sich als dritte Kraft neben der Tiefenpsychologie und dem Behaviorismus. Sie entstand als eine Bewegung, die sich von Europa aus nach den USA und nach Europa zurück erstreckte. Ihre Blütezeit erlebte die humanistische Psychologie in den 50er und 60er Jahren in den USA. Alfred Adler war Mitglied der "Psychoanalytischen Vereinigung" in Österreich, distanzierte sich jedoch nach und nach von ihrem Vorsitzenden Siegmund Freud und gründete 1911 die "Gesellschaft für freie Psychoanalyse" (später für Individualpsychologie). Aufgrund der politischen Verhältnisse in seinem Heimatland emigrierte er 1935 in die USA. An einem Institut in New York traf er unter anderen auf Carl R. Rogers, der sich wie folgt über die Zusammenarbeit äußerte: "Ich hatte das Privileg Dr. Alfred Adler zu begegnen, zuzuhören, und zu beobachten .... Da ich damals an die eher starre Freudianische Vorgehensweise des Instituts gewöhnt war ... war ich schockiert über Adlers sehr direkte und trügerisch einfache Art, sofort auf das Kind und die Eltern Bezug zu nehmen. Ich brauchte einige Zeit, bis ich erkannte, wie viel ich von ihm gelernt hatte" (Hoffman, 1997, S. 251). Carl R. Rogers wird heute zu den zentralen Gestalten der Humanistischen Psychologie gezählt (Zimbardo & Gerrig, 1999, S. 538).
